Lee “Carpe” Jae-hyeok and Bae “diem” Min-seong are two ex-Overwatch Pro players. They met online when they were both in middle school playing Counter Strike, lost touch and later reconnected in 2016 when they both began to play Overwatch. They had a shared dream of becoming pro esports players and decided then that they would choose matching gamertags - Carpe and diem (’diem’ in lowercase to denote that it’s a continuation of a single phrase).

They were eventually both scouted by contenders teams before graduating to join the Overwatch League, Carpe to the Philedelphia Fusion and diem to the Shanghai Dragons.

They would later go head-to-head in the 2020 iteration of Overwatch All-stars Sniper 1v1 match, competing for the title of best Widowmaker in the world, ending in 5-4 for diem but the only score that matters is the running tally i’ve been keeping since 2018: 1) childhood friends 2) friends to enemies 3) two halves of one whole = 1000-0 for me and my esports guys and that’s without even getting into how diem and the SHD went from a 100% loss rate to league champions but ask me about that another time.

the idea of a Gayest Player In The NHL bracket at all is already in poor taste to some degree bc i get everyone loves to make the “they’re so gay for each other fr” jokes but the condition of the actual league and its actions right now is like. you do understand why calling these people Gay Icons (Positive) for funny haha jokes is just. at best inappropriate timing, yes? but the idea of literally including one of the guys who got pride nights cancelled with his homophobia is just. can we take a minute to realize that hockey fandom doesn’t take place in a void completely unconnected to reality and see that this is just. a Really Bad Look. at best.
