Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Rivers of London - Ben Aaronovitch Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Characters: Peter Grant (Rivers of London), Sahra Guleed, Jennifer Vaughan, Miriam Stephanopoulos, Thomas Nightingale, Kimberley Reynolds Additional Tags: Case Fic, architecture, gothic architecture, Gargoyles Summary:
Peter is called to a break-in at just about the last place he expects, and soon discovers that the intruder's identity is even less expected.

This is the story I wrote for Yuletide this year. I was SO sure that I was going to get Ted Lasso that when I got my assignment and saw I’d been matched on Rivers of London I didn’t have any idea what to write at first. But when I looked at my recipient keerawa’s prompts, the idea of a case fic touching on real events jumped out at me - if I could think of the right real event. Luckily, @firesign23 suggested Big Ben’s renovations, and something clicked in my brain and said: gargoyles!
And almost 11,000 words later, here we are. 😂

This is my story for the JB Fic Exchange, which I wrote for the lovely @writergirl2011
It’s been eight months since I last wrote anything, so it was really nice to sit down and let the words flow again.
A big thanks to @firesign23 and her team for all their hard work running the exchange this year! (And also thanks to @firesign23 for reading this baby through when she had so much else going on yesterday.)

What a truly progressive government looks like
Tumblr media
The man in this photo is Gough (pronounced Goff) Whitlam, the 21st prime minister of Australia. Fifty years ago, on 2 December 1972, Gough Whitlam’s Australian Labor Party won the federal election, and ushered in easily the most progressive government Australia has ever had. It was a government that truly changed Australia, and set it on the path towards being the country it is today.
Gough (he was one of those rare politicians who was widely known simply by his first name. There was truly only one Gough) was tall and imposing, with silver hair and dark eyebrows, and a booming voice that delivered his razor sharp wit. When he led the ALP to victory in 1972, the party had been out of government for 23 long years, and were determined to make a difference when at last they were back in power. As you’ve probably worked out from the glorious 1970s t-shirts in the picture, the election campaign slogan was It’s Time. It featured in a famous election ad jingle, performed by Alison McCallum and accompanied by many famous faces of the time.
After winning the 1972 election, Gough wasted no time in implementing his election promises. Not willing to wait until the final results of the election were confirmed and the full ministry could be appointed, he and his deputy, Lance Barnard, were sworn in as prime minister and deputy prime minister on 5 December. Between the two of them, they held all 27 government portfolios for two weeks until the rest of the ministry was sworn in. The duumvirate, as it was known:
ordered negotiations to establish full relations with China
ended conscription in the Vietnam War
freed the conscientious objectors who had been jailed for refusing conscription
ordered home all remaining Australian troops in Vietnam
re-opened the equal pay case (for women, who were at that time by law paid less than men for doing the same job) and appointed a woman, Elizabeth Evatt, to the Commonwealth Conciliation and Arbitration Commission, the body that made the decision
abolished sales tax on the contraceptive pill
announced major grants for the arts
appointed an interim schools commission
barred racially discriminatory sport teams from Australia, and instructed the Australian delegation at the United Nations to vote in favour of sanctions on apartheid South Africa and Rhodesia
And that was just the first two weeks.
In the three years that followed, the Whitlam government:
introduced a national universal health scheme
abolished university fees
abolished the death penalty for federal crimes
established Legal Aid
replaced God Save the Queen with Advance Australia Fair as the national anthem
replaced the British honours system with the Order of Australia
created the family court and introduced no fault divorce, the first country in the world to do so
ended the White Australia policy
introduced the racial discrimination act
advocated for Indigenous rights, including creating the Aboriginal Land Fund and the Aboriginal Loans Commission, and returned some of their traditional lands to the Gurunji people in the Northern Territory. This was the first time that any Australian government had returned land to its original custodians. Here’s a famous photograph by Mervyn Bishop of Gough pouring a handful of red earth into the hands of Gurunji leader Vincent Lingiari, ‘as a sign that this land will be in the possession of you and your children forever‘:

My #1 post of 2022
You...watched it??? The Netflix-so-called-Persuasion???? I mean. I don't think I have an actual question. Was it just that human urge to stare at a car crash/doom scroll?
@firesign23 and I watched it together. It was good to have someone to scream at as we somehow made our way through it.
I have to say: NOTHING could have prepared me for how bad it is. It is WAY worse than the trailer. And it's not just a dreadful, dreadful DREADFUL adaptation that understands NOTHING about the novel it's allegedly based on. It's not just that it neither knows nor cares about the social rules, styles and fashions of the Regency period.
It's quite simply one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life. Just so, SO bad. The makers of it clearly have utter contempt for their audience. The way it veers wildly between slapstick comedy and angst, the complete lack of chemistry between (allegedly) Anne and the block of wood playing Wentworth, the random decisions that the characters make which make NO SENSE WHATSOEVER. (Eg. After a conversation with Wentworth on a beach, Anne walks into the water, fully-clothed, and then swims around for a bit. Presumably she then walks back to where she's staying in a soaking wet dress. And yeah, that's a spoiler, but honestly it should serve as a warning, if anyone needs one.)
Henry Golding, who plays Mr Elliot, is the one member of the cast who seems to have realised just what sort of movie he's in, and his performance is COMPLETELY over the top. Perhaps the scene where he explains his Sekrit Plan to Anne with no prompting (because clearly the audience would not have picked up on it without it being spelled out to them) gave him a clue. The bit right near the end where he's kissing Mrs Clay in the street was so extreme that @firesign23 and I both completely lost it. I guess it's better to laugh derisively than to scream in horror?
So, I bet you're sorry you (didn't) ask that question, hey? 😂

an idiots guide to gotham.
sim, i hear you say, what the hell are you doing? it’s gotham. everyone knows gotham. batman’s hometown. arkham asylum. what more is there to know?
surprisingly, a lot.
for example, did you know that the it has been described as "Manhattan below Fourteenth Street at eleven minutes past midnight on the coldest night in November." which i think is one of the coolest descriptions of an aesthetic ever. thanks dennis. anyway, there’s a lot more to this city and it’s mad confusing history than first meets the eye, so in true sim fashion, i’m here to whoop dc into shape and attempt to make sense of it all. in the immortal words of coldplay “oh take me back to the start.”
as a geography nerd, i’d like to begin way way back. like continent forming era. star wars’ a long long time ago has got nothing on this. because really, why is gotham so plagued with crime and corruption? why is it perpetually cloudy and gloomy and dark? why is this tiny patch of american coastline continually the stage for insane events while everywhere else around it seems perfectly fine and chilling.
it’s because of cthulu.
well, kind of. seriously. apparently trapped beneath the actual earth of gotham is a lovecraftian-esque being who’s been chilling for 40,000 years. yeah, bet you didn’t know that. it even takes to calling itself “doctor gotham” after long enough, but that might just be a writer taking the piss out of dr manhattan, which honestly, im here for. so there’s some ancient slumbering god just poisoning what will become gotham, with it’s “evil essence” or whatever. there is a native american tribe who lives in the area - the miagani. in a croatoan-like fashion, they mysteriously disappear one day: no one knows exactly what happened to them, but there’s speculation of black magic and an insane shaman who goes all caesar on them and tries to develop a tyrannical rule, but they seal him in a cave and flee only to be slaughtered by a neighbouring tribe/a mysterious natural disaster. already this place is giving off the Not Good Vibes.
some time later a bunch of colonists arrive, one of whom is named hiriam arkham. he tries to build a chapel, but it ends up being the site of a murder and so that idea is abandoned. the colonists later accidentally open the cave and release Deacon Blackfire (nasty shaman man), who is fairly immortal, definitely a shithead, and also becomes a batman adversary and a black lantern corp member/zombie in a few hundred years. fun. the colonists are never seen again. wonder what happened there.
so the ground keeps being corrupted and drawing the nasties to it. one of these nasties is a norwegian mercenary, captain jon logerquist, who lands there circa 1635 with his crew, feels the heeby jeebies vibe and goes ah yes. this is where i shall settle. utter weirdo. so suddenly we have a city being formed - you guessed it, gotham city, also known simply as gotham. and everything is fairly chill for a while. the city is known to be a hideout for ruffians and smugglers, has a fairly higher proportion of stabbings and burglaries, but other than it being a bit of a lawless wasteland, it’s not, you know, any stranger than other pre-civil war american towns. at some point war for independence ( 1775–1783 ) rolls through, and there’s a fairly large battle that is long and bloody and doesn’t look like is going to be won so the founding fathers decide to do something extra stupid, and summon a bat-demon. yes, literally, a bat-demon. that they think will help them turn the tides of the battle. instead they realise it can’t be controlled, panic a bit, and end up trapping it beneath gotham, nice and snuggled next to fucking cthulu’s cousin. so gotham is now especially Cursed, and also starts gathering a large number of bat colonies in it’s underground cave system, because they’re all coming to worship this demon thing or w/e.
next step is the civil war ( 1861-1865 ), and this is the first time we get a cobblepot in town - colonel nathan cobblepot to be precise. a couple of generations happen, and the town is growing into a city - at this point five of the families truly “found” gotham as a metropolitan and industrial hub, building bridges to connect the islands and forging the path to gotham as it is today. these five families are the cobblepots, the elliots, the crownes, the kanes and the waynes. these eventually become known as gotham’s oldest lineages, and it’s wealthiest, forming the future of gotham high society. however the cobblepots eventually end with penguin, and thomas elliot gets salty and becomes hush ,and the kanes and waynes decide to start dressing up as bats so it’s more like a cautionary tale than anything.
around this time (1870), ra’s al ghul builds wonder city beneath gotham’s old town, and around a naturally occurring lazarus pit under the city. wonder tower becomes a spectacle of the gotham skyline, their equivalent to the empire state or big ben. eventually the project is abandoned, especially after mysterious disappearances, rumours of madness and strange sounds of rioting emerging from the nearly completed project. also occurring in this decade is the conversion of arkham manor into the elizabeth arkham sanatorium (which would later become arkham asylum) under the then heir, amadeus arkham. elizabeth commits suicide, a serial killer murders the rest of the family, save amadeus, who then goes mad and begins dabbling in the occult and experimenting on patients, eventually becoming one himself. despite all this, arkham asylum remains open, setting the scene for this to be one of the most tragic and fucked up buildings in america.
another generation goes by and the wayne family produces solomon wayne, who will eventually become an incredibly important figure to gotham, partly because he is a judge and has a courthouse named after him and all that, but mostly because solomon wayne is the man who hires cyrus pinkney. who? you ask. literally the man responsible for gotham’s fucked up architecture. solomon wayne commissions him to create what he calls “gotham style” around 1890, and pinkney, heavily influenced by both cubist/surrealist design and the gothic revival, is the bastard who ensures everything has a gargoyle slapped on it and that gotham cathedral could literally be home to dracula. every inch of the city is covered in hidden meanings and mysticism, because, if you haven’t already guessed, pinkney was a bit nuts, but solomon wayne seems mighty pleased by this and it does actually boost gotham’s industry and cause people to relocate to it from the surrounding area. pinkney’s final piece de resistance is the statue the lady of gotham (officially named Justice opens her eyes to the world ) in the gotham harbour, yet another new york parallel.
however as a result of booming capitalism and continued gentrification, gotham develops extreme poverty, with several areas of the city, specifically around the docks, the bowery and the narrows, becoming slums. crime levels continue to rise, and many writers take inspiration from chicago and new york mobs in the 30′s and 40′s, drawing parallels and creating organised crime, mafias and gangs. families like the maronis, falcones and thornes begin to take over the city, shaking down businesses for “protection” developing protsitution and drug running rings, importing weapons etc. gotham becomes seen nationally as a dark foreboding metropolis, where the ultra-rich one percenters drink champagne in their ivory towers while the poor of the city suffer and die. city planners also take this opportunity to go absolutely nuts, and build bomb shelters, underground highways, crazy sewer systems, you name it. after all, no one cares right? it’s gotham. by the time the cold war comes to a head, the city is literally riddled with layers of alleys and tunnels and walkways, all over burdened by the watchful eyes of giant bronze statues and stone grotesques.
then, thomas and martha wayne appear, and really start trying to change the city. they develop philantrophic interests, help to create the monorail, encourage the other wealthy elite of the city to care about the rotting corpse of gotham. change is slow, but it happens. the city starts to brighten up, vaguely, and the waynes become heralded as gotham’s saviours, becoming more than a household name. of course, they get shot, in an alleyway, by joe chill, and that same night batman is born. it takes him like 20 years to actually appear in the city, but boy when he does appear, he goes ham. this isn’t a batman meta tho, so i’ll keep it light on his backstory and involvement.
batman tackles corruption in the city, purging the gcpd, bringing criminals to justice etc, all while bruce wayne makes his lauded return and begins trying to change things in the same way that his parents did - investing in the city, creating public services, developing grass roots projects in the worst affected areas of gotham. however, this city is quite literally Cursed and it all goes very wrong very quickly.
first, ra’s al ghul unleashes the clench (also known as Ebola Gulf A virus) into gotham high society, and through the contagion storyline, a LOT of gothamites die. i think it’s like 40% but don’t quote me on that. the whole city is quarantined, but batman manages to save the day! hooray! wrong. the second disaster happens in the cataclysm arc - a 7.6 richter earthquake (although in my professional opinion this should probably be measured using the mercalli scale because you have to take into account the density of population etc in the area, but whatever, dc don’t study earthquakes like i do :/). as a result of these two events happening literally within months of each other, the entire city is declared a “no man’s land” by the US government. most civilians are evacuated, it is cut off from the mainland by destroying bridges and creating a military blockade and left to literally rot. no central government is applicable, no services are available, and very quickly gangs take over, carving up the city between them. imagine the purge but never ending. that’s gotham. huntress and oracle and the remaining scraps of the gcpd try to keep some kind of order, while bruce fucks off to petition the government into not being dicks and fixing the city rather than abandoning it.  eventually, he comes back, batman battles a lot of people, luthor donates enough money to save the city and gotham is rebuilt and repatriated as part of the us.
then the next big events include:
• henri ducard as ra’s al ghul tries to cover the city in fear toxin after teaming up with scarecrow. the narrows is especially targeted.
• steph accidentally starts a gang war after going through batman’s stuff unsupervised. for a while black mask rules gotham.
• hugo strange convinces the gotham city council to let him have old gotham, which he converts into arkham city. eventually wonder tower explodes and the “city” is shut down, cut off from the rest of gotham.
• scarecrow successfully releases his fear toxin over gotham via the cloudburst system. most civilians have already been evacuated, but the city is thrown into ruin and chaos.
these are just the biggest points though, and the ones which help to tie film, comics and games together. my favourite part of gotham i haven’t even talked about yet. but i’m gonna. here we go.
gotham is chronologically removed.
obviously time progresses there, but there is a immense sense of timelessness. gotham does not move on with the rest of the world. there’s a huge mash of different eras and styles. there are airships in the sky and maglev monorails on the ground, people use typewriters alongside touch screen laptops, buildings are either twisted gothic nightmares or glistening modern skyscrapers. the time frame that should be obvious from the setting is completely ambiguous. and it’s brilliant, because really it means that the time is not important. it could be set anywhere, anywhen. gotham looks almost the same in the 40s as it does in 2020, and it means that batman and these events can be slotted into pretty much any decade. batman can be born in 1939 or 1969 or 1999 and it still all works. it’s a mash up of modern expressionism and constructivism and art deco and gothic revival and surrealism and space-age futurism and industrialism and honest to god i could literally talk about this all day. but i mustnt so i shall stop now.
basically the tldr here is that i have a fetish for urban decay, gotham was fucked from day 1 due to some bullshit evil god beneath it, and literally house prices must be so low, because who the hell would want to live there.

Suspiria, part 1 of 2
Tumblr media
Oh mamma mia, I’m so excited for this post! The first of director Dario Argento’s “Three Mothers” trilogy, Suspiria may indeed be the mother of 1970s horror architecture. Released on 02/01/77 in Argento’s home country of Italy, Suspiria turns 41 today, and damn, she looks good for her age. Suspiria was my introduction to giallo, and what a gem of a greeting. Even though I love horror movies, I’m that person who peeks at the screen behind covered eyes. At home, I will run around the couch and do jumping-jacks during tense or violent scenes (I know, I’m super annoying). Despite the movie’s hardcore violence, Suspiria was too beautiful to look away. While rewatching the film, I took about 100 screenshots (I am not even exaggerating, my Cloud storage is kaput), and because this movie is so visually packed, I’m going to separate this into two posts. Andiamo!
Suspiria was the last feature film to be processed in glorious Technicolor. Argento and cinematographer Luciano Tovoli do not squander this legacy, as the film’s sets absolutely luxuriate in lurid, vibrant color. Although the film’s main set, German dance school Academy of Freiburg, was actually shot at De Paoli studio in Rome, the exteriors were mostly filmed around Munich. The Academy’s interiors are a mixed bag of art nouveau details and gorgeous German expressionist-inspired design, and the school’s exterior is based on an actual building, the Haus Zum Walfisch (House of the Whale) in Freiburg im Breisgau.
Tumblr media
That’s the set, seen in a rare daytime shot. Here’s the real-life building:
Tumblr media
Not bad, right? Here’s another shot of the set, the first of its appearance on screen:
Tumblr media
Bravo to the set crew! They really captured that malevolent-ribbon-candy vibe. And thanks to monstermoviehouse.com for the GIF.
Warning: here be spoilers. So after running out of the academy/Whale House, our first victim Pat ends up at her friend’s awesome art deco apartment:
Tumblr media
(If I had a Trapper Keeper right now, I’d be writing “Sorry So Screen Shot Shitty” all over it with the big stoner S.)
But check out those glass doors! I think they are perhaps shower doors? Here’s another view of that etched glass perfection:
Tumblr media
But yes, we are definitely in the bathroom, and I do believe this is the toilet:
Tumblr media
What the hell else can it be? It is literally a throne:
Tumblr media
Anyway, it must be a toilet because the shit is about to go down for Pat. Her friend runs around the floor trying to rouse help, to no avail:
Tumblr media
Sigh. That’s an apartment building worth getting murdered over. Those sconces! And check out the lobby:
Tumblr media
Sweet. I love everything about this foyer, including the stained glass skylight that Argento already pointed out on Pat’s way in:
Tumblr media
I can’t tell if it’s my crappy screen shot or the film, but it looks like they aged the ceiling a bit, no? Anyway, that lovely stained glass will also be showing Pat the way out:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
May I suggest taking the elevator next time? It’s pretty rad:
Tumblr media
Same goes for you, Pat’s friend:
Tumblr media
Good aim, as-yet-unnamed-evil-powers! Now she’ll never get her rental deposit back.
Moving on back to the Academy, I’d like to pause to point out that the school’s headmistress is Joan “Elizabeth Collins Stoddard” Bennett. When Suspiria was in theaters, I was cutting my horror (baby) teeth on re-runs of Dark Shadows.
Tumblr media
My queen, don’t look now but I believe the bastard child of the art deco skylight is right behind you.
The transitional spaces are so well done on this set. For example, there are transom lights, and there are motherfuckin’ transom lights:
Tumblr media
In contrast, there’s a distinctly Edelweiss vibe going on in the dance studio:
Tumblr media
I know, I know, Edelweiss is more Austria than Germany, but you get it - a lot of fir wood and spare lines, clean and light, e.g. Northern European en general...
Tumblr media
...with more than a smidgeon of gothic red. BTW, the guy in the front reminds me of Ashton Kutcher. Which reminds me: tune in next week for Dude, Where’s My Carotid Artery? I promise to say it, not spray it.

The inside was really nice, but a bit too bright, I really wish they hadnt installed the lighting system
And then i paid for pretty much the coolest thing money can buy—walking on the roof of this thing. AND if that wasnt already great, it was €4 cheaper if you took the stairs instead of the elevator! So I was super happy.
Tumblr media
I came out of a tight dark staircase and pretty much immediately saw this and it took my breath away
Tumblr media
Flying buttressess😍

A view of Milan from the roof
Tumblr media
Artsy sun shot
The terrace was so beautiful i actually choked up a little bit looking out at the view from THE ROOF OF A CATHEDRAL. (Im still really psyched about this, one of the best experiences of my trip).
After I had finally seen my fill, I walked through the fancy shopping mall, which, funny enough, is in the shape of a cross *comment about consumerism being the new religion*
Tumblr media
Beautiful architecture though
After that I got some Tiramisu gelato and met up woth Hannah (Ali’s friend we met up with in Bologna who also lives in Mantova) because she had tickets to see The Last Supper today and was an amazing human being and offered to take me.
And it was incredible. Up close you could really see how much its fading away which was kind of sad, but it was incredible to see it
Tumblr media
There was a painting on the opposite wall and it really put into perspective Da Vinci’s genius. The other painting was chaotic and colorful and came of a bit cartoon-y and then there is the Last Supper, with its subtle tones and simple background highlighting the main event.
So it was kind of a perfect day between the Duomo and The Last Supper. To finish things off, we walked past the Duomo again at night, got panzolette which is like a deep fried calzone and delicious and salty before catching a train back to Mantova
Tumblr media
Wow, so majestic

Introduction time!
Welcome to our blog! It’s brand new, so we figured we’d better introduce ourselves.
Hey, im Strove, 21 year old guy from Wales in the UK. Pretty much a full time nerd, been playing games for over 15 years, creating digital work for 10 years, making games for 5 years, playing tabletop games for 2 years, running a games design team for 1 year and dating this mess of a woman for around 4 months.
Interests:
Film, TV and Anime
Music (almost every genre, not a fan of most folk, opera, show tunes or generic top 40 crap)
Politics and other current events
Video games  (both playing and making, im the producer for a small indie team here in the UK, lots of paperwork and programming.)
Warhammer 40k, been collecting Dark Angels for over 2 years (i collect, play with, custom model and hand paint the lot)
Nice drinks, i guess?
Fire, explosions, pyrotechnics
Circus, or specifically the juggling side of it and the surrounding skills. Poi Staff, Diabolo, etc. Used to do this kind of stuff a fair bit but dropped off a lil while back.
~Strove
Hi hi, I’m Doll, 22 and also from Wales (UK). My life has been more or less dominated by music, games, and art for as long as I can remember. What began as baby me watching my dad play PS1 Tomb Raider games has turned into a 244-game Steam library and 3 years studying game design at university. I am currently the lead concept and 3D artist for a game project Strove and I are working on within a small indie studio. I’ve known this guy for those 3 years buuuut unfortunately it took me about 2.5 of those years to realise I had feelings for him. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Oh well, it worked out alright in the end, I think!
Interests:
Art - mostly 2D, I’m very fond of paper and coloured pens & pencils, but of course I also work in 3Ds Max.
Music - metal first and foremost, typically leaning towards folk and power, but I do enjoy most of the spectrum, including death and black metal here and there. Outside of that, I have a soft spot for vocaloid... I used to play a lil bit of bass guitar and make some synth music on my computer here and there. It’s been quite a while since I’ve done either now, but I can still be found singing to myself 99% of the time when I’m alone. I really enjoy learning songs in languages other than English... I know several by heart in German, Latin, Japanese, French, Korean and Finnish, plus a little bit of Danish here and there.
Games, of course - currently, lots of League of Legends, Monster Hunter Stories, Darkest Dungeon and XCOM 2. I’m also quite fond of quick and pretty mobile games.
Good films, TV shows and anime
I acquire books at an alarming rate and I absolutely cannot read fast enough to keep up, but I still gotta have em.
Gothic architecture and fashion
Disneyland imagineering/general theme park stuff
Circuses, pirates and vikings.

All Saints (no, not the clothing brand)
Tumblr media
IM BACK!!! This time with another architecture post, oh yeah...
So today we went to another church, because believe it or not, they are all slightly different. Our visit today was to All Saints on Margaret Street. Now, this specific church is different probably in many ways, but due to my sever lack of understanding of the church and unwillingness to learn, I will only be talking about one feature: high victorian gothic architecture.
Whereas regular gothic architecture ruled the designs of many churches before this time, William Butterfield opted for a more collage-ish style. This church features a deep red and black brick exterior, which I found frankly disturbing and unwelcoming. Which is rather peculiar seeing that the design of this church was based on the idea of making it more beautiful so as to attract more people into its iron gates. The church is located on a seemingly regular block of shops, offices and juice bars, so nowadays it sticks out like a sore thumb.
The interior was equally daunting. High ceilings and stained glass windows were tucked into the small space and almost distracted from the highly religious i angry adorning the walls. Now, all of this is quite common to all churches but I cannot emphasize enough the extreme dark and dank aura of this place. The high victorian gothic style felt forced among the shopping center location, and ominous with the creeky benches and mismatched tile floors.
Overall this church scared me, like usual, but it was worth noting that despite the lack of pointed arches and flying buttresses, it remained gothic just the same.

okay since i said i was gonna ages ago and a few people asked anyway and i need a distraction really fuckin bad right nowww im finally gonna post my notes on making the artwork for the fairytale metaphor - tjlc advent videoooooo ,,
Very Excuse Me for being a dork in advance lksdjksdjfdkls
scroll to the bottom for my Fave Bit its cute promise
heres some waffle first;
the general style of early english stained glass which i love [yells] ye get attached to weird shit when you write your coursework on the evolution of churches in england fnjdksjf ( you can read it here if youre interested in this kind of mess , be warned its 43 pages long and just over 11k words but my own work beyond the context essay is new research) --- anyway its an easily simplified style of framing at its most basic level since it was all very practical up to a point the mash of norman + saxon stylings are pretty simple and sturdy - the british isles were late to the gothic architecture party which is why early english gothic is very distinct --- in terms of stained glass the british isles were VERY late to the party and windows stayed very basic right into the gothic period when the full package of technologies arrived completed in the 12th century and only took a generation to make it from cathedrals into parish churches --- as is pretty much the point of my coursework the two can exist perfectly together anyway !! the vast majority of christian buildings in the uk contain several phases where newfangled extensions and fashions are chucked in to make the best of your little local church and a lot of the earliest cathedrals are full of stained glass now , id say this set mostly follows the impression we get of old sarum cathedral (now salisbury they literally just moved the site from the hill to the town) and if you have a chance to visit PLEASE do :’) the museum opposite is amazing too fyi
I REALLY ENJOYED MAKING THE FONT !!!!!! i couldnt find one i liked enough that was free so i just .. made one lmao GO HARD its an odd mash of studies from the lindisfarne gospels with later medieval documents i photographed for a project and saxon writing / “celtic” fonts, and studies of full manuscripts
the illuminated letters are mostly based on lindisfarne again (xcuse me i love it)  they just ended up coming out far more saxon / northern early christian than the rest of the text but i fully blame that on the context of my archaeology course being run by a catholic geordie who specialised in the dark ages who took us TO holy island lmao
the chainmail tabard combo is all very crusader-ish but its very archetypal of the knights of the era so fuck it, its historically what WOULD have appeared on stained glass anyway [shrug]
i had the hardest gd time figuring out what colour to put sherlock in like so i Create Anew or recreate his clothes ,, purple is wildly historically inaccurate this is my One Thing leave me be i think the purple suits him lmfao
kicks ya door down mAGPIE DRAGON !!!!! which was VERY FUCKING HARD TO FIGURE since its kind of at odds with what your medieval monks bestiaries made dragons look like i wanna know what the fuck they were up to making those things jesus
jus by the by its also very hard to make animals look like andrew scott i can pull that off for ben and martin without too much trouble but HOOO BOY ANDREW ur cute face is difficult lol
thats the tower of london in the background there it was the only (vaguely) relevant landmark that would have been around about that time-frame fjjfjksjf WOW @ SELF why did london have to like .. burn down lol, fuckin wood
the castle behind the moriarty dragon is vaguely styled in a similar fashion to the original tower structure but theres a dragon in the way
while we’re in this realm the background on sir-boast-a-lot is a wing-it affair based on what we kinda knew about medieval town houses with cobble streets and what your average parish church looked like but mostly i love the beam and whitewash structures put me in a bin
anyway
i kinda dressed john up a little more like an archer than full on crusader ?? archer john is life so, using a longbow is also something all boys were legally required to learn for the longest time so its not even out there, i still dont know many people who havent learned how to use a bow and a few people own them too lmfao the countryside is a parody of itself
oKAY THIS IS FUN the navy/yellow stripes and the blue chevron on white are simplified versions of the usual holmes and watson coat of arms’ respectively 8)  these are what 4crests (arms archive) puked out on them both;
Tumblr media
theyre so similar in colour its cute !!!!!!
I LOV THAT !!!!!!
for the sake of not making them clash i made sherlocks blue more navy though its the aesthetique and took out the moons and birbs on johns because Hey Thats Clutter
i spend way too long on this stuff lmfao
if you made it to the end you deserve a hug and a milkshake thanku 💙

Week 2. Formalism and Narratology
Tim Burton is a well- known director who has directed many films such as Edward Scissorhands (1990) . his films are influcenced by German Expressionism, his most appraised works are gothic, dark and quirky horror and fantasy films. These elements that are used in his films are also used in many other German Expressionist films. What inspires me the most when it comes to his work is his dark style and how he expressess himself through his films which is why it’s called expressionism . Burton’s films usually consist of peculiar characters that are outcasts and Gothic designs, arguably this can be the key points that are all being produced by his use of colour. I like how he illustrates key themes through the use of different colour palletes. I have noticed the use of colour contrasting pallet in Edward Scissor hands there are a lot of pastell colours which were used to represent the 1960s suburbia which create a friendly tone to the film to show that the people from the suburbs are friendly and bright, however that the complete oppisite of what they actually are as they didn’t accept Edward in to their homes because of his appearance which makes them anything but friendly. Edward is always shown in black, white and also in grey throughout the film which protrays him as an antagonist/An outcast as he is isolated from everyone else, Burton there for shows us that he is clearly not able to fit in with the pastal colours by seprating the two colour palletes Burton estableses the two different worlds. So German expressionism is the key aspect of burtons film by the use of black and white and the gothic architecture which is shown in so many other film Burton has created. German expressionism is something im really drawn too and I hope too use some of the styles and techiques that I've read about and seen in within the movement.
