William Harvey Carney’s July 13, 1863 action was the earliest by a Black soldier to earn the #MedalofHonor. After the color sergeant was shot, he retrieved the flag and continued forward despite multiple injuries. Later, when his unit fell back, Carney removed the flag from the battlefield. https://mohmuseum.org/medal_of_honor/william-carney/ Posted @withregram • @mohmuseum (at Army Recruiting Columbia, TN) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpDT4GuuAuh/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Today marks the anniversary of the Battle of San Juan Hill where then Lieutenant Colonel and future president Theodore Roosevelt distinguished himself in action near Santiago, Cuba while charging Kettle Hill with the “Rough Riders.” Although casualties among the Rough Riders were heavy, this action, combined with the American naval victory in Santiago Harbor, contributed to the conclusion of the Spanish-American War. Roosevelt’s heroics propelled him to national fame and helped him become president.
On January 16, 2001, Theodore Roosevelt was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor by then-President Bill Clinton. The Medal is on display in the West Wing room of the White House that bears his name. He is the only president to have received the award.

There is a big difference between the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congressional_Gold_Medal, usually referred to as the Congressional Gold Medal, and the Medal of Honor – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medal_of_Honor.

On June 27 and 28, 2005, Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy and three other Navy SEALs were hunting a high-level Taliban leader when they were surrounded by an overwhelming number of Taliban militia in Afghanistan. The four SEALs were pinned down behind cover and were not able to release a communication signal capable of reaching base from their position. Murphy exposed himself to the line of fire so that he could relay their location to headquarters. He was wounded in the process but returned to the battle. Murphy was later killed during the gunfight. For his selfless actions – which led to the rescue of the only Navy SEAL to survive the battle – Murphy earned the #MedalofHonor.

Captain David McCampbell was 34 years old in 1944 when he became Commanding Officer of Air Group Fifteen. Later known as the Fabled Fifteen, this group shot down more enemy planes than any other air group. Flying a Grumman F6F Hellcat, McCampbell shot down his first Japanese plane on June 11, and on June 19, he shot down five enemy planes in the morning—becoming an ace in a day—and two more in the afternoon, with two additional probable kills for a likely total of nine in one day during the famous “Marianas Turkey Shoot.” McCampbell would go on to shoot down a total of 34 enemy planes, with 20 more destroyed on the ground, making him one of the highest-scoring Navy aces whose decorations included the Medal of Honor.

Today we would like the highlight US Army Technician Fourth Grade and Medal of Honor recipient Truman Kimbro. On this day, December 19, in 1944 Kimbro’s heroism earned him the Medal of Honor. As scout, Kimbro led a squad assigned to the mission of mining a vital crossroads near Rocherath, Belgium. At the first attempt to reach their objective, he discovered it was occupied by an enemy tank and at least 20 infantrymen. Driven back by fire, Kimbro made 2 more attempts to lead his squad to the crossroads but all approaches were covered by intense enemy fire. Although warned of the great danger involved, he left his squad in a protected place and, carrying mines, crawled alone toward the crossroads. He was wounded on the way to the objective, but he continued to drag himself forward and laid his mines across the road. As he tried to crawl from the objective the enemy shot him with rifle and machine gun fire. The mines laid by his act of courage delayed the advance of enemy armor and prevented the rear of our withdrawing columns from being attacked. For his heroism, Kimbro was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on May 24, 1945.
