#repost from @anniekylabee . Thanks to all who attended the duke energy rate hike rally and hearing last night in Asheville. Duke has recently been charged with cleaning up their coal ash pits, which have been poisoning drinking water and children throughout the state. They are trying to pay for the cleanup by raising energy rates on Nc residents. The money duke saved cutting corners and dumping coal ash in this way, is a huge factor in their growth into a company that grosses 25 to 30 billion annually. The cleanup projects proposed would cost around 9 billion, total, and yet, they are trying to raise electricity costs, including in the same low-income neighborhoods that are suffering the physical ramifications of living near coal ash pits, to pay for the cleanup. If you own stock in duke energy, shame on you if you don’t speak out against this. Duke and it’s shareholders, and not their victims, need to pay for the consequences of these decisions and actions. And we do so with a sense of sacredness in that reaching.” ~ Paul Tsongas 🔹Appalachian Crow Song🔹 This painting is a collaboration I worked on with @medicineheartmurals (@anniekylabee @dillonendico & myself) in the summer of 2017. We were painting at the @floydfestva festival in the blue ridge mountains of Virginia, the northern end of this magical mountain range that we have so come to love. We painted this painting about these mountains. About the lessons they have to teach us, passed down ancestor to ancestor, teaching each child anew. This painting is about music, the rhythmic strings that bring life to these mountain hollers, the vibrations that inspire such joyful dance in the young and the old, decorating time as each person’s life dances around the sun, year after year. This painting is about the raven -the messenger- heralding the stories from the past to the present, from the present to the future, from the spirits to the living, from here to beyond.
