An alligator basks in the midday sun in the Okefenokee Swamp along the Georgia-Florida line. They call it black-water country, but in this sandy-bottomed stretch the water looks as red as cranberry juice owing to tannins from decaying leaves. photo: Melissa Farlow (1992)

My friends and fellow National Geographic photographers wanted to share some of their images as we celebrate Earth Day. So we’ve been digging into The Photo Society Archive (our shared effort to showcase decades of our work for NatGeo) and pulling out some of our best images, just for today! Beginning in 1970, Earth Day is seen as the birth of the modern day environmental movement. It has since grown to an annual global event— inspiring millions to care about the planet we live on. If you’d like to see more just visit the TPS Archive link in @thephotosociety to discover more of our incredible world. Happy Earth Day everybody! (My image of the Skua is from St. Kilda, a great haven for seabirds off the west coast of Scotland.) © 2023 ➤ Life Framer Photo Competition An honor to be among the distinguished judges for the Tenth Annual Edition of Life Framer
As we enter our tenth annual Edition of Life Framer, we're delighted to present our new jury - a diverse panel of photographers, curators, gallerists and editors representing a wide range of backgrounds, institutions and photography genres. They each bring a unique perspective, but are united by a passion for creative contemporary photography.
Melissa Farlow – a Pulitzer Prize-winning documentary photographer who has worked extensively for publications such as National Geographic, Smithsonian, LIFE and Marie Claire, telling stories of the environment. She has lead workshops in Italy, Switzerland, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic, taught at Nat Geo Photo Camps, and served on the faculty of the renowned Missouri Photo Workshop.
Angela Connor – Senior Curator at the Museum of Australian Photography in Melbourne, with prior experience as both a director of commercial art galleries, and studio manager for renowned artists.
Shana Lopes – a highly experienced art historian and curator based at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, SFMoMA, following roles at the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, Arizona, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Karolin Klüppel – an in-demand photographer and Women Photograph member whose sensitive and striking work regularly returns to themes of gender, family and motherhood. She has produced editorial works for esteemed publications such as National Geographic, The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Washington Post and Spiegel.
Todd Antony – a multi-award winning advertising and fine art photographer from New Zealand whose memorable work is hard to pigeonhole, spanning diverse topics such as amputee football teams in Sierra Leone, Japanese truck driving culture, cheerleading retirees in Arizona and boundary-pushing Bolivian female climbers. It has led to advertising work for some of the world’s largest companies in Samsung, the BBC, Sony, Sky TV and Coors.
Hengki Koentjoro – an Indonesian fine art photographer and Hasselblad ambassador whose beautiful work explores “the spectral domain that lies amidst the shades of black and white”. His tranquil, minimalist landscapes are borne from a meticulous approach in which he searches for the spiritual in the physical, and have led to numerous awards from institutions such as PX3, Black and White Magazine and IPA.
We look forward to introducing each of them in more detail as they preside over our monthly themes.

MUSTANGS 🐎 SPIRIT OF THE SHRINKING WEST Americans have a love affair with horses~ especially the wild horse. Mustangs are a mythic symbol of freedom, heroism, romance, limitless possibilities, & the vanishing West.  Along with that fantasy, wild horses also embody some of the intractable complexities & contradictions of modern American life. Velma Johnston, aka “Wild Horse Annie,” is credited with pushing for 1971 legislation that first protected wild horses and burros. Today, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) spends $40 million annually caring for wild horses. Most visible are the gathers, or roundups, performed by contractors who use helicopters to drive horses into a trap to be culled. After their capture, mustangs can be adopted by the public, but few are. Much of the BLM funding is goes to providing care for the once wild horses in long-term facilities. More wild horses are held in captivity than those running wild & free. & there they stand, at the heart of a bitter debate💔 ~story by Melissa Farlow~ ~National Geographic Magazine~   (at Wild & Free) https://www.instagram.com/p/CT0_BjtMxDD/?utm_medium=tumblr
