I clicked into this article expecting to fight it, but it’s pretty legit overall.
The campaign is also working to help in a more tangible way, as well: Every time a photo is posted publicly with the hashtag #DreamBigPrincess (or one of several others, all of which cover many different languages — check out the full list here), and every time a publicly posted photo with the hashtag is liked on Facebook,Instagram, or Twitter, Disney Worldwide Services will donate $1 to Girl Up, the United Nations Foundation’s campaign aimed at empowering girls. Said Girl Up director Melissa Kilby in a press release, “Girl Up envisions a world where every girl can reach her full potential and be an advocate within her community for positive change and empowerment. The #DreamBigPrincess campaign is perfectly aligned with our goals and we’re excited to partner with Disney and this incredible group of women to spotlight what it means to dream big around the world.
I only lightly researched the organization, but it seems pretty legit - providing bikes to girls so that they can physically get to school, etc.
Props to Disney for putting their money where their giant media mouth hole is, this time.

Disney #DreamBigPrincess Photo Campaign Exhibited at UN HQ in New York
#DreamBigPrincess photos shared on social media generated 1 million likes and shares in just 5 days, enabling a US $1 million/£760k donation from Disney to United Nations Foundation’s Girl Up program
Disney announced today that its series of empowering #DreamBigPrincess photographs will be going on display as an exhibit at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City through the first week of January in collaboration with Girl Up and UNICEF, the UN Children’s Fund. The images captured by nineteen female photographers from fifteen countries showcase the inspiring stories of real-world girls and women, as part of Disney’s Dream Big, Princess initiative launched in 2016, which taps into the power of Disney Princess stories to encourage kids to follow their dreams.
“This initiative is about celebrating the positive impact of strong female role models, whether that’s Moana, Tiana or one of the amazing real-world subjects of the #DreamBigPrincess images. We’re thrilled with the response to the campaign and excited to partner with Girl Up, at the United Nations Foundation to showcase these powerful images to such an international audience,” said Jimmy Pitaro, Chairman, Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media.
The display will feature the compelling images from the campaign’s award-winning photographers and their subjects, who have turned their dreams into reality. From the youngest ever speaker at the UN to a gold-medal-winning Chinese Paralympian, the founder of the first female cycling team in Bamiyan, Afghanistan, a teenage author of a STEM coding book for kids, and a young surf champion from Brazil, the images spotlight a diverse range of stories to connect with kids and families around the world.
As well as inspiring kids with positive images and the stories behind them, the campaign aimed to make a tangible difference for girls who face challenges in achieving their dreams, through a collaboration with Girl Up, at the United Nations Foundation. For each like or post of a #DreamBigPrincess photo during the campaign timeframe, Disney donated $1 to Girl Up to support girls’ leadership and empowerment. Since their release in August, the images have been liked and shared millions of times online, enabling Disney to donate $1 million to Girl Up.
“#DreamBigPrincess really caught the collective imagination and we are so grateful to everyone who liked, shared or created their own inspiring image to support the campaign. The $1 million/£760k will help give thousands of girls around the globe the tools they need to achieve their goals and advocate on behalf of others,” said Girl Up Director, Melissa Kilby.
The campaign brought the #DreamBigPrincess message to life in a multitude of ways, including highlighting women who’ve achieved success in the face of adversity, young Girl Up Teen Advisors who’ve already helped make a positive impact on the world, and girls at play who illustrate the importance of imagination in childhood. Thousands of people also posted their own inspiring images using #DreamBigPrincess, a select number of which will be exhibited alongside the original photographs at the United Nations and supported by UNICEF, which works to protect children’s rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. A core component is to advance gender equality and the rights of girls.

Bechtel Mentors 100 Girls in First-Ever STEAM Summer Camp in the Balkans
Bechtel partnered with governments of Kosovo and the United States, as well as the leadership development initiative Girl Up and other companies to host the first-ever girls’ summer camp in the Balkans focused on science, technology, engineering, art and design and math.
One hundred girls from Kosovo, Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and the U.S. took part in the 10-day Women in Science (WiSci) Girls STEAM Camp, which was supported by the U.S. foreign aid agency Millennium Challenge Corporation and Millennium Foundation Kosovo. The youths learned about robotics and coding, drone technology, renewable energy sources and construction technologies as part of a program designed to inspire them to pursue careers in engineering and science.
The girls visited Bechtel’s recently completed Kosovo Route 6 motorway, the country’s largest-ever construction job, which links the capital city of Pristina to North Macedonia. The motorway, which connects with another Bechtel-built road that runs to Albania, promotes trade and economic integration throughout the Balkans, Western Europe and beyond. It also links with major pan-European transport Corridor X that runs between Austria and Greece.
The motorway visit was intended to demonstrate to the girls the positive impact that engineering can have on connectivity, economic growth and sustainability.
“We’re delighted to help more girls discover the extraordinary careers available in STEM, and how engineering can improve people's lives, the environment and economies. Science, tech, engineering and mathematics will continue to be a key vehicle to solve the world’s biggest challenges in the years to come and it’s vital that the teams solving these challenges come from diverse backgrounds,” Ela Ruci, Bechtel’s external affairs manager, said.
Bechtel hosted a screening of the film “Dream Big: Engineering Our World,” narrated by Academy Award-winning actor Jeff Bridges. The film features strong female role models from diverse backgrounds working on a variety of projects, from building earthquake-proof structures to foot bridges in developing countries. “Dream Big” will be rolled out to secondary schools across Kosovo in the next academic year.
“We can never overstate the importance of female leaders as role models to this generation, and the next,” Girl Up Co-Executive Director Melissa Kilby said. “Girls can do anything; it’s our responsibility to show them that,” Co-Executive Director Anna Blue added.
Other organizations involved in supporting the camp include Intel, Microsoft, Nasa, Coca-Cola, AmCham Kosovo, Jahal Solar, Kolegji AAB, Organizata TOKA, Kosova Live, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and the U.S. embassies in Pristina, Belgrade, Tirana, Podgorica and Skopje.

‘Brilliant’ man who was an inventor of the calculator dies
‘Brilliant’ man who was an inventor of the calculator dies ‘Brilliant’ man who was an inventor of the calculator dies https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
DALLAS — Jerry Merryman, one of the inventors of the handheld electronic calculator who is described by those who knew him as not only brilliant but also kind with a good sense of humour, has died. He was 86.
Merryman died Feb. 27 at a Dallas hospital from complications of heart and kidney failure, said his stepdaughter, Kim Ikovic. She said he’d been hospitalized since late December after experiencing complications during surgery to install a pacemaker.
He’s one of the three men credited with inventing the handheld calculator while working at Dallas-based Texas Instruments. The team was led by Jack Kilby, who made way for today’s computers with the invention of the integrated circuit and won the Nobel Prize, and also included James Van Tassel. The prototype they built is at the Smithsonian Institution.
“I have a Ph.D. in material science and I’ve known hundreds of scientists, professors, Nobel prize-winners and so on. Jerry Merryman was the most brilliant man that I’ve ever met. Period. Absolutely, outstandingly brilliant,” said Vernon Porter, a former TI colleague and friend. “He had an incredible memory and he had an ability to pull up formulas, information, on almost any subject.”
Another former TI colleague and friend, Ed Millis, said, “Jerry did the circuit design on this thing in three days, and if he was ever around, he’d lean over and say, ‘and nights.”‘
Merryman told NPR’s “All Things Considered” in 2013, “It was late 1965 and Jack Kilby, my boss, presented the idea of a calculator. He called some people in his office. He says, we’d like to have some sort of computing device, perhaps to replace the slide ruler. It would be nice if it were as small as this little book that I have in my hand.”
Merryman added, “Silly me, I thought we were just making a calculator, but we were creating an electronic revolution.”
The Smithsonian says that the three had made enough progress by September 1967 to apply for a patent, which was subsequently revised before the final application in June 1974.
Merryman was born near the small city of Hearne in Central Texas on June 17, 1932. By the age of 11 or so he’d become the radio repairman for the town.
“He’d scrap together a few cents to go to the movies in the afternoons and evenings and the police would come get him out … because their radios would break and he had to fix them,” said Merryman’s wife, Phyllis Merryman.
He went to Texas A&M University in College Station but didn’t finish. Instead, he went to work in the university’s department of oceanography and meteorology and before long was on an oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico measuring the force of hurricane winds. He started at Texas Instruments in 1963, at the age of 30.
His friends and family say he was always creating something. His daughter Melissa Merryman recalls him making his own tuner for their piano. Friend and former colleague Gaynel Lockhart remembers a telescope in concrete at his home with a motor attached that would allow it to follow a planet throughout the night.
Despite his accomplishments, he was humble. “He wouldn’t ever boast or brag about himself, not ever,” said Melissa Merryman, who became stepsisters with her friend Kim Ikovic when they set up their parents, who got married in 1993.
Jerry Merryman retired from TI in January 1994, the company said.
“He always said that he didn’t care anything about being famous, if his friends thought he did a good job, he was happy,” Phyllis Merryman said.

In 2016, Disney launched “Dream Big, Princess”, a campaign that encourages kids everywhere to dream big by highlighting key story moments and the inspiring qualities that each Disney Princess showcases through her adventures, such as Merida’s bravery, Cinderella’s kindness or Tiana’s perseverance. While each princess has her own unique and admirable qualities, what they all have in common is resilience and an ability to triumph over adversity to make their dreams come true. The Dream Big, Princess content series, which runs across Disney TV and digital networks globally, brings together a host of empowered moments from beloved Disney movies with the stories of real-life young role models, who have dreamed big and achieved their goals to show kids what’s possible.
The exhibit is proudly presented by UNICEF, United Nations Foundation Girl Up, and Disney, and co-hosted by the Permanent Missions of Brazil, Germany, India, and Kenya. The exhibit will be open for public viewing in the UN visitors lobby via pre-scheduled guided tours Monday-Friday or on the weekends via a UN security pass.

The Blow return with self-released new album Brand New Abyss TODAY, talk to TMT about tour with EMA and women producers web project
The mid-20th century writer, editor, and literary critic Edmund Wilson famously said, “No two persons ever read the same book.” Although certainly viable as a theory of literature, the same individual creative interpretation theory could be applied to any artistic endeavor. Some musical artists — like electro-pop excitement-seekers The Blow — have the knack of wringing more genuine emotionally-charged goodies out of music + words than most. Bold souls who want more will be ecstatic to hear that the band’s new self-released album is out TODAY! Brand New Abyss is Khaela Maricich’s and Melissa Dyne’s latest dancefloor call-to-arms, and it is a more hands-on affair than previous releases — literally, because this time around, the duo have built a physical system of modular synths for their sounds rather than constructing sample-based songs. We asked the duo about the change in sound development and its adaptability to performance. We’ve spent so much time building this rig that we can use to produce electronic music in a live setting with just the two of us, it’s taken years figure out how to create sounds from scratch and put them all together and basically to make a little home for ourselves out of frequency. When we get ourselves into a groove it feels like we are taking our sound-house around with us, setting it up on each stage we play on, leaning back and stretching out and making ourselves comfortable with the audiences in a deeper way than we’ve either ever really done before. The system is kind of a beast to carry around; it’s a fair number of cases to load in and out every night, so this deeper comfort makes it all really worth it! As the leading Marxist/Freudian theorist Edmund Wilson once quipped, “There is nothing more demoralizing than a small but adequate income.” To make sure Maricich and Dyne don’t fall into this discouraging wage bracket, get over to PledgeMusic and pick up a copy of Brand New Abyss — either as a standalone CD/DL/LP or as part of an impressive amount of charming packages. Singles have been trickling out over the past couple of months, including the NPR-premiered ear-rally “Get Up,” the Bust-premiere of “The Woman You Want Her to Be,” and the refined intensity of “Think About Me,” viewable down below. “America’s greatest reader” Edmund Wilson once claimed, “What a gulf between the self which experiences and the self which describes experience.” Bridge this experience gulf within yourself by witnessing the striking spectacle of The Blow live. All shows from October 26 onward are with the red-hot EMA, who released her compelling Exile in the Outer Ring album last month. To hammer the point home: these upcoming shows will be deadly fun, and YES you should be going to at least one of them. Rightfully so, The Blow is pumped for the tour and playing with EMA: We are so excited about the tour. We are calling it the ‘Power Convergence’ tour — we’ve found a kindred punk spirit in EMA, she seems equally fed up with the current B.S. and ready to address it with her special mid-western cool-stare perspective, and we are really happy to be merging forces with her. We in fact picked special local acts in every city to help us converge even more powers, and the line-up of performers is really inspiring. There are so many people out there doing such cool stuff. Lastly, all thoughts of the dreamy Edmund Wilson aside, The Blow is never just about hype-cycle trivialities like “new albums” and “new tours.” All music fans should do themselves a huge favor and take some time to browse around Woman Producer, a site run by the act that features great vintage pics of, well, woman producers (it is the name of the site!), complete with an exhaustive list of profile links. It also contains infos on past panel discussion events. About the site, the groop affirms, We designed it with the hope that people could get lost in the depth of information there is out there about women/trans/non-binary sound makers. Yes, we would love to do more events to bring people together around the topic of shredding apart the bored old gender expectations. It seems like we should be so far beyond having to make distinctions around gender, like women being producers really shouldn’t be any kind of revolutionary, but apparently, it’s still not seen as totally commonplace, so there’s still a lot to talk about and discover. Alright, enough talk. It’s time to “get up” and get at all-things-Blow! Because, as serial adulterer and piss-poor drunk Edmund Wilson once said, “Oh! Who gives a fuck about Edmund Wilson!” Brand New Abyss tracklisting: 01. Peaceful Easy Feeling 02. Dark Cold Magic 03. So There 04. The Greatest Love of All 05. The Woman You Want Her to Be 06.
