I just queued up a post about sustainable fabrics and started to write something in the tags before realizing that it was drifting away from the point
but PSA: with the caveat that the most sustainable item of clothing is the one that's already in your closet, I would suggest that if you are someone who struggles with temperature regulation, you should seriously consider adding more linen and wool to your wardrobe. determining the "true" environmental impact of various fibers is v complicated, but for a start they both use significantly less water than conventional cotton, and imo the improvement they've had on my quality of life is well worth the substitution.
linen and wool are by far the best fabrics for temperature regulation--the former is lighter and more breathable than cotton and will keep you cooler in the summer, the latter is breathable but heavier and more insulating and will keep you warmer in the winter, even if it gets wet. (there's actually a saying among people who hike/do winter sports that "cotton kills" because you are more prone to hypothermia in cotton undergarments than in wool.) do not even get me started on linen/wool vs polyester.
this is something that I think is especially important given higher cost of heating lately, higher temperatures due to climate change, and the number of people who have health conditions or medications that make them sensitive to heat. this isn't to say that your clothing/bedding choices will compensate for a livable environment, but as someone who used to wake up 2-3 times a week sweating in synthetic sheets for four months of the year, and shiver in an inadequately heated room for another three, these little swaps can seriously make extreme temperatures a little more bearable.
that being said, wool and linen do tend to be more expensive, so if you're looking to get the most bang for your buck, I would recommend starting with:
linen sheets, even just a fitted sheet (some companies do sell them solo). overheating while sleeping is literally the worst.
linen pants, especially if you work in a job that doesn't allow you to wear shorts. linen shirts are also nice, but even cotton/poly shirts tend to be thinner than pants and might already be short-sleeved/you can roll up the sleeves, so the impact of pants will be more immediate.
a chunky wool sweater. avoid cashmere, and merino unless it has cables--these are very soft, lovely wools, but they're generally pretty light and made more for their softness than their insulation properties. for maximum warmth, you don't want a thin "office sweater," you want a "my Irish gran knit this in her cottage on the windy coast" sweater.
wool socks. these are more likely to keep you dry and warm if you're walking through slush or rain, in addition to just general walking-around-the-house warmth. for these I would say the type of wool matters a little less, generally because you do want socks that are somewhat lightweight so you can wear them in shoes. and just FYI you're also more likely to see wool socks blended with silk, nylon, or spandex for strength and elasticity, so don't drive yourself up the wall trying to find the mythical 100% wool sock. even hobby knitters tend to blend wool with something because of the amount of friction that wears on socks.
again! the most sustainable type of clothing is what you already own. but some of these are the kinds of small swaps you can definitely make over time, and you might find them genuinely helpful.
Finally, I got to give this baby sweater to my friend. The yarn is LolaBean Yarn Company Soy Bean (DK weight merino) in the Georgia Peach colorway. I got the yarn at the Cece's Wool booth at MDSW. The pattern is Vittorio Cardigan by OGE Knitwear Designs. It was a quick and easy knit.
i'm so sorry this is such a random question lol but i've been following you for a little and I know that you knit right? and I was wondering if you had any favourite yarn fibres or brands you like to use?
hi this is the best ask ever. i love knitting and i love yarn!!! over the last few years i've only bought yarn i really love & that is good quality - i spend so much time on the knitting that i really want to be conscious of what im choosing to use. i recommend reading Slow Knitting which really opened the door for me on yarn & knitting.
some of my favourite yarns:
tibetan cloud (myak) - i love this yarn. it's so soft and beautiful and comes in a great variety of colours. it's a bit on the pricey side, so i wait for sales & buy a ton. one skein goes a decently long way. i have knit 2 junko okamoto sweaters with this yarn & plan to make a third.
le gros silk and mohair (biches et buches) - this is a french company that has a wonderful range of yarn, including a really light lambswool. i love their silk/mohair. it's beautiful by itself - like in this shawl which i wear daily in the autumn/winter - or held together with a different yarn - i made some lovely mittens this way.
woolstok (blue sky fibers) - this is an aran or so yarn that is wonderful for projects. its soft but very sturdy - 100% highland wool - and comes in a bunch of really rustic-y colours. i made 2 versions of the Sheep Camp Sweater with this yarn and i loved working with it.
sandnes garn - they have a bunch of different yarns which are quite nice. they come in many many colours, so they're wonderful for bright designs. i've knit with their merino wool double sunday and it was quite nice. they're also easy to come by at a lot of yarn stores. i'm currently working on the Porcelain Sweater which uses wool from sandnes garn (and is a gorgeous knit so far).
i generally find patterns that really intrigue me or that i love and then work backwards from there. i really recommend Ravelry if you're not on it already. if i don't have access to a yarn that i'm interested in or that is needed for a pattern, they have a whole section about comparable yarns. you can also see what people used for their own projects for certain patterns (under the 'projects' tab), which helps me figure out what yarn to substitute with.
anyways i hope this was helpful! if you're in toronto, i can let you in on all my favourite knitting stores!
This issue emphasizes pullovers, with a total of 9 of the, including 1 tunic, and also including some re-prints from the Wool Studio digital magazine. There are also a vest, a hat with matching mitts, and a cowl
Among the new patterns, you see the Taskette Pullover in lilac on the cover. It features a clever cabling that looks like you are weaving the knitting. Laura Barker designed it in Manos del Uruguay Alegria Grande which is a DK or light worsted yarn of superwash Merino and synthetic blend. It is a 3 out of 4 for difficulty. The caramel and brown lattice patterned sweater is Sonneteer Sweater by Heather David and combines garter stitches and slip-stitch cables. It is made in Peace Fleece Worsted which mixes wool and mohair and it is another 3 out of 4 as are all the pullovers I am featuring. Moira Engel did the aran style sweater with heavy cables called Dizen Sweater, which is made of Brown Sheep Company’s Prairie Spun DK, a 100% wool yarn. The cable patterns are all charted for all of these patterns
Another cabled pattern, but with the interest running down the sleeves is Charles Pullover by Michele Wang which is one of the reprints. It has an over-sized fit and saddle shoulders and is done in The Fibre Co’s Arranmore which is a Merino, cashmere, silk blend. The boxy grey pullover is another reprint. This is called Cartesian Pullover, designed by Irina Anikeeva, and done in Trendsetter Yarns Placid, a bulky weight of cashmere, Merino, nylon blend.
Faunus Hat, which you see here in green comes with matching mitts and is 2 out of 4 for difficulty. Kelly Sandusky scattered cables motifs on the front of it but stuck to the practical ribbed hemline. It is done in O-Wool O-Wash Fingering, an organic Merino wool.
Kim McBrien Evans wrote the 6 page article on making sweaters that fit which includes several charts to allow you to measure yourself and calculate what you like in the cut of a sweater. She also has tips on evaluating a gauge swatch for comfort and durability as well as for the drape of the fabric. A QR code gives you a hand little PDF to fill in with your own numbers. There are also columns on new notions and new yarns.

Understanding the Different Types of Yarn Produced by Delhi Manufacturers
When it comes to yarn production, Delhi stands out as a significant hub, known for its diverse range of yarn offerings. From luxurious blends to practical synthetics, the city's yarn manufacturers are crafting products that cater to a wide array of textile needs. In this blog, we'll explore the various types of yarn produced by Delhi manufacturers, with a special focus on polyester cotton knitted yarns and notable industry players like SD Polytech.
1. Polyester Cotton Knitted Yarns: A Blend of Durability and Comfort
One of the most popular yarns produced by Delhi manufacturers is the polyester cotton knitted yarn. This type of yarn combines the best of both worlds—polyester's durability and cotton's softness. Polyester cotton knitted yarns are known for their strength, resistance to wear and tear, and easy maintenance, making them ideal for a variety of applications from casual wear to home textiles.
Durability: Polyester adds resilience to the yarn, ensuring that it withstands frequent use and washing.
Comfort: Cotton contributes to the softness and breathability of the yarn, enhancing comfort for the wearer.
Versatility: This yarn is used in making everything from T-shirts and sweaters to upholstery fabrics, reflecting its wide appeal.
2. Wool Yarns: Classic Warmth and Rich Texture
Wool yarn remains a staple in Delhi's yarn manufacturing industry, prized for its warmth and elasticity. Wool is ideal for colder climates, offering excellent insulation and a natural ability to wick moisture away from the skin. Delhi manufacturers produce various types of wool yarns, including merino, cashmere, and alpaca blends, each offering unique properties and textures.
3. Acrylic Yarns: Affordable and Easy-Care
Acrylic yarns are another popular choice among Delhi's yarn manufacturers. Known for their affordability and ease of care, acrylic yarns are perfect for those on a budget or for projects that require frequent washing. They come in a myriad of colors and can mimic the feel of natural fibers while offering durability and colorfastness.
4. Silk Yarns: Luxurious and Elegant
For high-end textiles, silk yarn is a go-to choice. Produced by select manufacturers in Delhi, silk yarn boasts a luxurious sheen and a smooth texture that elevates any garment. Ideal for making elegant shawls, scarves, and fine garments, silk yarn is favored for its natural luster and drape.
5. Blended Yarns: Custom Solutions for Specific Needs
yarn manufacturer delhi also excel in creating blended yarns, which combine different fibers to achieve specific qualities. Blends might include a mix of wool and acrylic for added warmth and affordability or polyester and cotton for a balance of durability and comfort. SD Polytech, a leading player in the industry, specializes in producing high-quality blended yarns that meet various market demands.
6. Specialty Yarns: Innovative and Niche Products
In addition to the more common types of yarn, Delhi manufacturers also produce specialty yarns designed for niche markets. These might include yarns with unique textures, colors, or functional properties such as anti-microbial treatments or UV resistance. These innovative products are often the result of ongoing research and development efforts to meet evolving consumer preferences.
Conclusion
Understanding the different types of yarn produced by Delhi manufacturers can help you make informed decisions whether you’re a textile enthusiast, a designer, or a business owner. From the versatile polyester cotton knitted yarns to luxurious silk and innovative specialty yarns, Delhi’s yarn industry offers a rich variety of products to suit diverse needs. Notably, companies like SD Polytech play a significant role in pushing the boundaries of yarn production, ensuring that the market continues to receive high-quality, innovative solutions.
