So we took the New Jersey Transit to New York City

The modern coach bus goes to the 42nd Street Port Authority. The Port Authority is one of the many hubs of ground transportation in NYC. Most of your major bus companies are located there and you can make connections with almost every subway line via a walking tunnel to Times Square. The rail hubs are Grand Central Station, connected by subway shuttle from Times Square, and Penn Station, a two-stop jaunt on the subway. The subway system in Manhattan is the quickest and most efficient form of transportation on the island, with stops within four to six blocks of each other. The system used to be confusing with many independent lines designated by different letters: IRT, BMT, etc. Today the various routes are designated by colors and either numbers or letters. A map shows all of the routes and their connecting points. The subways system today is very easy to follow. It is also safe, contrary to some people's perceptions. Here are a few little known facts about the system. The tunnels go at least eight stories below the ground. There are miles of mazes even under the tubes themselves, where the homeless have made their homes. On one of the lines from Manhattan to Queens, the tracks literally ride on water under the East River. Even engineers do not know how to correct the problem. The money collected at the ticket booths is sent by a special train which travels the system. The trains are very long, at least ten cars in length. Most of the cars have benches along the sides, which leaves most of the car for standing room. There are three exits on each side of the car, which allows quick entrance and egress. The riders are called strap hangers, because they hold on to straps hanging from the ceiling while riding. The newer cars post the next stop on signs in the car. Some even have a map of the route and the present location of the car lit up on the map.

The city of New York consists of five Boroughs: Kings (Manhattan), Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn, and Richmond (Staten Island). All of the boroughs are connected by subway or train or bus, except for Staten Island which is serviced by the famed ferry. More about the different areas when we visit them.

Went for desert at Cafe Lalo, where part of the movie "You've Got Mail" was filmed. Then we walked up Broadway to Fairfield Market, a few blocks South of World famous Zabars, a grocery and kitchen appliance store (but so much more: an experience). I was surprised by the variety of fresh produce and meats, fish, and poultry and relatively low prices. The aisles are very narrow in the store, due to the fact that space is at a premium in Manhattan. Buy an unlimited Metro Pass, $21.00 for the week, and hop on a Downtown bound bus on Broadway. Downtown means towards the Battery, the Southernmost point of Manhattan.

Uptown is Northbound and Cross-town is either to the East River(East Side) or the Hudson River(West Side). What a wonderful and safe way to see the city. We passed by Columbus Circle, the edge of Central Park, Julliard, Lincoln Center, the Theater District, and of course glitzy vibrant Times Square. The bus then turned East on 42nd Street and passed by the Public Library, Grand Central Station, and ended at The United Nations Building.

As long as fate brought us there, we toured the famed United Nations building. Mati from Senegal in Western Africa, was our tour guide and was very knowledgeable about the workings of the UN. It is not the paper tiger that some people claim it is. It is a real forum for all of the nations of the world to discuss mutual concerns: military conflicts, land mines, disease, hunger, trade, etc. Perhaps the real tigers are the ones who want to control the other nations or make huge profits by fostering these problems. Some of the Chambers were in use, namely the Security Council, and the Council for Economic and Social Justice. They were in session.

The Lexington Avenue bus goes further Downtown. Along the way we passed Chinatown, the Bowery, Little Italy, skirted Greenwich Village, and ended at city hall. There are so many different types of restaurants in NY that you could eat at a different one every single night and not repeat yourself for your entire lifetime.

Today we rode the subways. First we went Uptown to the Northern tip of Manhattan to Tryon Park and the fort. This is the highest point on Manhattan, overlooking both the Hudson and the East Rivers. At the northern most point of the park is The Cloisters Museum. This unique museum consists of five medieval cloisters rescued from buildings being demolished in Europe, along with chapels and numerous artifacts. Some of the statuary was being used as scarecrows by farmers, while others were found in junk piles. One outstanding room is the Unicorn Tapestries, which tell of the hunt, death, and resurrection of the unicorn-a symbol of Jesus Christ. The tapestries contain over one hundred different species of medieval plants woven into the stories. They are just breathtaking not only from their beauty but also from the textures of the weave.

We went back to Times Square and then hopped on the route #7 subway to Queens and Flushing Meadows, the site of the 1963 Worlds Fair with its massive sculpture of the world. On either side of the train station are Shea Stadium, home of the NY Mets baseball team and Arthur Ashe Stadium, site of the US Open Tennis Tournament. Back on the train to Times Square and on to W route to Coney Island at the tip of Brooklyn. We ate a Nathan's World Famous Hot Dog. It cannot compare to a Chicago Vienna Hot Dog. The amusement park was closed, open only on weekends while school is in session. The Cyclone, their famous roller coaster, had just closed up. Thank our growling stomachs for this lack of timing. It is open daily from 12:00 to 4:00. The coaster does not look like much. But looks are deceiving. This baby shakes, rattles, and rolls. I wanted to see if it still gave me the same thrills as the last time I rode it in 1963. But that was to be for a later day, which never came.

This day was reserved to visit the grand dame of New York City, the Statue of Liberty. Taking the train to Battery Park at the lower tip of Manhattan, we purchased our tickets at the Castle Clinton, once a fortress guardian for the harbor, then a concert venue (the American debut of Jenny Lind), then an immigration port of entry, and now the ticket office for our lady. Circular in design, it is only fitting that one must pass through a fortress to gain access to greet the great lady. On the fifteen minute boat trip to Governors Island it is easy to imagine the awe and deep feelings of overwhelming joy of the millions of immigrants who first envisioned her while sailing through the Verrazano Narrows into New York Harbor. The statue, donated by France over one hundred years ago, stands on another fort, one of five which guarded the harbor. The pedestal rises eleven stories and the lady herself stands one hundred fifty-one feet. Once again security is very tight and visitors are not allowed either in the museum, on the pedestal, or into the crown. But just being in her presence was as said in Hebrew, "Dayenu" (It would have been enough).

Embarking on the boat again we went to Ellis Island, built in 1892 to process the great flood of immigrants. Both of our ancestors arrived before that date, so they might have come through Castle Clinton, AKA, Gardens or a different port of entry. Charlie Walker was our Ranger tour guide. Once a drill instructor, he has a voice to match. He also missed his calling to the stage, because the tour he gave was more of a living presentation with a cast of characters than a boring recitation of facts and figures. polyamorous dating site He definitely loves his job. The experience of Ellis Island was reserved for passengers in steerage class. Remembering the movie "Titanic", steerage was the lowest of the low. The passengers in first and second class were processed on board ship. After they disembarked, the ship proceeded to Ellis Island. There the steerage class ran the gauntlet of the eyes of the inspectors. I was reminded of the pictures of the holocaust where the prisoners were "selected". If you walked funny, protested, or looked frail, your clothing was chalk-marked for further inspection and processing. Many of these people were fleeing tyrannical regimes and were terrified of uniformed men. Here in America they were being ordered about by more men. Families were separated, while the processing took place- men on one side and women and children on the other side of the room. The good news is that the process generally took less than five hours and only 2% of the twelve million immigrants were deported back to their home lands. The ones who remained took the trains Westbound out of New Jersey or stayed in NYC, digging the subways or other back breaking jobs.

Arriving back at Battery Park we walked to Broadway. At the entrance was the sculpture of the Peace Globe which stood in the World Trade Center Plaza. Miraculously it withstood the tragedy and is now at the foot of Broadway being kept vigil by an eternal flame. Although damaged, the globe still stands for peace in this world.

Walked through the financial district, which looks like a war zone, barricades and armed police patrolling the area. Our goal was Federal Hall at the corners of Nassau, Broad and Wall streets. Federal Hall was the first capital of the United States. Here Washington was sworn in as president and the Congress met. The building has long been torn down. In its place is a Neo-Classical designed building, Parthenon-like exterior and Pantheon-like interior. Used as a customs house and then as a depository for US gold reserves during the Civil War, it is now a museum remembering our first capital. One of their prized possessions is the Bible which Washington used for his inauguration (the one that President Bartlett wanted to use on "The West Wing").

Walking down famed Wall Street, where never have so many been raped by so few (written over five years ago), we went into Trinity Church where many come to pray after losing their life savings down the street. Built in 1696, the church has withstood many Wall Street crashes. Notable people buried there include Alexander Hamilton and Robert Fulton.

Many people talked to us about visiting St. John the Divine Cathedral. Happily, we took their advice. Started in 1892, this Gothic house of worship is over two football fields in length. The cathedral is still unfinished, but is still spectacular. Each set of stained glass windows has a different theme: poetry, medicine, law, etc. Standing in the immense interior is a humbling experience not to be missed. Around the high altar are side chapels, one which is reserved for local artists to show their work. At this time the children from the Cathedral's school have their artwork on display.

From St John's is a short bus ride to Grant's tomb, where he and his wife lay at rest. The interior is similar to Napoleon's tomb in Paris. Mrs.Grant chose New York, because the people were kind to them after they had become penniless. The tomb sits high on the palisades overlooking Riverside Park and the Hudson River.

Adjacent to the tomb is Sukaru Park, so named because of the numerous cherry trees in the park, which were donated by the Japanese government. In the park is a statue of General Daniel Butterworth, the composer of Taps (remember Berkeley Plantation in Virginia). He is looking over to Grant's tomb, keeping his eyes on that hallowed ground.

Across the street is Riverside Church, a Presbyterian Church noted for its grand carillon of over seventy bells. The nave of the church is Gothic in style, but not quite as large St. John's. The Church is part of Union Theological Seminary, which is connected with Columbia University also present in the neighborhood.

Hopped on the train again to Theodore Roosevelt's Birthplace. This is a large brownstone at 28 East 20th Street. The original house was torn down and a reconstructed one was erected according the similar design plans of others in the neighborhood. His sisters, still alive gave instructions about floor plans and the arrangement of furniture in the house, as they had remembered. Roosevelt, born in to a very wealthy family, suffered from asthma. After losing his first wife and mother within the same week, he moved out to North Dakota to find himself. There he rediscovered his love for nature and the independence of the common working man. To prove his virility, he longed for a war, which he got when the Battleship Maine blew up in Havana Harbor, Cuba. The Spanish were blamed for the sinking. He formed the Rough Riders in San Antonio, Texas, and the rest is history. Of his presidency he claimed that the building of the Panama Canal was his greatest achievement. Even though he was a war monger and empire builder, he is the first American to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his help in ending the Russian Japanese War.

A short distance South is Greenwich Village, not quite the Bohemian atmosphere it was in the 60s. It is still a thriving area of restaurants, small theaters, interesting shops, and people watching. Washington Square, the quasi-official entrance to the area, still has its checker and chess tables set up with games constantly going on.

Taiwan Trip 2018

I’ve always been curious about what the heart of Asia can offer and by taking advantage of its government’s initiative for Free Visa to attract more tourists, it’s time to get to know this neighboring country.

I turned to AirAsia for cheap flights and got a good deal for Taiwan from Dec. 17-21. The dates are the best as they’re literally 1 week before the holiday break kicks off so I don’t need to worry about the “back to reality” dillemma that we get right after spending a holiday away from home then going back straight to work.

I did a lot of research by reading blogs and watching vlogs on Youtube. The information I got from the two mediums really helped me out in planning my 4 days trip. AirAsia flights to Taiwan from Clark are always at night so I only have 4 days instead of 5.

The next thing I did after securing my flight tickets, I looked for discounted hotels/hostels. I always turn to Agoda because they have the cheapest accommodation deals. Been booking hotels with them since 2016. I never had an issue and their customer service, although the queue is too long, you’ll spend a tantamount of time waiting on the line for a rep to attend to your concerns, is superb. Agoda also have the options for “pay nothing until” or “pay at the property”. I also considered looking through Airbnb but in the end, I found myself booking two accommodations via Agoda. Mind you, always read the reviews of people for that hotel you want to book. It will definitely help you decide if it’s the right one for you.

I also thought of booking activities, buy tickets and rentals online (aside from flight tickets) when planning my trip. I turned to two travel applications: Klook and KKday.

Klook:

-Rental of 4G Wifi Mobile Broadband I got on Sale. My usage is 5 days. The pickup location is right at the Arrival Area of Taoyuan Airport T1. It was an easy transaction, instructions on the Klook voucher is accurate. I presented the QR code on the voucher on my phone, my passport and Debit card (credit card can be used too). The card is required so when you loose or damage the device, they’ll charge you. Signed the receipt and that’s it! The device was low on power charge though, so I got to use it the next day but boy, it’s so fast! No lagging anywhere I go in Taiwan. The price shown below is for 1 day use only. So the price will multiply depending on how many days you’re going to use it.

-Taichung World Flora Expo Ticket. This ticket is for the entrance fee of the three world flora expo sites. I’ll go into detail of the itinerary later on.

KKDAY:

-booked a Day Tour Package for three tourist spots: Yehliu Geopark, Shifen and Jiufen.

What you need to know for first time travelers in Taiwan like me:

1. If your arrival time and immigration process allows it, catch the airport MRT going to Taipei or any other places in Taiwan. Otherwise, take a bus or Uber or Taxi. I was lucky to catch the MRT. MRT Airport Operating hours: 6am - 12am only.

2. Purchase the Easycard. It’s going to be your bestfriend in going around the city and neighboring states/provinces. It costs NTD$500 - there is a NTD$100 fee so your balance on the card will be NTD$400. The Easycard can be used both in MRT and Bus. This is available to purchase at any Information booth in MRT stations. Taiwan has a very systematic and easy to understand transportation system so I’m really happy about it. It’s so easy going up and down stations to your destinations.

3. It’s December, it’s Winter. Do you need to wear a jacket? I would suggest to search for the weather forecast from the duration of your stay. In my case, it never rained. It was sunny. The lowest temperature I experienced was just 17degrees Celcius -at night. Temperatures tend to get low at sun down. During the day, while wearing a fleece jacket, puffer jacket and a sweater, met with humidity and highest temp of 28degress Celcius, I got too sweaty!! So on my last day in Taiwan, I was wearing a sando and shorts. No sweat, no cold feeling though I attracted attention for wearing differently. I can’t help it, I’m a tropical island girl so 17, 20, or 28 degress are not cold enough for me except when I’m about to have my period, my body temps get low, I’m shivering at 20 degress at the office aircon. Lol. But you will notice the Taiwanese people are still wearing layered jackets I think it’s because they just got used to wearing those clothing during Winter months. And anyway, most of the year, it’s raining in Taiwan and the rain adds to the cold temperature so yeah, maybe that’s the reason. I was just lucky I guess that the duration of my visit was sunny, no rains at all.

4. Taiwanese are very friendly, accommodating and helpful that in spite of language barrier, they will proactively help you out when they see you confused or trying to figure out which way to go. That alone made my journey very easy and I really felt safe there.

5. Speaking of language barrier, taxi drivers speak little to no English and they’re having a hard time understanding what you’re trying to say. So I suggest that you prepare an address of your destination that’s written in Chinese. When I was going to the hostel from Taipei Main Station, the taxi driver was clever enough to call the hostel to get the address in Mandarin.

6. There’s plenty of climbing and walking from stations to stations and hiking trails. So you must wear comfortable shoes, and you should be an active person to prevent yourself from suffering painful legs and knees.

7. Get a copy of the Taipei Metro Guide pamphlet. It will help you navigate which train line to take to get to your destinations. You can get it from the Information booth or train officers around the stations. You can also get a soft copy online at english.metro.taipei -just type it as it is on your web browser.

What I actually able to fulfill: all of the above except the ones written on RED. Yes. I ran out of time, I wasn’t able to squeeze them to the schedule.

Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial - this is just a walking distance from the hostel I stayed in. No entrance fee as it is a public place. I was in awe at how huge those traditional structures are and how spacious the whole park is. It’s magnificent! Also, the Exit 5 of the Chiang Kai-Shek MRT station is right in the compound.

Elephant Mountain - it’s a hiking trail where you can get a great view of Taipei 101 and the city from afar. It is a popular destination for both locals and tourists alike. This is where my knees got in real trouble, I could use a wheelchair! The steps are too steep going up, I was not able to finish the trail and get to the boulders because my legs, specially my knees were giving up. This is the price to pay for not being an active person. Though, there is a spot, a balcony where you can already take a photo and see the city from there without going up to the boulders. That’s where I stopped and got the below 2nd photo.

How to get here: from any MRT station in my case, Chiang Kai-Shek Exit 4 station, take the RED line to Xiangshan station and go to Exit 2. From Exit 2, go straight to the park then turn left at the end of the park, go straight then turn right. Continue walking straight until you see the sign on the above photo on the left side of the street. When in doubt, just Google then look for the result from “Guide to Taipei”. Tried pasting the link here but this silly tumblr can’t save it, the app crashes.

Mala YuanYang Hotpot at Ximending - took a lunch at this unlimited hotpot that is popular to tourists. This place gets really crowded mostly by Korean tourists. The lunch costs NTD$545 and dinner is NTD$635. You can have unlimited premium meats, seafood and other hotpot essentials, unlimited drinks with plenty of varieties and this is the most exciting part: unlimited Häagen-Dazs and Movenpick ice cream!!! Aside from other desserts like fruits, puddings and egg tart. The only limited though, is time. Your lunch and dinner is limited to only 2 hours. It is located in Ximending which is also happens to be Taipei’s shopping district. So in this stop, I was able to hit two places in one go. And I think Ximending is livelier at night. So if you want to get dinner instead of lunch at Mala Hotpot, then I think that’s a better idea.

How to get here: Ximen station is your drop point station. It is in the Blue and Green lines as it also serves as the transfer station for Green line. Blue line has transfer stations from Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center station and Zhongxiao Fuxing station from the Brown line, Taipei Main Station from the Red line, Zhongxiao Xinsheng from the Orange line, and Ximen station from the Green line. From where I was at Xiongshan station of the Red line, I dropped off the Chiang Kai-Shek station then transferred to the Green line and stopped at Ximen station.

Taipie 101 - the most famous landmark of Taiwan. It’s astonishing! Since it’s sunny on the day I went up the Taipei 101 Observatory, I was able to see the whole city, crystal clear! What I forgot to do though is to get to the 91st floor observatory. The main observatory is at the 89th floor and it took us 37seconds to get there from the 5th floor where the ticket for the observatory is being sold at NTD$600 per person. It is indeed the fastest lift!

How to get here: Take the RED line going to Taipei 101/World Trade Center station.

Maokong Gondola - it’s a gondola ride with three mountain stops. The last stop is the Maokong village where there are a bunch of tea shops. It is better to get there before sunset to see the city sunset while enjoying a tea. Unfortunately in my case, I got to ride the gondola past 5pm. Night time comes early at 5pm. But I get to see the city at night while riding the gondola and enjoying the cold breeze.

How to get here: from Taipei 101 station which is in the RED line, take the same line to Daan Park station which is the transfer station for the Brown line. Take the Brown line going to Taipei Zoo station. From Taipei Zoo staition, just follow the signs that leads to the Maokong Gondola. It will cost you a total of NTD$200 for a round trip from the gondola.

Chun Sui Tang Cultural Tea House - based on Google search, it is the one that started the Milk Tea craze! They also have the Taiwanese Beef Noodle soup which is also a famous Taiwanese dish. Hitting two birds with one stone. This is where I had my dinner. The milk tea tastes bittersweet which I really like. The beef noodle soup tastes good too! The servings are huge!

How to get here: Take the Red line going to Chiang Kai-shek station. Go to Exit 5. The restaurant is located just under the stairs of the Chaing Kai-Shek Concert Hall.

Liberty bridge

I feel vibrations travel up through my legs as a tram passes by on the bridge, making everything slightly rumble. The sun is still out, the air is cool. I walk till the middle where I jump up on the lowest part of the pillar and pull my legs up to cross them. I look around, it's busy but not quite like during summer. It's too late in the year to watch the sunset from here, it dips under the horizon behind the hill by now. But it's still breathtakingly beautiful. Although everything nearby is noisy, when you look at the river and the other bridges in the distance, it all looks so peaceful. The hill, the castle, the houses on the riverbank, it looks so still, like it's a picture.

It's been a month of learning. About the earth, the universe, maths and physics, rocks, baking, pastries and myself. Mostly myself. I'm not saying the formula to calculate the brightness of stars isn't exciting me. Or the fact that I haven't burned myself on any of the ovens yet or that I can already make hearts of top of lattes out of foam. It does, but finally I've found who I really am. I always thought it was weird how people leave their homes to go and find themselves. I didn't understand how that would help, what difference that makes. Just not being where they have always been. That surely must be the place where you know yourself the best. But I think until a few weeks ago I didn't even really know what my real personality was like either. I've spent 22 years right next to my parents, never leaving their side for more than 5 days. I was the baby of the family, the little girl, the one everyone loved so much and who never really had to worry about anything, not even in later life. Because mum would be there to solve anything that came up since she "knows it better". I just had a comfortable life, despite the bad things we went through, because I didn't have a say in those either. I was regarded as not old enough yet, no matter how much time has passed by. This, of course, makes you incompetent. I believed what everyone said, what my mum said. Good and bad equally. She loves me, she does. But she also worries about me, not wanting anything bad to happen anymore and this worry sometimes makes more damage than she ever intended. Her concerned questions and comments poisen my mind. "Is your stomach okay?" I think so, but is it really? "What's wrong, you look off." Maybe something is wrong. "Have you taken your medication?" I have, like I've been for years. "You look anxious again." Do I really get anxious as much as she says? "I'm worried about what will happen to you when you move out." Would I be able to handle it? "Maybe you should consider antidepressants just to make sure." My mind is falling apart. It all comes from a good place. But it still corrupted my mind over the years and years to the point that I thought there really is something wrong with me. That maybe I really am messed up and too weak to deal with challenges. That I should just stay here, at this safe spot and never change anything. So for years I didn't, the thought of being away from my family caused me panic attacks. And then the past few months came and I realized that things can't stay like this, which freaked me out even more. But I had a goal, a motivation in the form of the girl who I've been dating for a year now. I needed to start school, work, find my strength to stand on my own. And I was about to do it on my own. No meds to improve my mood or lessen my anxiety. Just my girl and her telling me every single day what is our dream. Days before the move I was all over the place emotionally. Thinking how my parents and my brother are all thinking that I'll come home crying after the first night like how I've been doing for years when I tried visiting them. Every single time, without a fail. I was scared of that, even though I knew that I was already so much better than I used to be. But I didn't cry or want to leave. I didn't and I was surprised. Simply by how fine I was from the very first day. I'm not anxious, nothing hurts, my mind is focused. I don't even miss being home and I miss my parents a thousand times less than I thought I would. I'm not even taking the pills anymore, I stopped, finally having the chance of seeing how my body would react without my mum shouting at me. This independence, the lack of voices to influence me made me realize that there is much more to me than the fragile girl. I'm tough. I study, work, take up all these challenges and I've never felt better about myself in my life. I feel purposeful as cheezy as that sounds and I feel less scared about being alone too. Because I can solve my own problems, I can take care of myself. So I jump off from where I'm sitting and walk my way to the metro station. Still a happy place, but not the happiest anymore. And that's a definite improvement.

My Love, I need to thank you. Until forever, every single day. It's tough love, you were right about that but it's exactly what I needed, someone to force me out of my situation even if it meant crying and pain sometimes. Look how much it paid off. It literally changed my life and how I think about myself. I don't need the safety of the known like how I thought I did. Only a goal and I have you for that. I love you endlessly, the Moon's distance wouldn't even compare to it. Thank you, thank you, thank you, you're mine hero without really knowing it and I'll be yours in return, promise.

Day 179: To Amsterdam

After nearly six months abroad, one of the most bittersweet days of the trip was finally upon us. When Jessica and I checked out of our Airbnb, it would be our last checkout out as a duo. When we boarded the train out of Bruges, it would be our last major train ride of the trip. In one more day, we'd have finally made it 180 days abroad. They hadn't all been easy, but every one of them was a precious experience in its own right---at least in retrospect. And there are very few people either of us can imagine having done it with instead.

But we weren't done yet. For our final week in Europe, we'd be taking a victory lap around Holland, and we'd be doing it with family.

Jessica's brother Nic had already landed in Amsterdam and had been keeping our hotel room warm for us the past two nights. Literally, since Amsterdam was cool and rainy at the moment. As we sipped coffee with our Belgian host and her girlfriend, Jessica was on the phone with Nic arranging the details of our rendezvous in Amsterdam that afternoon. Or at least, she was trying to.

Our host's girlfriend's dog, a chihuahua whose name we've sadly forgotten, would not stop yapping throughout the entire conversation. She was wearing a shock collar that gave her a little zap whenever she barked, but it didn't seem to discourage her from making her voice heard.

Our host's lab Louis, meanwhile, was happily occupied with rolling around quietly on the floor. Jessica mentioned that Nic's girlfriend has a labrador-chihuahua mix. Without saying a word, they looked from the 70-pound lab to the 5-pound chihuahua. Then back to the lab, and back again to the chihuahua, their faces steadily adopting a dubious cast. "They had help," Jessica clarified. 

The ride to Amsterdam was smooth and unremarkable, with an easy change in Antwerp. Along the way, we laughed to find that we were passing through a town named Sint-Niklaas, the Belgian name for Saint Nick. Appropriate, given our upcoming rendezvous.

Antwerp Central was really impressive, and it became even more so as we descended further and further and further down until we reached the lowest level where the bullet trains ran. Thanks to the station's open design, we could still gaze up at the main floor far above us.

It was raining hard in Amsterdam when we arrived. Nic had been waiting for us at the station, but it took us an unusually long time to find each other. Still, it was a happy reunion.

We took the metro back to our hotel in the Bijlmer neighborhood of southern Amsterdam, right across the tracks from the stadium where we'd be seeing the soccer game---a friendly match between the Dutch and Peruvian national teams. But even though they weren't playing for stakes, the excitement was still palpable amidst the throngs of orange and red clad fans filling the streets in anticipation of the match still hours away.

After dropping off our bags and relaxing in the hotel room for a bit, we took in the drizzly ambiance of the area and settled on an Italian place for dinner.

Finally, it was time to enter the Arena.

We had great seats near one of the goals, and the game itself was spectacular. The fans were great, too. Perhaps it helped that it was just a friendly match, but it was cool to see people showing off their national pride in a positive, lighthearted way.

Our seats ended up being right in front of a rogue Dutch pep band filled with trumpets and drums. Thankfully, they handed out earplugs to everyone in front of them. They were fun, but they were also loud and annoying. They might have been less annoying if they had played in tune.

With friendly games I tend to wonder how hard the teams will actually play, but both sides really brought their A game. Peru was more consistent and coordinated, earning the first goal. But while the Dutch missed a lot of big opportunities, they took so many more shots that they ended up winning 2-1.

After the game, the Dutch team honored their captain Wesley Sneijder, who was retiring from the national team after this game. They set up a little family room scene in the middle of the field–complete with couch, coffee table, potted plants, and a big screen TV. With Sneijder and his family sitting on the couch, they played them a farewell video. Even though we couldn’t understand the video or Sneijder’s own goodbye speech to the fans, it was clearly heartfelt and sincere.

Back at the hotel, we got our stuff ready for an early morning checkout. We had timed tickets to visit the Van Gogh Museum in the morning, and we weren't about to miss it.

There is increasing evidence that New York City and New York state are turning a corner in their efforts to fight back COVID-19, and the timing suggests that the shifts may be a result of social distancing measures.

Whether the state and city have merely flattened the curve to a plateau or actually begin to turn it around is somewhat ambiguous. In his daily press conferences, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has described recent data on hospitalizations as good news and emphasized that the curve has become quite flat. On Tuesday, for the first time, New York reported a net decline in hospitalizations, although it remains to be seen whether the trend can be sustained.. The number of people reported as dying from COVID-19 has also been at a plateau in recent days.

But data on the share of New Yorkers who are testing positive for COVID-19 suggests that the curve has not merely flattened but probably begun to turn down. Among tests conducted Monday, April 13 (and reported on Tuesday afternoon), 34.5 percent were positive, down from a peak of 50.4 percent on Tuesday, March 31. The decline in the share of positive tests has been fairly robust across most parts of New York state, including in all five New York City’s five boroughs, although some more clearly so than others.

Still, if the decline has been steady, it has so far been slow. That may imply that while current social distancing measures are enough to gradually decrease the number of new cases in New York, the number of new cases may continue to simmer at relatively high levels for several weeks or longer — and that they could increase again if these measures are relaxed.

All the numbers in this article come from publicly available data from the New York State Department of Health. (There’s also a downloadable version.) The state has been releasing detailed reports on the number of positive and negative tests conducted each day in each county in the state, including in the boroughs of New York City (which are each their own counties).

Information on the overall number of tests — both positive and negative — is critical, because without it, apparent changes in the number of cases can reflect changes in testing volume rather than the actual incidence of disease in the population. In tests conducted on Sunday and disclosed on the state’s website on Monday, for example, 6,337 New Yorkers were found to have COVID-19, the lowest number of new cases since March 24 and a seemingly huge decline from the 10,575 new cases found on Thursday. (The number ticked up again a bit in tests conducted on Monday, to 7,177.) However, perhaps because of Easter, only 16,756 tests were conducted on Sunday, the lowest number since March 31. (By comparison, 26,336 tests were done on Thursday.) There are many such fluctuations in the data:

Evaluating the share of tests that turned up positive can paint a clearer picture. The rate of positive tests was climbing statewide through March 31 but has been falling slowly since then.1

It turns out that this Sunday was a pretty good day for New York. The share of tests returning positive results on Sunday was relatively low (37.8 percent) — in fact, the lowest in almost three weeks up to that point (since March 25), although Monday’s figure was lower still. It just wasn’t quite as good a day as the raw numbers imply because of the relative lack of testing.

Adjusting for testing volume doesn’t answer every question. It could be that New York’s criteria for getting tests are becoming more liberal, or more conservative, which could affect positive test rates. These tests are hardly coming from a random sample of the population, in other words.

The still-high rate of positive tests among those who are being tested suggests that there are probably a very large number of undiagnosed cases in New York (as there are in other places). It may even be that literally millions of people in New York City have or had COVID-19. Testing of pregnant women at one NYC hospital late last month and early this month, as reported in a letter to the New England Journal of Medicine, found that around 14 percent of asymptomatic women had COVID-19, and that was at an earlier point in the epidemic than the one we find ourselves in now.

Still, across most of the scenarios that I described in my earlier article on testing, the share of people who tested positive was a more accurate reflection of the shape of the epidemic curve than the raw number of positive tests was without adjusting for testing volume. (Feel free to download our Excel sheet and explore your own assumptions.)

Furthermore, changes in the share of positive tests in New York state are not merely a reflection of where in New York those tests are being conducted. Since upstate New York has a lower rate of positive tests than New York City, for example, doing more tests upstate but fewer in New York City could artificially depress the statewide positive test rate. That is not what’s happening here, however. Instead, if we break New York into three parts, we find a decline in the rate of positive tests in each one.

In New York City — applying a trend line to smooth out slight fluctuations from day to day — the share of positive tests has declined from a peak of around 57 percent on March 30 to around 42 percent now. In five suburban counties that are part of the New York City metro area — Suffolk and Nassau Counties on Long Island, and Westchester, Rockland and Putnam Counties in the Hudson Valley — positives have fallen from a peak of around 50 percent on April 1 to 38 percent now. And in the rest of the state — which I’m referring to as upstate New York, though the definition of “upstate” is controversial — positives peaked at around 22 percent on April 2 and have now fallen to about 17 percent.

These communities haven’t followed exactly the same curves. The suburbs were home to some initial, very bad outbreaks. However, the city then had steeper, sharper growth and a higher but slightly earlier peak than the suburbs.

In upstate New York, the rate of positive tests was never as high as it was in the city or the suburbs, but it also hasn’t declined as much.

The five New York City boroughs have also had different trajectories. Queens had the highest peak, but has since seen the steepest decline. Manhattan had a lower rate of positive tests than the other boroughs, although that could reflect the fact that residents of Manhattan are wealthier

and could find ways to get tested even with limited symptoms.

Staten Island has followed a slightly worrying path, with the rate of positive tests having declined somewhat from their peak, but then leveling off rather than continuing to decline as sharply as in the other four boroughs and in the suburbs. Staten Island is home to many essential service workers such as police and firefighters who are testing positive for COVID-19 at high rates.

But overall, the news is positive in New York. It’s also a sign of the importance of social distancing — which means that the rates of new cases could increase again if measures are relaxed.

If the peak in the rate of positive tests came on or around March 31, it’s likely that the peak in actual infections came sooner than that — probably two or perhaps even three weeks sooner, given the lag between when people get infected and when they become symptomatic, and how long it takes for symptomatic people to get tested and for their tests to show up in the data. That would mean it came in mid-March, a time when New York City was — belatedly, according to some public health officials — closing schools, along with bars, restaurants and other businesses,

The governor’s statewide stay-at-home order, meanwhile, didn’t formally begin until the evening of March 22, which could be reflected in the slightly later peaks outside of New York City.

The decline in the rate of positive tests has not been especially steep, however — at least not until the past two days, when it was sharper. If taken at face value, it would imply that the effective reproduction number (sometimes called R), or how many additional infections are produced by each infected person, is below 1, but perhaps only slightly below 1. When that number is above 1, the number of new infections will continue to increase, while if it’s below 1, the number of new infections will decrease. But if the reproduction number is close to 1 — say, 1.1 or 0.9 — the increases or decreases will be gradual, with a long, relatively flat plateau rather than a sharp peak.

We don’t know for sure yet whether New York is going to follow that course. In Italy, the decline in the rate of positive tests was initially fairly modest, producing a plateau for a week or two, before later picking up steam.

Warmer weather could also help, although the evidence for this is mixed. There is also a lot of uncertainty about how many people in New York ultimately have or had the coronavirus. If many people had it — as implied by the New England Journal of Medicine letter — then herd immunity could potentially play some role in lowering R, though likely not enough to reduce it below 1 on its own until a large share of the population has become immune.

It’s perhaps more likely, though, that New York has been beating COVID-19 by a relatively thin margin so far, and therefore it doesn’t have a lot of margin for error. That’s a lot better than the alternative case where the city and state were losing the fight and the number of hospitalized patients continued to rise at their earlier rates. But it also means that city, state and regional leaders will have to be smart about reopening the economy and relaxing social distancing measures.

The modern Lincoln front end premiered on the Continental sedan, but the design was first unveiled at a consumer clinic where potential customers were shown several new proposals for a facelift of the mid-size MKX sport/utility.

Consumers liked it, this new nose, and so now the MKX finally gets it along with a real name. It’s the 2019 Lincoln Nautilus.

Although it comes with two new engines both combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission, a retuned chassis, and an upgraded interior featuring a comfortable 22-way power seat option, the Nautilus carries forth the MKX’s CD4 (Ford Edge) platform and its sheetmetal from the A-pillar back. The new sheetmetal forward of the A-pillar makes for much more cohesive styling, next to the MKX.

The new nose is just a few millimeters longer than the old one, thanks to ditching the canted-back 1941 Continental-style split-wing grille, though its upright rectangular replacement makes the Nautilus look much longer than the MKX, and more distinct from the somewhat dowdy Ford Edge, which also benefits from a mid-cycle update for model year ‘19. Enhancement of Ford-Lincoln delineation is important, because the Edge Titanium, with a base price of $39,545 and the EcoBoost V-6 ST, at $43,350, encroach on lower-trim Nautilus territory.

Your humble servant also reported on the first drive of the ’14 MKX, also in Santa Barbara, and found that Lincoln’s chassis tweaks of the Edge’s chassis did wonders to make it a credible premium highway cruiser. Lincoln engineers retuned the ’19 SUV’s front and rear suspensions, with larger rear bushings, softer tuning and new, cushier Continental tires on wheels of up to 21 inches.

The ’19 Lincoln Nautilus is rather nautical in its highway dynamics, but that’s a good thing. “Nautical” in this case does not mean it wallows while canyon carving. It’s a soft and well-controlled ride, which is what the segment needs.

Nevertheless, the Nautilus comes with dynamic chassis control; “normal,” “comfort” and “sport” when the eight-speed automatic is placed in Drive, and “normal” and “sport” when shifted into Sport. The S-mode holds gears longer, for more aggressive acceleration, and it locks out eighth gear and the stop/start system. Switching between these various modes requires digging through digital pages on the instrument panel menu, so probably only Lincoln engineers and auto journalists will use them.

A Lincoln engineer told me he likes the “comfort” mode for Metro Detroit’s war-zone-like roads, and “sport” for twisty mountain roads like the ones just outside Santa Barbara, but the only difference I could detect was in the steering, with sharper turn-in under “sport.”

The front seats are fabulous, especially the Black Label trim my drive partner and I first sampled. (Our Black Label color and trim combo was “Gala”—the others are “Thoroughbred,” and “Chalet.”) The optional Ultra Comfort 22-way power seats, with lumbar control and a massage feature are far more comfortable, and more premium in look and feel than anything from Cadillac.

On the driver’s side, the SUV sits a bit tall for my taste, probably to assure sufficient forward view over that long, un-sloped hood. But there’s not a lot of extra headroom with the seat in its lowest position even for a sub-six-foot driver like me.

Most of the Nautiluses—Nautili?—in Lincoln’s test fleet here were equipped with the optional 335-hp 2.7-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6, same engine as in the Ford F-150, even though the company forecasts 70 percent of buyers, more or less, will choose the 250-hp 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbo I-4. Lincoln offers either engine up and down the Nautilus line, from the base and Select to the Reserve and Black Label. Any trim level, with either engine, is available with front- or all-wheel-drive. Lincoln says the AWD take rate has been about 55 percent for MKX, and that won’t change much.

The 2.0 EcoBoost is perfectly adequate for the 4,305-pound SUV (all examples in the fleet had AWD), and probably the better choice for everyday fuel efficiency and road trip range, but the engine sounds thrashy. Full-throttle acceleration can get the engine winding out a bit and holding a gear too long after lifting, which makes the eight-speed automatic wind out like a CVT.

The EcoBoost V-6 better suits the Nautilus’ premium aspirations, with a throatier sound and good power for accelerating up steep hills. The third who choose this engine will be the same sort of customers who take the time to find the dynamic suspension control settings in the IP menu.

Available driver assist systems include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot detection with cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centering technology, evasive steering assist, back-up camera, automatic high-beams, and enhanced active park assist. Happy to say we didn’t use much more than the blind-spot and cross-traffic features, and the lane-centering technology, which seems to aggressively turn in around tight canyon corners. For the most part, this is good, reliable state-of-the-art stuff, though not cutting edge (see Cadillac Super Cruise), that should provide some stress-reduction on long drives.

The top-of-the-line Black Label trim advances experiential luxury, and the notion that time saving is the ultimate indulgence. It adds dedicated showroom personnel, extended premium service and maintenance, car washes any time, annual vehicle detailing, Avis President’s Club membership, and the Culinary Collection, with “access to select restaurants” nationwide. The Lincoln Nautilus Black Label’s base price is $8,020 more than the next-highest trim level, Reserve, which raises the question of whether a.) all that experiential luxury is worth it, and b.) Lincoln can sell in the high atmosphere of the German luxury brands.

That seems a bit optimistic, though with its new, much-improved look, quiet and compliant ride and comfy seats, the $45,540 Lincoln Nautilus Select and $49,870 Reserve are legitimate competitors for similar SUVs from Acura, Cadillac, Infiniti, and even Lexus.

Nevertheless, the Nautilus comes with dynamic chassis control; “normal,” “comfort” and “sport” when the eight-speed automatic is placed in Drive, and “normal” and “sport” when shifted into Sport. The S-mode holds gears longer, for more aggressive acceleration, and it locks out eighth gear and the stop/start system. Switching between these various modes requires digging through digital pages on the instrument panel menu, so probably only Lincoln engineers and auto journalists will use them.

A Lincoln engineer told me he likes the “comfort” mode for Metro Detroit’s war-zone-like roads, and “sport” for twisty mountain roads like the ones just outside Santa Barbara, but the only difference I could detect was in the steering, with sharper turn-in under “sport.”

The front seats are fabulous, especially the Black Label trim my drive partner and I first sampled. (Our Black Label color and trim combo was “Gala”—the others are “Thoroughbred,” and “Chalet.”) The optional Ultra Comfort 22-way power seats, with lumbar control and a massage feature are far more comfortable, and more premium in look and feel than anything from Cadillac.

On the driver’s side, the SUV sits a bit tall for my taste, probably to assure sufficient forward view over that long, un-sloped hood. But there’s not a lot of extra headroom with the seat in its lowest position even for a sub-six-foot driver like me.

Most of the Nautiluses—Nautili?—in Lincoln’s test fleet here were equipped with the optional 335-hp 2.7-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6, same engine as in the Ford F-150, even though the company forecasts 70 percent of buyers, more or less, will choose the 250-hp 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbo I-4. Lincoln offers either engine up and down the Nautilus line, from the base and Select to the Reserve and Black Label. Any trim level, with either engine, is available with front- or all-wheel-drive. Lincoln says the AWD take rate has been about 55 percent for MKX, and that won’t change much.

The 2.0 EcoBoost is perfectly adequate for the 4,305-pound SUV (all examples in the fleet had AWD), and probably the better choice for everyday fuel efficiency and road trip range, but the engine sounds thrashy. Full-throttle acceleration can get the engine winding out a bit and holding a gear too long after lifting, which makes the eight-speed automatic wind out like a CVT.

The EcoBoost V-6 better suits the Nautilus’ premium aspirations, with a throatier sound and good power for accelerating up steep hills. The third who choose this engine will be the same sort of customers who take the time to find the dynamic suspension control settings in the IP menu.

Available driver assist systems include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot detection with cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centering technology, evasive steering assist, back-up camera, automatic high-beams, and enhanced active park assist. Happy to say we didn’t use much more than the blind-spot and cross-traffic features, and the lane-centering technology, which seems to aggressively turn in around tight canyon corners. For the most part, this is good, reliable state-of-the-art stuff, though not cutting edge (see Cadillac Super Cruise), that should provide some stress-reduction on long drives.

The top-of-the-line Black Label trim advances experiential luxury, and the notion that time saving is the ultimate indulgence. It adds dedicated showroom personnel, extended premium service and maintenance, car washes any time, annual vehicle detailing, Avis President’s Club membership, and the Culinary Collection, with “access to select restaurants” nationwide. The Lincoln Nautilus Black Label’s base price is $8,020 more than the next-highest trim level, Reserve, which raises the question of whether a.) all that experiential luxury is worth it, and b.) Lincoln can sell in the high atmosphere of the German luxury brands.

That seems a bit optimistic, though with its new, much-improved look, quiet and compliant ride and comfy seats, the $45,540 Lincoln Nautilus Select and $49,870 Reserve are legitimate competitors for similar SUVs from Acura, Cadillac, Infiniti, and even Lexus.

your hard times are the best thing that can happen to you and here is why

everyone wants to be part of our good times. everyone — good, bad and ugly. but because the good times are so sunny, it can be hard to know who is who, and what is what — i.e. who is the good, bad and ugly? and that can be a problem — because it is during our cloudy days/hard times that we most want or need the right people by our side.

for example, before I came out of the closet with my healing practice, I was in a (yet another) hardest time of my life. I had no money for my phone bill, I ate bread for week clips at a time, and I exhausted myself walking around different neighborhoods dropping my resume and photo off at every residence begging for work. I felt shameful and humiliated that a privileged person like me was in that position. this went on, on and off, for about 2 years. clearly, the Universe wanted me doing one thing and one thing only. and that is a long, true, and fact-driven reality with an amusing array of documents of supporting evidence that some people find hard to believe. anyhow, I was at yet another rock bottom. another low. I remember thinking “I am being forced so low so that when I rebound, I can tell my story and it will help others”. even in the lowly lows of my then-state, I knew I was going to come out of it. I just didn’t know how or when. it was for sure, an initiation. but it was super hard times. and if there is one thing I have learned about hard times in my life, it is that the people who are NOT supposed to be in your life will reveal themselves loud and clear — during hard times. this is a great thing. here is why.

the first great thing about having hard times is that you then see who you are carrying around — the dead weight — during the sunny days of your life. the sunny days of your life are important, because those are the refueling days. those are the days in which your plants grow and things blossom and bloom and you gather enough energy to make it through (imminent — let’s face it!) hard times. but if we are carrying around dead weight during the sunny days (and we don’t realize it), we have less reserve for the cloudy and stormy days (when the cockroaches scatter anyhow).

when shit hit the fan for me years back, almost every single person in my life who was supposed to support or love me not only abandoned me, but actually went in for the kill. by “went in for the kill”, I mean they saw their opportunity to crush me while I was down. at the time I did not understand it, and now I do. it’s what weak people do (either consciously OR unconsciously) when they see an opportunity to draw blood/energy that they want, can’t get and won’t ever have. I already wrote about this in my eBooklet 1. for example, a “best friend” told me on one of my lowest days of all time that I was a horrible friend because I wouldn’t make time to visit her out of state (I couldn’t even afford to take the metro, mind you). and to boot while she knew exactly of my dire logistical, emotional and spiritual situation and sat back with her million dollar bank account, never once offered to help. she wasn’t the only one, but she was definitely the meanest and most selfish. one of the ones who “went in for the kill”. meanwhile, I had a brand new friend. her name is Jennifer Santaniello and she is credited with taking my photos on much of this blog. Jennifer is someone who I actually met via my healing practice around 2011 when I “came out”, right in the midst of said hardest time. this brand new friend, without even knowing me for more than a day, and someone who came to ME for help, surprised me during my hard time not only with covering my phone bill etc but sending groceries to my house. we are friends to this day and she never once asked me for anything. she has seen my practice and life sky-rocket to where they are now, and I hold her dear to my heart because she not only always believed in me, but she supported me when it was super cloudy out. she was there rain or shine. my value was still the same to her. it was during that one particular hard time that I got to see what true friendship (and, frankly, love) looks like. Jennifer helped show me the duality of friendship and love that was in my life during that time, and never once did she turn around and make it conditional (which can often be the case when someone “offers” us something — a lesson which I later learned two final hard times). it wasn’t even her monetary offering, but rather her emotional support that I needed more than anything in the world. emotional support can change EVERYTHING for us. then there were others who either sat idly by during the above time, simultaneously shaming me to the point of hysterical tears over the phone as I literally entered New York City Housing Court, or turning their heads as if I should have my shit together. I’m actually understating the “went in for the kill” details on the latter others because quite frankly they are a bit too negative for this post. but you get the point.

there have been countless other good times, and countless other bad times in my life before then and since then. and in each case, it is revealed specifically, who is true and who is dead weight. for example, everyone wants to be part of a rising public career when the person is loved. but what about when the trolls and haters say otherwise? or, what about when a person is not completely public or “important” or “adored” yet, so the dead weights wait on the sidelines for that person’s “big moment” so that they can jump aboard their big float down 5th Avenue ONLY right when their sails are nice and windy? yeah. there are plenty of those. like preying mantises. and they have also revealed themselves to me already. one of the fears I recently got over was the fear of major press. as I’ve stated before, I’ve said no to a lot of things because they did not feel totally aligned with my message or timing. that was me being real, and having personal integrity. but, I have still opened myself a smidge in the past to press, and I will continue to do so at this time. during one of my “yes” moments to press, I was attacked by someone I had never met as well as by their troll following. and there was my dead weight moment of reveal of those around me: many knew of the attack and supported me anyway, posting my sunny/cloudy moment, regardless of any other opinion. those are the people who would stand on the frontlines for me because they know who I am and what I represent, even in the face of millions opposing me. but not all. and the ones who hide, or retract their support in this type of scenario, will always be fair-weathered as fuck. to EVERYONE. they have no allegiance, not even to themselves. those are the ones to watch. those are the dead weights. the ones who will glorify you to your face on the sunniest days and then stab you in your back on the cloudy ones. but the point is this: they reveal during cloudy or not sunny times.

it is during our hard times that we learn who is worth putting in the effort for during our sunniest days, so that we might then maximize our soul and Universal potential. because there will ALWAYS be cloudy days, and we can’t afford anything less than our sunniest days to help buffer the cloudy days. perhaps if we are young, we truly have not had any cloudy days (we might think we have — but just wait!). but any successful life or business will have the cloudiest days imaginable. it is during these times that we meet ourselves, and those around us, for better or for worse. our hard times are the absolute best times to hunker through and understand exactly where our energy is going — because it will shine again, and what we carry with us when the sun is shining will make all of the difference.

your hard times are the best thing that can happen to you, if you are willing to look at the entire situation and the people around it. if you are currently in a hard time and you think that any support is better than no support, perhaps think again; often when we cut a cord of “negative support” (i.e. those who “stick it out with us” during hard times, but who are really just reinforcing over and over the clouds and storms because they are addicted to punishing, controlling or dramatizing themselves), we open up the space for positive support to meet us for the first time. positive support will not only change your cloudy days, but help foster your sunny days in a way you perhaps have never seen.
