This is a good thing My family and home life. It’s still my favourite place to be. Football in all its gross financial injustices, still remains a truly entertaining, all welcoming spectacle – a break from our  realities. I spent a lot of my days obsessed with the beautiful game. My own team Tottenham’s reimagining as a team for the neutral under Ange Postecoglou. I’ve had a serious post-covid hangover about going out; crowds and especially going to concerts. But still this year I managed to catch a few shows. John Cale and Knife Girl at the Helsinki Festival was very special. Elvis Costello at Kulttuuritalo was a great way to spend an evening – I didn’t really want it to end (and this was also a rare date with my partner!) Emma Ruth Rundle, Sorry, Jake Xerxes Fussell were good festival experiences. I’m an eternal optimist with dreams that we can all get along, people can be who they wanna be and somehow humanity pulls together to save the planet. My dream state staves off the dark feelings that are increasingly hard to ignore.
This is a low The Israel demolition of Palestine in response to Hamas atrocities is a key world happening which will resonate for decades to come. British Conservatives and all right wing ideologues who – in collusion with the mainstream media – spend most of their time demonising refugees and the trans community. The public discussion around minorities in Finland is base and inhumane. This right-wing Finnish government has been a hard dose of reality that has sprung many of us out of our comfort zones. The casual racism of the Finnish government has normalised terminology that should offend everyone. Disgraceful. The lack of a moral compass or compassion in world politics – who exactly are the good guys? I hope someone could point out who’s looking out for us all nowadays? Elon Musk and the destabilising of Twitter. He just couldn’t leave it alone could he? The unstoppable rise of AI. It’s a slow process (or maybe a fast one) that results in the death of a certain kind of creativity. Hearing that some people in the Music business are using AI to write press releases is a little sad. The Saudi exploitation of football.  It doesn’t stop. How long till the whole of football is owned by Saudi Arabia? The Vinyl market  becoming an expensive artefact for the wealthy. In typical Music Industry fashion, the vinyl format becomes revitalised only for the music industry to make the price prohibitive for most people. Own goals are rarely clearer.
Future To be a better me.
Happy holidays x

'Cillian Murphy is riding high on the success of Oppenheimer but before he gathered praise for portraying the titular scientist in Christopher Nolan’s WWII thriller, he was celebrated by fans for playing the Tommy Shelby, the World War I vet turned into leader of Peaky Blinders. The period crime drama created by Steven Knight had a successful six-season run and went out on a high note in 2022, but its impact on fans and pop culture lives on.
Funko is celebrating the fan-favorite show with a new line of Peaky Blinder Pops! The collection offers a figure of all the gangs’ senior members and other notable characters, taking on the likeness of their respective actors. The line includes two variations for Tommy along with figures for Arthur Shelby (Paul Anderson), John Shelby (Joe Cole), Ada Thorne (Sophie Rundle), Alfie Solomons (Tom Hardy), Michael Gray (Finn Cole), and Polly (late Helen McCrory). All the Pop! figures are available to pre-order and will arrive next month.
The Legacy of Peaky Blinders
Set in Birmingham in the post-WWI era, Peaky Blinders follows the exploits of the criminal gang, which is loosely based on a real youth gang of the same name who were active in the city between the 1880s to the 1910s. The unparalleled success of the show left an impression not only on pop culture but fans and critics alike. Throughout its run, the show won numerous awards for its direction, story, performances and production design, and also propelled Murphy to global fame. A proposed spin-off movie has been in the talks but there is currently no confirmation or production update. Both Murphy and creator Knight have shown interest in continuing the story of the Shelby family.
Along with the aforementioned cast the series also cast Annabelle Wallis as Grace Shelby, Iddo Goldberg as Freddie Thorne, Ned Dennehy as Charlie Strong, Natasha O'Keeffe as Lizzie Shelby along with Sam Neill, Charlotte Riley, Paddy Considine, Adrien Brody, Aidan Gillen, Anya Taylor-Joy, Sam Claflin, Amber Anderson, James Frecheville, and Stephen Graham across the six seasons.
All seasons of Peaky Blinders are available on Netflix...'

Freddie’s tribute rocks the world
ROCK fans throughout the world were gripped last night by a haunting tribute to Queen singer Freddie Mercury.
International stars gathered at Wembley Stadium for a musical extravaganza in memory of AIDS victim Freddie that was beamed worldwide to [Cont. on Page 3]
[Photo caption: Starring role: Liz Taylor at last night’s concert]
Freddie’s Champions
[From Page One] millions of television viewers.
Performers including Elton John, George Michael, David Bowie and Annie Lennox thrilled the 72,000 crowd at the concert.
And Elizabeth Taylor, in her capacity as president of the American Foundation for AIDS Research, delivered a message on the need to raise world consciousness about the disease.
In one of the most unexpected gestures of the evening, David Bowle interrupted the music to kneel at the side of the stage and recite the Lord's Prayer.
Hands clasped across his microphone, he bowed his head and told the capacity crowd: "This tribute is for our great friend Freddie Mercury.
"I would also like us to remember our friends […] who have been depleted by this dreadful disease.”
Highlight
Then, as the crowd hushed, Bowie started to pray. It came as a complete contrast following a set in which he duetted with Annie Lennox of the Eurythmics.
Bowie also sang a solo number, Heroes, before making way on stage for George Michael and then Elton John, who launched into a stirring version of the Queen classic, Bohemian Rhapsody.
The evening's highlight came when Lisa Minnelli sang We Are The Champions with the crowd joining in, arms raised In the air.
A firework display rounded off the sort of over-the-top evening that Queen's flamboyant lead singer would have felt delighted to have been part of.
Earlier, the three surviving members of the super-group — Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon came on stage to thunderous applause.
There was a heavy police presence at the event but the crowd, enjoying the Monday sunshine, was in a good-humoured party mood.
The show was seen by a billion people in more than 70 countries, either live or within 24 hours.
All profits are going to help AIDS projects worldwide.
Western Daily Press TV critic Chris Rundle writes: The cream of British rock played its heart out in memory of one of its greatest names last night — to reinforce its safe sex message to the world.
While 72,000 fans went wild in Wembley stadium a billion TV viewers were drawn into the frenzy and emotion of the biggest show of its kind since Bob Geldof's first Live Aid event.
But there was no mis[…] concert. The safe sex gospel was proclaimed by everyone from Joan Collins downwards.
The challenge in televising such an event was daunting in technical terms. There is, despite almost unlimited resources and any number of roving cameras, a limit to the ways a live rock performance — especially one this long — can be broadcast without fatigue affecting both the imagination of the director and the mind of the viewer.

Nature Interpretation through Art - The Gift of Beauty
“The Gift of Beauty: Interpretation should instill in people the ability, and the desire, to sense the beauty in their surroundings – to provide spiritual uplift and to encourage resource preservation” – A direct quote from Beck et al. (2018).
When reading through the content from this unit and the textbook, I couldn’t help but think “stop and smell the roses”. To me this means taking time to appreciate the beauty.
Appreciating the gift of beauty means taking the time to be present in nature and finding a meaning through the beauty of your surroundings. Moving out west to Vancouver Island these past two summers has not only allowed me to fully immerse myself into nature, through my job as an avian education and the wonderful landscape surrounding me, but also through the time it gave me to enjoy it. I don’t know about you but “summertime” to me usually meant busy days working and the evenings playing sports or with friends. In the past I never had time to go out into nature to learn and interpret the world around me. Moving out west, and living in a new place I have never been before, gave me a lot of time. Time that I was able to spend outside, experiencing nature to the fullest. I think that interpreting nature through art harmonizes with this idea of time. In order to interpret nature through art and all its beauty, you must devote time into doing so and being present.
Art is also an amazing way to interpret the nature around you without as much of a time commitment. Back when I was growing up in my family home my mother hung a painting above our piano of Mount Rundle – one of the spectacular mountains you can see in Banff, Alberta. It was her “favourite mountain” she told me. She grew up out west, so she had visited Banff many times. I however was very young at the time and had only flown out west to visit my grandparents in BC; I had never been to Banff – yet! I remember driving through Canada on my way to Vancouver Island, making sure I stopped at all the good spots. Mount Rundle and the town of Banff was of course on the list. I will never forget when I first saw the mountain. I knew instantly which one it was, no one had to tell me. I had seen it a thousand times above my piano. The beauty encapsulated within this small painting was almost as beautiful as the grand mountain itself. I will say that the inspiring feeling I got when looking at that painting, was the same on I experienced starring up at the white peaks in person. What I have learned from this experience is how much the beauty of nature can be interpreted through art and how nature can draw you right back to the art and all its elements.
Now I tried to get a photo of the original painting in my house, but I wasn’t able to get it in time. I then searched for a bit on google to see if I could find it. Crazy to me that after all these years and a couple scrolls down google, I still knew immediately which one it was.
Here’s the painting by Michael Horyn:
Tumblr media
And my photo of Mt. Rundle (a little bit of a different angle!):
Tumblr media
I hope you enjoyed this art and nature comparison!

REVIEW: A Hilarious and Heart-Felt Look at Family Dynamics at Dundas Little Theatre's GRAND HORIZONS
Tumblr media
It’s out with the old and in with the new at Dundas Little Theatre with the company’s selection for their January production. A modern day set (an extremely clever design by Graham Clements and crew) filled with boxes, knick-knacks and a homey, lived in feel greets an eager matinee audience as we discover the joys and pathos of every day life as partners, parents and, quite simply, human beings in Bess Wohl’s Tony-nominated comedy Grand Horizons.
Over a quiet dinner for two, performed with a cheeky choreographed ballet underscore, Bill (an energetic, engaging performance from Michael Hannigan) and Nancy (portrayed by the captivating Ruth Flynn) matter-of-factly decide to divorce after fifty years of marriage. While Nancy feels liberated and Bill seems unfazed, their adult sons Brian and Ben (equally strong performances from Jared Lenover and Bryan Fotheringham respectively) do not take the news well. As the “kids” descend on the Grand Horizons senior living community to mediate the situation, everything they thought they knew about their parents is hilariously demystified.
The entire cast excels in their roles and have been carefully directed by Ryan Trepanier and David Faulkner-Rundle. Both of these directors have deep insight into family dynamics because even at the play’s most emotionally uncomfortable parts, we care for this family and hopefully, find it within us as an audience to understand and relate to their anger, denial and eventually, acceptance. The play is staged well with brief moments of stagnation still feeling purposeful. There is a scene where you could legitimately cut the tension with the butter knife that Nancy holds. You feel a sense of emotional claustrophobia even in such a large physical space. It is very impressive directing from both. It must also be mentioned that the crew deserves high praise during intermission with a complete set changeover done within minutes. It is fascinating to watch should you choose to do so!
The cast itself is delightful to watch with very few hiccups. Each character is faced with less than ideal truths about themselves and their partners (or lack thereof). Michael Hannigan and Ruth Flynn embody this realistic couple going through the motions of a marriage that is less about being in love and more being beholden to one another. They are incredible together; both extremely earnest and captivating throughout.
Jared Lenover (Brian) and Bryan Fotheringham (Ben) command the stage as the sons. Their character’s personalities are vastly different which creates great tension between them. One is deeply focused on the anxieties that come with taking care of everyone while the other faces the insecurities of not being taken care of enough. They run a gauntlet of emotions throughout and their energy never wavers. It is truly impressive work as actors to embody unlikable characters that you still feel empathy for. No easy feat.
Newcomer Katie Ribout is exasperated perfection as Jess, the wife and expectant mother of Ben’s child. She is the mediator, the outsider looking in and this is a character we need to wake this family up regarding their actions. This is especially shown in the second act where her feisty frustration of wanting to be more than a pet name and soon-to-be mom shines brightest.
Tumblr media
Rounding out the cast are Michael Adebo as Tommy; a seductive but no nonsense hookup with some great harsh truths about relationships and Bev Mattson as a quirky and free-spirited Carla who gained some of the loudest laughs of the afternoon.
Equal parts laugh out loud funny and deeply heart-felt, this production of Grand Horizons and its commentary on marriage, family, and accepting that change is often painful but necessary, is theatre at its most enjoyable and familiar. Don’t miss it.
