HISTORY

Born in Phoenix, Arizona, Gabriel Castillo was supposed to be the solution to his parents' troubles; a partnership that had bred more from convenience and familial pressure than actual love. To no real shock, he was not the magic marital fix they had been looking for, but they had another child just to be sure.

Bound by some kind of unspoken duty to the family they had created, Luis and Amalia Castillo held it together as well as they could for the sake of the children. Amalia, a primary school teacher was the heart of the family while Luis, a labourer was the enforcer.

Early life for Gabriel wasn't a dream but it wasn't altogether terrible until the company his father worked for went under and he was made redundant. Work at the time was hard to come by and the dynamic shift of being the man of the house to relying on his wife to support them was difficult for Luis, and he found himself out more often at night, stumbling home late from bars, reeking of alcohol and cigarettes. Amalia remained stoic, putting up with more than any person should, turning a blind eye to his antics until one night she'd had enough and confronted him about his behaviour. In a drunken stupor, Luis struck her across the cheek in front of Gabriel. That was enough for her to pack her and the children up, leaving for anywhere that was far from him.

They came to settle in Hidehill; Amalia drawn to its small-town charm and sense of community. She got a part-time position as a substitute teacher at the primary school and Gabe was enrolled as a freshman at Hide High. Knowing that a single part-time wage wouldn't be enough to sustain them, he got an after school job as well as working at Ormond's on the weekends. He took it upon himself to assume the role of man of the house, and did his best to help provide for his Mom and sister.

Shortly after Gabriel turned 18, his father tried to reconnect with him for the first time to tell him he'd gotten sober, found work again and wanted to repair their relationship. Still holding onto to a lifetime's worth of boyhood resentment and chip still firmly placed on his shoulder, Gabe ignored him. Luis tried more times to make contact for a few years, but it wasn't until he informed his son that he had terminal cancer did Gabe take notice. Gabe was in the middle of a six-month intensive firefighting training course at the time, and his father passed away before he had a chance to schedule a time to (reluctantly) go and see him. He was notified a short time later that Luis had elected him to divide up the estate as next-of-kin. He was freshly 21 with the world at his fingertips, instead he used the money to buy his mother a house in Hove Lake; where she'd often expressed she'd love to retire to one day.

Shortly after he became a fully qualified firefighter, Gabriel was asked to transfer to a branch in Minnesota. At the insistence of his Mom he agreed to go, and spent six years there; returning every Christmas and birthday without fail. When Amalia became sick, he requested a transfer back to Hidehill and moved into the Hove Lake house to take care of her until she died three years ago.

Gabriel has always been naturally physically fit and was a gifted athlete in high school. In his senior year he was offered a sporting scholarship to go to a college out of state but he turned it down to stay with his family. Plus, he had no desire to go to college and study.

Gabriel is a vehement family man and has always wanted a family of his own, but it has just never worked out for him.

While he tries to stay measured as much as possible, Gabe has a very short fuse and has been known to engage in a fist fight or two.

HISTORY:

It had been said many times in his life that Darren was simply born under a bad sign. When he was born his parents were ecstatic. He was the child that they had always hoped and prayed for. After all, his parents had been trying for a child for five years before Darren was born and there he was, their miracle baby. But quickly the excitement of finally having the child they had always wanted faded. By the time their son had hit first grade it became apparent to them that something was amiss. By then their second child had been born and Darren quickly showed that he hadn’t developed the same emotional range that other children his age had. Solemn and somewhat cold their son had a problem connecting with other people and often had little reaction to anything sad or violent that would happen around him.

That only worsened as Darren got older. Puberty and his first shift only seemed to make him colder and those around him soon realized that any friendly or polite interaction with him was an act. His parents sought professional help assuming that they could fix whatever was wrong with their child. But there would be no fixing Darren. Something inside of him was skewed and if he felt the normal range of emotions? They were buried deep beneath the surface, so deep that even he didn’t seem to have access to it.

Throughout high school his so-called friendships were superficial at best, connections simply used to put his parent’s minds at ease and to appear normal to those around him. But Darren always knew that when push came to shove none of the people he spent his time with mattered much to him at all. Not his supposed friends, not his family- no one. He knew that it wasn’t normal not to care about others at all but it was normal for him. And soon after graduation he left New Orleans and cut off all contact with the people there.

For over a decade following his departure Darren travelled the world, never sticking in one place too long. And for the better part of that time he paid his way working as a mercenary, taking on whatever job was offered to him and completing them without hesitation. His inability to connect to others made that life easy- there was no guilt, no remorse and no one to worry about leaving behind. On the rare occasions that he would return to New Orleans? His parents had learned not to ask about his life and how things were going. In truth? Darren was sure that his parents were afraid of the answers they would get were they to ask.

A year ago Darren had gotten word that his father had passed away and he was asked to return to New Orleans. Despite the unease she had felt where her son was concerned his mother wanted him back home. And Darren eventually relented, moving back to his hometown for good and quickly rising up the ranks of his pack mostly because of his strength and ability to get things done rather than his personality.

In the year since his return Darren has done a rather good job of faking connections to others like he always had. Some people can see the real him beneath he mask but most are blissfully unaware of what he’s really like. He has yet to find a job, living off of the money he made while travelling but that suits him just fine. He’s all too aware that he may not be suited for a normal job anyway.

BEFORE THE PARTY;

Diego Cruz. He held the honor of being plenty of firsts in his family. He was the first Cruz born in the United States. The first member of his family to bring home a college degree. The first member in his family to run for political office. In fact... he was the first latino to place a bid in the Rosewood mayoral race ever, so Diego Cruz was no stranger to the pressure of having to succeed. At this point, it was second nature to him. He’d already brought pride and recognition to the Cruz name, just like he’d do for the other side of the tracks. He would be the proof that their neighborhood wasn’t some breeding ground for scum and thugs, as they probably thought. 

It was the home of talented and intelligent people. People, who despite the hardships they faced on a daily basis have persevered. Just like the rest of their neighborhood could if they were given the resources. That was the one of the biggest driving point in his campaign, the other side of the tracks could be as great as the rest of Rosewood if they as a town addressed the problems rather than trying to eliminate them.  

Because if they didn’t, their town would sure divulge into madness. As it was already occurring on the other side of the track. Opposition to the new up and coming SoWood neighborhood was growing rapidly and understandably so. The project was already displacing numerous families and costing jobs for many of the people he represented. These were people who already lived under the poverty line, they needed these jobs to survive. So the protests against this wave of gentrification became increasingly destructive and dangerous. Bricks were being thrown into storefronts, SoWood billboards were being defaced and the fire department was putting out fires nightly. The increase in destruction has prompted the Rosewood police department to enforce a curfew to attempt to control the chaos. But Diego knew that it would be useless, as you could not control the Greasers. 

The Greasers were the law on the other side of the tracks. A gang whose presence was felt at corner of the other side of the tracks. Children would often say they wanted to be a Greaser when they grew up before any other profession, their influence was that strong. Diego, himself had his fair share of experiences with the gang. Back in high school, he found himself with a decision to make. Follow his childhood friends and join the Greasers, they would have the numbers to keep them safe at Rosewood Academy — it’s student body notorious for hating people from their neighborhood, or venture into richie territory unprotected. But it would be his father that would make the decision for him, removing Diego from that equation. He had bravely stood up to a group of Greasers, letting them know they had no business with his son. He wasn’t alone, he had a family that would put him through Rosewood Academy.

That they had, his parents had been there for him the entirety of his high school career. They supported him at every single one of football game — although he knew his mother didn’t understand the sport at all. She would much rather help him study with those difficult finals. They would often  embarrass him by forcing him to take a thousand pictures with his dates before every dance, as if they didn’t already have enough. His parents made sure that their son made something of himself outside of the confines of their neighborhood, that he would matter to both sides of Rosewood. His parents support continued well into college, where he graduated summa cum laude from Ravenwood University. Their hard work had given him the inspiration to run for office. They were the image he wanted to present for the other side of the tracks, no one represented home more than them.

Unfortunately, they wouldn’t get to see him that come to fruition. 

Both of his parents passed away, the result of a car crash that left his youngest brother Perrie, the sole survivor. Their passing having put the bond that the Cruz boys shared to the test. They had always been a tight knit family. That wasn’t to say that they didn’t have their problems but the brothers had  cared about one another, despite their obvious differences. But the death of his parents had tested the bonds between the remain three Cruz’s. Diego couldn’t stand the sight of Scott Cruz, the one closest in age to him. Scott having been the troublemaker of the three brothers. He cut school, he brought drugs into the home and worse yet, he was the one who’d gotten himself involved with the Greasers. It got so bad that the middle Cruz had found himself kicked out of the home, Diego having never agreed with that decision. It only drove his brother closer to the Greasers not now, he wanted to make his presence felt. Where was he those nights where his mother paced around the living room, wanting nothing more than to find him?  

His youngest brother Perrie became increasingly irritable and volatile following the accident. He began to act up at school, skipping classes and getting into fights. These were things that Perrie had never done before. The youngest Cruz having been a model student, his writing was going to open the doors for him whatever Ivy League institution that he choose. Now, Diego would only hear from Rosewood Academy to let him know that Perrie was behind another disturbance. He’d tried his best to understand where this shift in his behavior was coming from, but Diego found himself being pushed to his breaking point. He already had the pressures of the upcoming election on his mind, and he had also lost his parents. He had to bury his biggest support system and then forced to assume the position of the head of his household. All without a moment to process what was happening around him. 

So, of course the moment came where he snapped. 

Perrie had been missing for a majority of the day. He hadn’t shown up to any of his classes nor was he picking up his phone. This having happened the day that he was finally leading in the polls, this was not the moment for Perrie to do something that could make him seem like a neglectful guardian. He paced across his living room, this anger growing in his body. He had doing his best given the situation they found themselves in and yet, Perrie continued to disobey and disrespect him. The roar of motorcycles filled their streets, prompting Diego to look outside to find Perrie getting off the back of a motorcycle. The motorcycle of ‘Two Bit’ Malando, a well known Greaser. Diego saw red in that moment, the Greasers. That’s who he was turning to now? Diego escorted him into the house, not before standing up to Two Bit. This wasn’t one of the moments for his smart ass comments. 

When inside of the home, Diego demanded a reason for why Perrie was spiraling the way he was. He wanted nothing more than to put a stop to this. Things only escalated from there, insults being thrown between the two brothers until Diego's fist connected with Perrie’s face. The moment it made contact with his face, he felt horrible. The youngest Cruz had followed that up by letting him know that he hated him. He fucking hated him, were his words exactly as he ran out of their home. Diego attempted to chase after him but in that moment, he simply wanted to break down. But he couldn’t, too many people were relying on him. He had an entire community who needed him to win. 

And in that moment, he knew exactly what he would have to do. He would have to promise Rosewood that the Greasers would be no more. For too long, he’d ignored the truth. The gang held back his community from prospering, so they would have to be dismantled. It was the only way that the more affluent Rosewood's would vote for him come election day. It was the way he was going to free his brother from the grip that the Greasers hand on him. 

The Greasers would have to go. 

DURING THE PARTY;

Diego had ran into the hospital in search of the emergency room, barely remembering the directions he’d just been given. His mind had already having gone to the worse possible place. That evening had been preparing himself for an upcoming debate against Mr. Mumford, one of them would be the next Mayor of Rosewood. As he looked over the list of potential questions, he had received the call from his childhood friend, Damon Winston. The two weren’t particularly close at the moment, their opinions on the Greasers having formed a wedge between the two men.

But he had a great amount of respect for the man. He had taken Perrie in following their argument, in fact he still was. But under one condition, he was only allowing Perrie to remain in his household if he shaped up. Like Diego, he only wanted better for his little brother. He just somehow managed to convey that in a better way that he had. To Damon’s credit, Perrie seemed to have been getting better. He wasn’t receiving nearly as many calls from the Rosewood faculty as he had before. 

But tonight’s phone call was one that’d brought him back to that night.   

All he'd managed to hear was Perrie was in the hospital and stabbing. Diego had frozen soon after. He couldn’t to lose his younger brother as well. He refused to bury yet another member of his family.

He found the waiting room, it was packed with Greasers. None of that mattered as he’d found Perrie. He was holding an ice pack to his eye. He was pretty banged up, but he was alive. Next to him, Scott. Who had not seen in quite some time, that being his own doing. The three brothers looked at one another, almost as if they expected yet another argument to break out between the three of them. Being the oldest, Diego decided to set the tone. Without saying a word, he simply sat down besides his two younger brothers. He didn’t judge, he didn’t criticize. 

He simply sat down, because for the first time in a very long time — all three were back together again.
