revisiting a lost fate @ the songwriting workshop! 

he was never the person who would openly talk about his struggles. in fact, if anything, choi yeonjun was the opposite. during the summer of graduation, he felt unmotivated to do anything music related. it wasn’t like he didn’t want to do it. but every time he did, he felt as if he was stuck. he never really understood writer’s block until the one time he found himself so frustrated at himself for not doing what he loved most. since then, his midipad had been collecting dust, he never clicked on his DAW program, and his song book remained untouched. even to this day, he doesn’t think to think of a project of his own. 

at least… until now. 

as he walks into the workshop, he couldn’t help but feel… nervous. sure, he was looking forward to this workshop all day, but the fact that he was actually here was kind of hard to grasp. not only was he a fan of convex, but to be in a workshop with the jinwook. it was kind of surreal, if he had to be honest. he had to make sure that this was real life and not just him dreaming it. 

it wasn’t only that, but after abandoning what he’s loved for so long. even if it was two years ago, it still felt like a long time to yeonjun. him getting back into it now after those years? he wasn’t sure if he’d feel the spark again. but he signed up to this class for a reason, so he just had to hope that it’d help somehow. 

he writes down new terms he’s never heard of before in the book (which was… a few words, considering he’s known most of this since high school) and listens to the idol’s experience with songwriting. it felt… refreshing, to say the least, hearing him talk about his experience of songwriting from when he was younger ‘til he became known as convex’s jinwook. and with he nods his head when he hears jinwook talk about how songwriting was a form of emotional expression. and after listening to pinwheel, a song that made yeonjun feel a little melancholic, it helped strengthen his overall point. 

after the entire class came up with a concept and melody, he’s grouped with some stranger,  some who he vaguely recognizes (not like he’d remember where, though), to come up with more lyrics and a chorus section. “i can play the keyboard, if you want,” he offers with a smile. when the rest of the group gives an okay, he grins until they return to their main task at hand: the most challenging part for choi yeonjun. 

he looks at the team and gives them a small smile. “ah, maybe we can go with the chorus since it might be the easier part to write for?” he asks with a smile. “it’s not as long as verses and it serves as a pretty important part to write for, since everyone will remember it and all.” he was never shy about public speaking, but he was always hesitant when it came to offering ideas to the table. when they agree with his idea, he watches as someone takes out a piece of paper and a pen to write the lyrics on and he wants to verbally thank them, since he wouldn’t be able to do that himself (poor handwriting and all). but he keeps that to himself. 

after a few minutes of discussion and yeonjun pitching in as much as he could (he’d like to say he pitched in a lot. maybe not as much as some people in the group), they were finally done with their lyrics. taking the paper and the notes, he walks over to a free keyboard with the rest of the group following behind him. when he plays the notes and sings the lines written on the song, they all look at each other with a smile. this was it! this was their song. a song yeonjun helped to make. 

when asked to reflect on the experience, yeonjun decides to be the first person to speak up. though he was confident to say what he needed to say, he never did speak out in class. at least, not recently. “it was really fun to work together and collaborate on ideas,” he starts off. “ah, but the best part was… realizing that i contributed to something that i’d want to listen to over and over again until i get sick of it.” and he feels confident in his answer. in fact, if he could, he would say more. but this wasn’t the time to get all sappy about how he felt something after abandoning a former pastime of his that he once thought would be his future. 

after everyone (including yeonjun’s group) performed their little masterpiece, the class was over. but yeonjun wasn’t going to leave just yet. he takes his phone out of his pocket and walks up to jinwook, internally telling himself to calm down as he approaches his… teacher? teacher. 

“hi! uh, so..” he laughs nervously. “um. i’m a really big fan of you! you’re really cool… can i take a picture with you? … and can you sign my phone? if you want to, of course. i’d be fine with just a picture.”
