Spotting Basil (Semi-Porn Romatic Drama Comic)

Finally starting to get off my VN streak with something closer to conventional. I want to talk about a comic that's sort of pornographic that I really grew to enjoy for more than sexual pleasure. It's a very dramatic story that tackles a lot of important themes in a nuanced way.

Spotting Basil by MikroGoat is a comic about an anxious pig, Basil, trying to lose weight while falling in love with his personal trainer, Abe. But it's also about something much deeper than that. It's two people with species-specific biological traits that makes it hard for them to live normal lives trying to see if they can find happiness, unsure as to whether or not they need to defy or work with their biology to achieve that. It's also about their struggles to love the other while giving each other room to figure these things out wondering what they should or shouldn't do to help the other. There's a lot to think about with this comic.

Like any smartly written furry comic, it creates in-universe issues that could be analogous to real-world issues while making sure not to draw overt connections that can muddy the metaphor. It takes the Beastars approach, where the central conflict simultaneously stands in for many different issues while still trying to tackle it in a way that makes sense for the characters and the setting.

I think a big thing that speaks to me is that even though the story is a Nature vs Nurture debate, it doesn't try to definitively answer it. Abe has a near insatiable sexual appetite, but one that leaves him feeling like sex is like urinating. He just does it because he feels like it and even though so many partners tell him they're okay with him being open, they eventually realize it isn't temporary and just leave him. Abe really feels a strong connection to Basil and wants a relationship, but is scared he won't be able to handle his promiscuity. By contrast, Basil is similarly resentful of his pig biology making him naturally fat, but instead tries to defy it by trying to lose weight. Even when people say they're okay with his weight, his anxiety makes him believe they're just lying to spare his feelings. In both ways, they mirror each other, struggling to figure out how to be happy while never being able to fully trust those they build relationships with to be honest with them.

Compared to the last comic I covered, it's a short read. Around 225-229 pages depending on if you include the side comic Sprouting Basil. So you could probably read through it all in one night. It is only halfway finished, but it's certainly a great read for what it is in its current state. If you like your gay porn to make you think, Spotting Basil will be perfect for you.
