I grew up lined up behind the bootlickers,

Graced the grass that was evergreen on the other side,

Found out plastic made up its true nature.

I breathed comfort as it was force-fed to us,

A mixture of the American Dream & terrorist propaganda.

I kicked rocks to school, down the line of cars,

Thoroughly scanned by the MPs.

Clean shaved faces and buzz cut scalps,

Gingerly adorned by the AK-47s draped around their hearts.

I spoke English in Spanish class,

And recited our history every season;

Columbus discovered us,

There was nothing before u.s.,

The U.S. saved us,

There was nothing before u.s.

I was told the pledge of allegiance belonged to our existence,

It detailed the very nation that kept us living. 

Around 5th grade,

I felt uneasy.

Why do my cousins speak of our nation as if they’ve never heard of the American Revolution? 

Why do they say, in the same breath, they’ve never heard of a smart-board?

Why does their English sound so foreign and my Spanish sound so forced?

Why is mi papi, mi papi, every other weekend

But

This star-spangled banner that makes no sense to me, 

an everyday occurrence?

Why do I have to stand and pledge allegiance to a nation I’ve never known?

I’ve only known the warmth of my tropical sun,

And the uncertainty of my unbirthed Borinqueña.

Why must I stand in the pledge of allegiance?

I wasn’t asked where my allegiance stood.

At that age, I probably didn’t know.

But I knew it wasn’t with the MPs, 

Or the AK-47s

Or the force-fed green pastures.

It stood on every uncovered jeep ride, 

A la casa de mi Abuela.

Every hymn perfectly recited,

By el canto del coqui.

It stood on that seesaw in front of Abuela Myriam’s house.

That baby taste of freedom that never felt too sweet.

I knew freedom lived in every choice my family made for me.

In those that stayed in our archipelago,

And those that chose to leave.

I knew I had to choose for myself someday.

And that day is today.

And that choice is quite certain,

That, ese canto del coqui,

Rings louder than any allegiance I’m forced to pledge. 

Because a nation is bred by its people;

Never its colonizers.

In honor of the #MonthoftheMilitaryChild we wore purple today for #PurpleUp Day at school! Ava even helped decorate the purple fence at her school. We are so grateful to live in a military proud community! The support the girls and I have here has been so wonderful from the military counselors at school to organizations like @bluestarfamilies and @theuso hosting spouse and family events and activites.
