A Common Unfortunate Theme in 2020.

It seems that the majority of us are truly lost, feel alone in our worries and can’t figure out how to climb out of this societal hole.

Once Covid-19 really hit the U.S. things started to shift rapidly. I joined the unemployed masses fairly quickly. I’ll admit I had mixed feelings about it. 

When I got the word I would be laid off I was worried, stressed and freaking out that I would no longer have a job -- living in the Bay area is expensive AF. I panicked. On the other hand, I no longer was in a job I immensely disliked and I avoided having to quit (I hadn’t figured out what job I DID want and therefore couldn’t bring myself to quit) since they took care of laying me off. Ha. Ha. Ha.

I have been waaaay unmotivated for the past 3 months now. The world is going through a pandemic. Nobody seems to be on the same page about safety measures. Donald Trump is a moronic president (nothing new here), seriously The Worst Leader to have been stuck with during this shit. I have no job nor prospects of one because I haven’t been looking nor is there real hiring happening right now anyway. And to top it off -- as things are starting to open back up (which I personally feel is a bad idea although I kind of understand the business logic -- total societal capitalist mentality behind that one) I realize I was already remarkably lost prior to this shizznit going down.

So in an attempt to finally, after 3 months, start to be productive (I signed up for a 2 month coding class, I lost motivation for it a quarter of the way through, so I consider that a failed attempt) I have begun researching “I have a bachelor’s degree in business and I don’t know what to do.” 

Unsurprisingly, yet surprisingly there is a whole section of the population that feels... the EXACT. SAME. WAY. Basically, none of us have a concrete, palpable, legitimate solution because this societal hole was passed onto us from past generations and the way our world or maybe just the US (I can’t speak for other countries) thinks about what to prioritize and what makes you successful literally doesn’t make sense for our generation anymore. 

...Also, I want to note that I realize this is such a “first-world” concern because there are obviously always grander worries and literal life-or-death decision-making to be made by many in our planet. 

Anyway, I suppose there’s some baby sense of relief in knowing that one isn’t alone in this struggle. But by the same token.. there’s even more prominent reason to worry. LOL.

“Conservative Exception-ism”

“What does is mean to be a conservative?”

This very question is at the heart of an inner-party war between the “tea-party” and the “establishment”.

While the “tea-party” is accused of being too conservative, the “establishment” is accused of not being conservative enough.

Apparently, we must be “just the right amount” of conservative. If we fall short of these mystical standards, we are labeled RINOs. But what does conservatism even mean nowadays? As we suffer through an embarrassing election cycle, we are forced to consider our own definitions while struggling to reconcile with each other.

Defining “Conservatism”

According to Google, a conservative is “a person who is averse to change and holds to traditional values and attitudes, typically in relation to politics.”

Along those same lines, Merriam-Webster defines a conservative as someone “not liking or accepting changes or new ideas.”

By those definitions, I am not a conservative.

my dad and i got in a classic "debate" of him being convinced that a bachelor's degree = money = happiness and me reminding him this is not 1986, college is not the same, and i have learned more from being on my own and away than i have ever learned in a classroom. he told me to consider another study abroad program and that he will let me fly anywhere i want just to see a place. but i don't want to be gone for just a semester or visiting for a few weeks. that's been what i've done every time i travel, and as much as i love and appreciate that, i want to be able to stay and stay on my own dime. i don't want to use my parents as a financial crutch, i don't want to buy round trip tickets anymore, i don't want the familiarity and safety and easiness because it's preventing me from growing and being a real adult. my mom is proud of what i've been doing and glad i refuse to be a money leeching millennial. my dad thinks i'm going overboard and straying from the structure of college, job, apartment, family. but i've exhausted my passport, i know this town like the back of my hand, i have my goals and plans mapped out and they're not in california. i can understand their concerns that maybe this time i really won't come back "home", but these are my choices. this is MY bucket list. europe and the book and declining scholarships were my choices and i am a significantly happier and wiser person because of things i did outside the structure of life for 18-22 year olds. so i'm not sorry that this time next year, i won't be wearing tanks and shorts driving farmside. i'll be in a raincoat staring at a skyline in my new home. an important lesson for insatiably ambitious young folks is that you will always be your parents' baby, but that doesn't mean you have to always be a baby in general. explain that to them, and even if they're barely budge, leave anyways and call them daily to tell them you're happy and okay. you don't need anyone's permission to pursue your dreams. ✌️✈️🗽 // #blogpost #millennialprobs #smalltownproblems #california #newyork #bucketlist (at Tracy, California)

The Ascent.

Thanks for checking out our site! As you can tell by the name of the blog, I am a member of Generation Y, a.k.a. the Millennials. And in case you haven’t heard, my generation recently ousted the “baby boomers” as the largest voter bloc in America! #represent

Yes, that’s right. This year, political campaigns better shake up their game if they want to win us over. May the odds be ever in your favor.

I am also a Republican. Republican Millennials are more common than many people may think.

Now… If you’ve been paying attention to the shifting political tide, you know that my generation is full of people like me.

We may refer to ourselves as Republicans, conservatives, moderates, or libertarians…

But when we identify as Republicans, we often feel the need to clarify our personal stances on certain issues. Many young conservatives are hesitant to call themselves Republicans because of the negative stereotype Republicans have acquired by their backward stances on social issues.

Contrary to what many liberals will argue… we are not all the spawn of pompous, wealthy, homophobic, bible-thumping, backward traditionalists against birth control.

So yes, we’re fully aware that Republicans have been given a bad rep.

And yes, we know we can’t resurrect Ronald Reagan (unfortunately). But the sooner we accept this reality, the sooner our generation can begin building our own legacy. This is OUR time.
