"But, for at least part of the 1999-2000 TV season, Freaks And Geeks was a beacon to anyone whose high school experience was awkward, boring, humbling, or painful—basically, anything other than the sexy and stylish depictions that had dominated teen-centered movies and shows. It begins with a feint in the pilot episode, one of best series introductions ever. Director Jake Kasdan scans the high school track, seeking out a very blond football player (Gabriel Carpenter, in a role not unlike his appearance in 1999’s Drive Me Crazy) who’s confessing his affection to a very blond cheerleader in the bleachers. This early encounter is the extent to which Freaks And Geeks would engage with the kind of prepossessing teens who were frequently the subjects of these shows. This decision, Feig tells The A.V. Club, was based on having “grown up on such a diet of teen stuff being about beautiful people who were so cool with everything, including sex. It didn’t reflect anything I grew up around. You would see those kids; they were around. But they weren’t my group. They weren’t the majority of the kids that I knew.”

The camera ventures under the bleachers, where Daniel Desario (James Franco) is holding court among the other “freaks,” before panning over to our protagonist, Lindsay Weir (Linda Cardellini), who’s lurking nearby, ever between groups. The camera keeps moving, settling on an altercation between the “geeks”—Lindsay’s brother, Sam (John Francis Daley), and his friends Bill Haverchuck (Martin Starr) and Neal Schweiber (Samm Levine)—and a bully named Alan (The Sandlot’s Chauncey Leopardi). Lindsay comes to their rescue, but inadvertently offends Sam by referencing his diminutive stature. Lindsay is insulted by Alan’s buddies for her trouble, and Sam stalks off. This opening scene is a prime example of the brand of subversion found in Feig’s good-hearted show. A lesser series would have dedicated at least five minutes to Lindsay making up her mind, either in approaching the freaks or standing up for her brother. In Feig’s pilot, Lindsay acts decisively and still gets it wrong, which is not how this is supposed to go—that is, not on network television, and certainly not on the powerhouse network that was NBC in the late ’90s.

That was far from the last time Freaks And Geeks would defy expectations. In the same episode, we learn Lindsay is in the midst of an existential crisis brought on by her grandmother’s death. Hearing from her grandmother, the kindest and best person Lindsay had ever known, that there was nothing waiting on the “other side” leaves her questioning everything. So the former mathlete goes looking for answers in unlikely places, including under the bleachers and on the “smoking patio” with the freaks. Lindsay bonds with the freaks, especially Kim Kelly (Busy Philipps), whose depths were just as filled with teen-girl fury as insecurity. She even manages to win over the caustic Ken Miller (Seth Rogen). But her behavior flummoxes her parents, Harold (Joe Flaherty) and Jean (Becky Ann Baker), and to a lesser extent, her brother. Lindsay’s quest, which unfolded over the course of the season, was probably just as baffling for NBC executives (and possibly viewers). She wasn’t mollified by a new relationship with sweet stoner Nick Andopolis (Jason Segel), nor did she quickly learn her lesson and return to her high-achieving best friend Millie’s (Sarah Hagan) side. The absence of easy answers became a defining element of Lindsay’s life, as well as of the show.

But Freaks And Geeks was always just as optimistic as it was realistic, which is a key part of its enduring appeal. It’s a show about survival, about how a found community can help you muddle through anything. Despite the labels, Feig’s characters are all basically good people—failing that, they’re people who are capable of doing better."

🔴 Berzé-le-Châtel, un castrum du Xème siècle en Bourgogne

Constitué d’un donjon primitif en bois et d’une chapelle carolingienne en pierre, le castrum de Berzé est attesté dans un cartulaire de Cluny datant de l’année 991, en faisant la plus ancienne baronnie du Mâconnais.

Intégré au réseau de défense de l’abbaye de Cluny dès le Xème siècle, le château prend une importance considérable au XIIIème siècle. En 1229, le sire Hugues de Berzé bénéficie d’un prêt de l’abbaye lui permettant de transformer le château en place forte. Berzé devient ainsi en l’espace de quelques années la plus grande forteresse militaire de Bourgogne du Sud, principal château de défense de l’abbaye. Cluny est alors à son apogée et accueille près de mille moines à l’année.

Au cours de la guerre de Cent ans, le château devient un enjeu disputé et convoité entre les Armagnacs et les Bourguignons. Donné aux Bourguignons en 1417, il est pris par les Armagnacs en 1420 lors de leur attaque du Mâconnais. Après quatre ans d’occupation, il est finalement repris par Philippe le Bon grâce à la présence d’un tunnel souterrain reliant le château à une tour de garde située sur une colline voisine. En 1471, il est à nouveau la cible d’une attaque royale, celle de Louis XI, cette fois infructueuse.

Durant la renaissance, le rôle militaire de la forteresse devient plus secondaire, cette dernière se trouvant pourtant au cœur du conflit déchirant alors le royaume : la guerre des ligues. Catholiques et protestants s’affrontent à travers des escarmouches mettant le pays à feu et à sang. Le duc de Nevers à la tête de la ligue catholique porte un assaut considérable en 1591. Forte de 1100 hommes, 100 chevaux et d’une série de canons portatifs, l’armée du duc vient à bout des défenses de la forteresse qui cède après deux mois de siège.

Après l’attaque de la ligue et l’expulsion de ses propriétaires, le château est laissé à l’abandon pendant près de deux siècles. Lieu de pâturage pour le bétail durant la révolution française, il est malgré quelques dégradations relativement épargné par les vagues de destructions révolutionnaires. Déclaré tout comme l’abbaye de Cluny bien national, il entre dans la propriété de l’Etat mais n’est pas réinvesti. Le château subit alors les affres du temps…

En 1817, les descendants des anciens propriétaires rachètent le château, celui-ci redevenant alors un bien privé. Ayant subi de nombreuses dégradations de par son inoccupation prolongée, le château nécessite alors de nombreuses restaurations : charpentes, toitures et planchers doivent être rénovés afin d’assurer la sécurité du lieu. La famille Thy de Milly agrandit peu à peu les fenêtres, rénove le logis seigneurial et entretient les jardins, permettant bien des années plus tard de l’ouvrir au public afin de partager et donner à voir ce monument remarquable du patrimoine.

if he’s part of the bridal party, i guess whoever gets to dress millie and her party that day will free us from philippe, lately they’ve been dressing her really well so i’ll welcome that change for once. you should know that i usually love to criticise philippe for how he dresses noah but i think noah looked really good here. i can see him wearing a suit like this, it fits the occasion.

now let’s pair that fit with how good his hair has been looking lately.

Here's some Templars whose research distracted me very well from the happenings in Paris and the fact I'm ordering food via phone to go out as little as possible. Okay. Here's what I found:

Transcript of the first and second page:

André de Montbard was born on November 5th 1097. All we know is that he had richt even noble parents and that he was the fifth Grand Master and founder of the Templars.

Bertrand de Blanchefort was the sixth Grand Master and was born sometime in 1109. He fostered the Templars as guardians of travelling Christians rather than brutes despite their weaponry. For three years he was a prisoner of was and went on one single expedition, declining a second.

Philip of Nablus, also: of Milly actually a Jerusalem-born man in 1120. Wasn't too fond of being Grand Master yet submitted to Almaric pressuring him. He became seventh Grand Master and resigned in 1171.

Ode de St. Amand was the eigth Grand Master born in 1110. He was captured by Saladin in the battle of Morj Ayyun, to the dismay of his fellows since he was described as a headstrong guy, leading in both praise and resentment and being a valuable member.

Arnold of Torroja born in wherever and whenever, he was the ninth Grand Master at the ripe age of 70. He worked on Hispaniola in the Reconquista. His capability in negotiating even with Saladin made him an important GM, so important that his tomb was only discovered in 2018, very well hidden from others.

Gerard de Rideford hid his birth year but died in 1189. Used to be the 10th Grand Master of the Templars. He used king Henry II's money to bring more troops to Jerusalme. Apparently he was pretty beloved, as Saladin offered his life for a peaceful surrender, which succeeded and he was released to Tortosa.

Robert de Sablé was born a lord of Sablé in 1150. Not only was he the eleventh Grand Master but also member of the Valiant Order. Helped Henry Hunior revolt against his daddy Henry II and also convinced Islamic troops to retreat in the third crusade.

Gilbert Erail (or Horal) born whenever, died in 1200. He was the twelfth Grand Master and aspired to wage peace, not war, in between Christians and Muslims.

Philippe de Plessis castle-forn or rather fortress-born in France in 1165. Was the thirteenth Grand Master of the Templars and had semi-good relationships to the Hospitallers (kinda like the Templars but evangelican Maltesers). Suggested a peace treaty with Malek Adhel.

Pedro de Montagut (or Montaigu) died in 1232 while still being a Grand Master and ways a friend of Guillaume de Chartes, whoever that was. Made a deal with the Muslims: they gave up Jerusalem while the Templars stopped the siege of Damietta. Most importantly he got a piece of the True cross, I wonder if that's still somewhere?

Armand de Lavaie he was born in 1178 in Calabria and elected Grand Master. Death is really unclear, some say he died in battle, others say he survived capture. In 1239 he arrived in Acre for a treaty with a sultan.

Richard de Bures is somewhat of a ghost since all we know is he died in May 1247 and was the seventeenth Grand Master.

Guillaume de Sonnac a noble-born Frenchman whose birth date is unclear. Took part in the successful 7th crusade. He worked as a chronicler for the Templars, lots of information we know on them cites him as source. He replaces Périgord while this guy was captured, and his death was the end of the 17th crusade.

Renaud de Vichiers was the 19th Grand Master of the Templars and the preceptor of Saint Jean-d'Acre. He was having issues with Hugues de Joug and had to throw him out of the order to stop their fight. Lois IX of France was a supporter and financer of Renaud, but he again fought with him and parted int he end over a diplomatic mission. He retired in a monastery, and if not alone, he argues to this day.

Thomas Bérard wrote letters of misery to king Lois despite being twentieth Grand Master and somewhat respectable. He initiated a cooperation with the Hospitaliers Teutons and yielded the last island's fortification in June. Asking the Pope for help he waged the 8th crusade which became the last since Lois died. His most significant win: a 10-year-truce for Muslims and Christians.

Thibaud Gaudin another man with rich parents boen in 1229 was the 22nd Grand Master of the Knights Templars. Demanding people from Cyprus for a siege in Sidon wasn't successful since the reinforcements never came, so he left the Holy Land in ashes.

That's Jaques de Molay, the 23rd and last of the Knights Templar's Grand Masters. I found a painting depicting him and it showed me how Templars looked like, from an ancient point of view, not one in Hollywood. Templars were called Knights Templars and would own and wear a normal knight's armour during the day. Above that, they had a white cloak with a black Christian cross on it, and a leather belt in which they could carry their swords in.

Molay lead the order from the 20th April of 1292 until Pope Clement V was having none of it and dissolved the order in 1312. After the fall of Acre the Catholics retreated to Cyprus, the headquater of Jerusalem. Episode 3 Recap: Talk to the Hand

We are back! For episode 3. Or 4? Who's counting? We are, I guess.

In this episode, Millie waxes poetic about her love of Rick Rubin's book The Creative Act. His book straight-up offers practical tips for creatives to tap into thee "source" and overcome emotional blockers in order to create. We discuss our plans to participate in a spooky event - at the Church Street School for Music and Art - in October. We'll interview peeps about their favorite scary movies, what frightens them, and maybe craft a scary story on the spot! Stay tuned for that fun little bonus ep.

Hey, what's up with the SAG-AFTRA strike? It's still going on so we'll continue to adhere to the mandate - don't watch non-compliant movies! We'll do our best.

We also dig in further on our wild speculation about local crimes possibly involving a serial killer aka the Newton Creek Killer. We theorize it could be the work of a serial killer, possibly a female who targets intoxicated men. Rina goes in on The Pope's Exorcist, a Jules Avery joint, with fan fave Russel Crowe. Russel Crowe's character is an exorcist and gets assigned the case of a possessed young boy in Spain. The Pope sends RC, aka Father Lankford, to perform the exorcism. This movie is too silly, with gratuitous nudity and unnecessary sexiness. Also, not scary enough. But as per Rina's recommendation, "Watch it. Don't watch it. Who cares!?" Next we dig into our movie of the ep, Talk to Me by the cutie pie Philippou Bros. An A24 production, this Australian horror movie is about a group of teenagers who use a cursed ceramic hand to commune with spirits. And film it. With their phones.

The main character Mia immediately gets in too deep after contacting her deceased mother. Things go awry (you gotta follow the rules!) and her young friend Riley gets possessed. Riley's possession leads to a traumatic event (very, ew) and hospitalization.

Mia becomes obsessed with the hand and uses, but it starts warping her grip on reality. SPOILER ALERT: In the end, the hand's influence leads Mia to sacrifice herself for Riley. She throws herself into oncoming traffic.

Hot commentary in this film; phone use is a driving force in the film, with people filming everything and sharing everything on social, even the private moments of others. The pacing of this movie was a bit off but all in all a spooky, thoughtful romp. 4 1/2 Corns. That's good.
