Sonic the Hedgehog. One of the greatest and most attractive characters ever thought up. He can run at sound speed, take out enemies in a flash, and best of all, he's blue colored and knows how to handle the females. Speaking of females, the Sonic universe might also be classified as "Hot Chick Heaven" because there's such a mess of very beautiful and tough women that it will make you love the franchise even more! And since Valentine's Day is around the corner, I've been inspired to make a top 10 list of the most beautiful female Sonic characters. Grab yourself a snack and a glass of orange juice, and try not to reach through the screen because HERE WE GO!
10: Try this question on for size. Who chases and hugs Sonic all the time and wields a powerful hammer? Why it's Amy Rose of course! Though more of a cutie than a hottie, you can't deny the fact that she's still attractive. Two things that make her attractive are the fact that she wears a dress, and when have you ever seen 3 big, very smooth arcs of hair sticking out of a person's forehead? I haven't! So once again, Amy Rose is lovely; that is until she goes berserk and starts hitting stuff with her hammer.
Who's at number 9? It's this alien plant girl from a distant planet. Cosmo, from Sonic X. She arrived on the character's planet to deliver a message saying that the galaxy was under attack by a force called the Metarex. She doesn't do much except tell people to stop fighting and focus on the real matter at hand. The real reason she lands at the #9 is that she becomes Miles "Tails" Prower's sweetheart, something Tails needed for a long while.
Numero Ocho. Cream the Rabbit's mother, Vanilla. She's attractive and the size of an average human mother. What really surprises me about her is that the leader of Team Chaotix, Vector the Crocodile, falls in love with her. Kinda silly, don't you think? She's another character that doesn't do much, but in a season 3 episode of Sonic X, she helps Chris Thorndyke get into space to fight the Metarex along with Sonic and friends.
What number's next? Seven, of course. Wave the Swallow from Sonic Riders. People always root for the good guys, but sometimes, the bad guys steal the show. Her mechanical IQ is equal to Tails. She also happens to be the smartest member of the Babylon Rogues. I wonder why she isn't the leader. Like Jet the Hawk and Storm the Albatross, her specialty is riding the air-boards called "Extreme Gear". With two very long and smooth feathers extending from her head to her calves and droopy eyes, Wave will rock your socks. If only we could see her take wing.
Numero Six. Tikal the Echidna from Sonic Adventure 1. Named after an ancient Mayan city of the same name, Tikal is the daughter of Chief Pachacamac. She's yet another character that hardly does a thing except beg her father to stop being so greedy. She also traps herself inside the Master Emerald so that the water god Chaos doesn't reign terror upon the land. When you're the daughter of a person in the highest power, you need to look your best and Tikal delivers perfectly. That's why she's #6.
Number #1, #2, #3, #4, #5! Ah-Ah-Ahhh! Mina Mongoose from the Sonic Archie comics. How could you go wrong with a girl that looks like this? She can run nearly as fast as Sonic and she went from being a Freedom Fighter to being a popstar singer. Next to Princess Sally she looks more humanoid than the other characters. Who could top someone who has long (some French word I don't know) hair?
This female standing at number 4: Blaze the Cat. One word: Pyrokinesis. How would you like to have that superpower? I mean Blaze could play around in the Himalayas for hours and she would be perfectly fine! Also, 45 degree ponytail makes her look like a Native American. I really like the fact that her love interest is the telekinetic hedgehog Silver. The combination of mind-moving and fire superpowers make these two a reliable couple. But what really lands Blaze in the #4 spot is that her attitudes apparently more different from the other females.
Next up is #3. What's better than having a female with cascading quills? How about a female with cascading quills and hair? Julie-Su the Echidna, another Archie comic exclusive has that feature. She's smart, knows exactly what to do as a freedom fighter, and even trained Amy once. She's also the girl of Knuckles' dreams. Heh, lucky him. Her older self in the series Mobius: X Years Later is just downright hot! Just look at that long ponytail! Now we're talkin'!
1, 2, button my shoe! Princess Sally Acorn. There's a lot to say about this character. She's the heir to the throne, Sonic's first official romance, the only character that used to not wear clothes, brave and athletic, the most humanoid character, and is like a mother to Tails. In the TV show, Sonic SatAM, one Freedom Fighter, the cowardly Antoine constantly tries to woo Sally, but doesn't succeed because... he's a coward! The Princess is also a semi-perfect example of an excellent love interest, although there were a couple of times when she really snapped and acted like a lunatic; in the comics, that is. But overall, Sally Acorn really stands out amongst the slew of females not just because she's Sonic's first official love interest, or because she's the only one who didn't wear clothes, but because in the comics, she grew very long hair, and married Sonic in the future, becoming the Queen.
So, you've seen a pyrokinetic Cat, a swallow, two gorgeous echidnas, and even a princess! Who could possibly top those kinds of females? Well, get ready folks; this is the #1 hottest Sonic the Hedgehog female character. Rouge the Bat. If anybody denies it, how dare you? This woman can fly, she's as strong as Knuckles, and is a femme fatale, seducing other characters into getting what she wants. Instead of having one love interest, she has two! Knuckles, and Shadow the Hedgehog. Being a treasure thief, she's only interested in one object set; jewels, especially the Chaos Emeralds. There actually have been situations where Rouge's cleavage has been exposed, but it eventually got censored. What a price to pay. I think the best part about this beauty is that she wears three different outfits unlike the other female characters. And who wouldn't want to fly across the landscape via strong as Shawn Johnson, and flirt with any male, anytime, anywhere. These three traits make Rouge the Bat triumph over all of the Sonic the Hedgehog females. My hat goes off to you Sonic Team USA. You oughta be proud.
There ya have it folks. Those were the hottest female chicks in the Sonic universe. I hope you enjoyed it, happy Valentine's Day, and I'll see you later.

Hi! I'm that one person on ao3 who was like. Utterly obsessed w Bury Them Deep, and I was wondering if you have any thoughts you'd like to share on the playing styles of any of the other characters? Especially the women, but really anyone, I just find it really neat
Oh my goddddd, yes yes yes please because I have thought so much about this shit.
Momo: an absolutely incredible goalie positionally. You could put her in textbooks on how to hold yourself. Her pushes are perfection, like she's just floating on the ice. Her glove hand is wonderful too, as is her stick handling and she has great height. But her best asset, and also worst one, is absolutely her mind. When she is calm and confident, she's an analytical God. The problem is with her tendency to overthink. Too many bad goals or even just unlucky ones and she has to be pulled because it's just gonna get rough. It's one thing that she really admires about Mezou because he can just shrug it off.
Urakara: The ballsiest defenseman you have ever seen. She played exclusively with boys for years and you can tell because if she's going to get a penalty, it will be for playing too rough. She has really excellent vision for the game however and plays a long game that even Bakugou has grudgingly admitted is admirable. They've had some scrimmages where she's actually out played him and after the first time, everyone expected him to blow up but he was like 'good game'. She's not the best skater and her speed isn't fantastic but its the hockey iq that keeps her where she's at, knowing when and where to pinch and where the game is going. She also has a pretty gnarly snapshot and a fantastic PP QB.
Mina: Mina is a skating god. Seriously, she will break your ankles and you won't have any idea until she's long gone. She was a figure skater until she got suuuuuper bored by it and talked her way onto a team, only to end up being super good at it. She's a right winger with a nice little wrister and is great on the foreheck but uuuuuuh, backchecking isn't her forte. That being said, she actually isn't terrible on the PK, especially since that means chances at short handed goals and boy do you not want to let her try.
Hagakure: You know those players that you tend to forget about? They don't really do anything especially interesting so when they do score, you're like 'oh! Holy shit! They're on the team!'? Thats Hagakure. Definitely a grinder queen, doing all the little shit that makes everyone on the team *love* her but that makes her seem totally unremarkable unless you're looking for it. A Chris Kunitz type, if that makes any sense. Always the first on the backcheck, has an awesome +/-, fantastic defensive forward, but unremarkable. She's also locker room gold because she WILL break any shitty moods up.
That's all the girls. I could also bring up Shouta and Hizashi.
Shouta: Positionally pretty good, pretty good reflexes though really nothing spectacular. His biggest handicap has always been his height, which is only short for goalies, and his lack of the superhuman athletic ability that most pro hockey players have. The thing that got him as far as he did was his hockey iq and specifically, how he could look at the ice and read plays. The ECHL and even the AHL were rough for him because the play was so much more chaotic but the few times that he got to play in the NHL were incredible. Because he could see it, he could read all of it and it all made sense. His body just couldn't hang.
Hizashi: I based him off of a combo of Beau Bennett and Tyler Seguin. I even gave him Beau's number, 19, and it was partially due to Beau's nickname of Sunshine and me liking how that matched with the meaning of the name 'Hizashi'. I also thought it was pretty apt given Beau's talent and promise but how his body just could not stay healthy enough to do the things that you could tell he wanted to do.
Oboro: He was a pond hockey player and was proud of it, lol. Put him on defense or have him play as a forward, he didn’t really care. He saw pretty early on how the hockey world just kinda sucked and was like 'nah, I'm good'.
If you have any more questions, I can not stress how delighted I would be to answer them.

Yorii's Thoughts on Third Members
Tumblr media
Saburo Yamada
"Ah, the baby brother of the brothers, and the youngest competitor in the D.R.B.! Like Mina and Elliot stated, I'm surprised this guy is only in middle school. I mean, I know he's only a year younger, but his IQ is about the same as my brother's! Plus, he's taller than all three of us, which I've no issue with. Suffice to say, he's pretty cool. ...But he should really do something about his apparent worship for his oldest sibling. It makes him seem a bit like a 'brown-noser'."
Rio Mason Busujima
"Hey, Mr. Army Guy! Unlike his teammates, Samatoki and Jyuto, I don't really bother with him much. For one thing, he's a lot less annoying than them. And that's what makes him so boring! He's always got a stern, stoic look on his face! I have to wonder if anything manages to get him upset! Plus, have you seen the food this guy makes?! Ugh, I'm getting sick just thinking about it. My brother brought some of it home once, and I immediately threw it out! He was upset with me, but I didn't care! I don't want anything that guy makes crowding up our fridge!"
"Speaking of Elliot, he's been spending time with Mr. Army Guy, learning how they treat wounds on animals and such. Ugh, I really don't get him at times..."
Dice Arisugawa
"Ugh, Mr. Gambler. My siblings and I all agree that we don't care for this guy. Mina dislikes him cause she feels he's filching off of other people's work when he's not doing anything. Elliot, he's the 'nice one' out of us, but he doesn't care much for how the guy bets on everything, including dog and horse races, which Elliot feels is demeaning and cruel to animals. Go figure. As for me, the simple fact that he's associated with... well, you all already know who it is I'm referring to, that, in itself, is enough for me to dislike him."
Doppo Kannonzaka
"Sheesh, Mr. Office Worker. Mina got on me for saying this, but... I predict that this is what Elliot will be and look like in the future if he doesn't start to shape up. Hey, I'm sorry, but it's the truth! I mean, this guy lets people walk all over him at work, just like Elliot lets those bullies walk all over him at school. And we've all seen what happens to these two when something pushes them over the edge. They completely transform and go bozonkers! If they were like that all the time, then people wouldn't be so quick to use them. I only hope the both of them realizes that soon."
Rei Ayamado
"...This guy..."
As Yorii begins speaking, he suddenly cuts off as his eyes glaze over. A memory of his time back in the labs, submerged in the tank that was his home filled with water. His eyes are closed, as he shut away off from the world around him. Though his eyes are shut, his ears still work, even confined to the tube he is in. He hears raised voices, prompting him to subtly raise his head and open his eyes a bit so that he can observe what is happening.
He sees a woman in a lab coat with short black hair and green eyes. A woman he is very familiar with. For as long as he known her, she has always had an emotionless expression on her face. But for the first time, she has an angry expression presented. She is yelling at someone in front of her. Casting his eyes over, the clone looks to see a strange man wearing a maroon shirt with a black fur coat and a black brick hat. He has a fearless smirk on his face as the woman continues to yell at him.
With a shrug, the man continues to smirk before he departs the lab, leaving the woman in a state of unapproachable anger and fury. He sees her scattering things off of desks: papers, office supplies, medical equipment, everything in her reach. She breathes heavily, placing her hands on her desk as she continues growling underneath her breath. She soon departs the lab, turning the lights off behind her.
The memory soon ends as Yorii returns to the present, his blonde hair turning pink and his once blue eyes, now red. He looks down at the photo of the conman, and stares at it before tossing it off to the side, not giving anymore comment on it.
Hitoya Amaguni
"And last but certainly the least, we have the old guy who hangs out with Kuko and Jyushi. He's certainly the odd man out for the Nagoya team, don't you think? I mean a guy who's almost twice the age of his teammates hanging out with a couple of 18-year-olds? Kinda weird, don't you think? Most teams have members where the age is in a certain spectrum of each other. But not BAT, apparently!"

Innovative molecular biology technique allows for discovery of novel targets for candidate vaccines against schistosomiasis
Tumblr media
- By Luciana Constantino , Agência FAPESP -
Researchers in Brazil have used an innovative technique in molecular biology to identify targets for candidate vaccines against Schistosoma mansoni, the parasite that causes schistosomiasis.
Considered one of the world’s 17 neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), schistosomiasis affects some 200 million people in 74 countries, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Six million are estimated to be infected in Brazil, mainly in the Northeast region and Minas Gerais state.
The scientists used phage display, the study of protein interactions using bacteriophages, viruses that infect bacteria, to screen 99.6% of 119,747 DNA sequences encoding the proteins known to be expressed across all life-cycle stages of the parasite, achieving comprehensive coverage of its proteome.
The results of the study are reported in an article in NPJ Vaccines, an open-access journal published by the Springer Nature group.
They follow on from those of a previous study that revealed the mechanism whereby the Rhesus macaque Macaca mulatta naturally develops a lasting immune response against schistosomiasis by inhibiting certain of the parasite’s genes so that it cannot multiply in the host organism. This immune response leads to self-cure after first contact with S. mansoni and enables the animal to react faster to a second infection (read more at: agencia.fapesp.br/37688).
“Phage display had never been deployed for this purpose in research on parasitic diseases, which normally involves preselection of a few targets for testing of candidate vaccines. In this study, we screened 12,000 proteins of S. mansoni at the same time to identify which ones were targeted by the macaque’s antibodies, both after initial infection and reinfection and after reinfection and self-cure, a key innovation. Both the technique and the model for the study were innovative,” said Murilo Sena Amaral, a researcher at Butantan Institute’s Laboratory of Cell Cycle.
Amaral is the penultimate author of the article. The last author, as principal investigator for the study, is Sergio Verjovski-Almeida, also a researcher at Butantan Institute and a professor at the University of São Paulo’s Institute of Chemistry (IQ-USP).
Both are supported by FAPESP (15/06366-2 and 20/01917-9), which has also funded scholarships for other researchers in the group (18/18117-5, 19/02305-0 and 16/10046-6), including a PhD scholarship for first author Daisy Woellner Santos.
Methodology
The researchers investigated the immune response of ten macaques infected by S. mansoni during the stages of self-cure and resistance to reinfection using a recently developed technique called peptide library-based phage immunoprecipitation sequencing (PhIP-Seq). They constructed a phage display library that comprised 119,747 DNA sequences encoding 11,641 known proteins from S. mansoni in all stages of its life cycle. The library was incubated with antibodies collected from rhesus macaques in a previous study at different points during the process of self-cure and resistance to reinfection. The aim was to isolate and identify specific targets of the animal’s immune response to the parasite.
Tumblr media
The study involved rhesus macaques, which naturally develop a lasting immune response to the disease (photo: researcher’s archive)
Library screening with antibodies from the early phase of parasite infection identified significantly enriched epitopes of parasite extracellular proteins known to be expressed in the host’s digestive tract, shifting toward intracellular proteins during the late phase of parasite clearance (released owing to its death). Epitope refers to the specific target against which an individual antibody binds. When an antibody binds to a protein, it bonds not to the entire protein but to a segment known as an epitope.
The enriched peptides were analyzed with bioinformatics tools to identify potential candidates for vaccines. The most promising candidates were tested in a pilot vaccination assay, in which mice were immunized with a selected pool of PhIP-Seq-enriched phage-displayed peptides. The result was a significant reduction of worm burden in the immunized mice.
“You often hear the argument that a schistosomiasis vaccine isn’t feasible, but our discoveries have revealed a great deal of the immune response and opened up promising prospects for the development of an effective vaccine. We worked with the 12,000 proteins key to all stages of the parasite’s life cycle and succeeded in identifying the most reactive targets,” Verjovski-Almeida told Agência FAPESP. The technique can be used for other types of parasite, he added.
In an article published in May 2023, the group described their discovery of a way to “separate” male and female parasites so as to prevent reproduction and egg release. Male-female pairing, with the female living inside the male, is essential to their survival. Without it, they die. In the study, the researchers showed that male-female separation could be obtained by silencing specific long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), which are therefore a promising target for treatment of the disease (read more at: agencia.fapesp.br/41908).

How the worm works
Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease associated with poor hygiene and a lack of basic sanitation. It is transmitted when an infected person excretes feces containing schistosome eggs into the environment. The eggs hatch in freshwater, releasing larvae that infect snails. The snails are intermediate hosts, while humans are definitive hosts.
After four weeks, the larvae leave the snail as cercariae, the free-swimming larval stage. When humans come into contact with contaminated water, they acquire the disease via active skin penetration by cercariae.
In the human bloodstream, the cercariae progress to the schistosomule stage, eventually becoming adult worms that lodge in the veins of the intestines. The first symptoms of the disease appear two to six weeks after infection.
The disease is diagnosed by laboratory analysis of feces. Simple cases can be treated by a single dose of praziquantel, a drug discovered in the 1970s and distributed in Brazil by the national health system (Sistema Único de Saúde, SUS). However, it does not assure continuous protection. Patients taking it can be reinfected, and there are reports of parasite drug resistance.
“The next step is to develop a suitable vaccine formulation containing adjuvants and a novel mechanism for delivery of these antigens so that they produce better protection in the host. We have some targets with higher response levels,” Verjovski-Amaral explained. Butantan Institute has applied for a patent on the group’s discoveries linked to possible vaccine targets.
Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ), an arm of the Brazilian Health Ministry, has been working for years on what could be the world’s first schistosomiasis vaccine. Called Schistovac, it is in the testing stage and contains a modified version of the Sm14 protein found in S. mansoni. The protein normally plays a key role in trafficking fatty acids, which are essential to the parasite’s cellular functions. The modified version is designed to prevent proliferation.
The article “Schistosoma mansoni vaccine candidates identified by unbiased phage display screening in self-cured rhesus macaques” is at: www.nature.com/articles/s41541-023-00803-x.

HERE WE GO!
