Taken the same day, I was shown the location of the mist nets and they just so happened to be near pools that contained smooth newt (Lissotriton vulgaris), or mindre vattensalamander, larvae, just like the one caught here, that admittedly looked like fish fry. Before they become the adults we know, they start out usually during April to May as one of 100–500 eggs that are laid one-by-one wrapped in aquatic vegetation before hatching in 10-30 days depending on water temperature. Once hatched, they start life as a fully aquatic larva, like the one here, feeding on small invertebrates. Then usually around August-September, they transition to the eft phase when they are immature and dwelling on land with moist substrate, staying near their original water body. Taken on 2021 11th December, these are preserved smooth newts (Lissotriton vulgaris vulgaris), or mindre vattensalamander. As shown here, the males also have dorsal crests during the breeding season, albeit not jagged the the great crested newts. Taken 2021 16th November, one of my classmates found a smooth newt (Lissotriton vulgaris vulgaris), or mindre vattensalamander. This individual was just trying to hibernate in the rocks before being distributed. In response, it was showing off its warning colors. After getting this picture, I decided to find it another spot near, only this time it couldn't get disturbed and it was wet.
