My parents are extremely fortunate to have many snuffly-nosed, prickly visitors to their garden 🦔🦔🦔 Sadly we are hedgehog-less so I’ve been planning to stitch my own little friends for some time…and here they are! While we may not be fortunate enough to have hedgehogs visiting us, we do have a thriving colony of squirrels thanks to a number of old oak trees just outside our garden. Our cinnamon-dusted inhabitants are officially grey, but they have the most wonderful russet tint and are totally adorable 🧡🐿🍂 . The squirrels living in Honeyapple Meadow are the traditional red variety, but I suspect they love blackberries as much as ours do…and walnuts. If you ever want to become acquainted with a squirrel, offer up a walnut or two - you’ll have a friend for life! Or at least until the bag of walnuts is empty 🥜🌰🫘 . Are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin... . Once upon a time, an embroiderer was in need of a hat. Being of a crafty disposition and having some straw to hand, she decided to make a straw bonnet. She’d not made a bonnet out of straw before, but being an accomplished weaver and embroiderer, ‘How hard can it be?’ she thought. . Well, she wove and she stitched, and she stitched and she wove and the bonnet gradually came to life. It wasn’t quite how she’d imagined, but her fingers were getting tired and she was certain that with a few decorative flourishes it would be perfect for the Easter Bonnet competition at Honeyapple Meadow’s Spring Fair. . ‘At last it’s done!’ She announced to the gardener and as she proudly settled it on her head, asked him ‘What do you think?’ . The gardener stared, smiled slightly and then let out a guffaw. Doubled over with laughter, he gasped ‘Wha...wha...what is that thing?’. Somewhat insulted, the embroiderer huffed ‘It’s my new bonnet, and I think it’s very fine indeed.’ ‘Well,’ the gardener said between wheezes, ‘the bees certainly seem to like it!’ . Looking up, the embroiderer realised he was right. Bees were hovering around her head and appeared to be trying to find an entrance... . ‘I give up’ she sighed ‘maybe it’s not so easy to make a straw bonnet after all. But since the bees seem to like it so much, maybe there’s something else I can do with it...’ Taking the bonnet off her head, the embroiderer placed it on a wooden step under the clematis. . Ever since that day, the beehives at Honeyapple Meadow have been made of straw as a reminder that not everything is as easy as it looks...🐝🐝🐝 . So what are the benefits of stitching two panels together to make an ornament? Surely it’s easier to just cover the back of the stitched panel with fabric (such as sticky felt)? Well, apart from the extra stability, the cord for hanging sits in the ‘gutter’ between the two panels, needing only a couple of stitches at the top to secure - no glue required! It’s nearly time!! Those of you who know me well will know that I love Christmas - the twinkling lights, the food, the post-gluttony walks, the excuse to stay home and snuggle under a pile of cats, the extra time to spend with family and friends, and most of all? Yes, those chickens are wearing Santa hats.
