I wished I had been wearing a mask the whole time I’d been there as it definitely can’t be healthy to breathe that in. I had brought a few masks with me just in case but hadn’t needed them so they’d all been moved to my big bag, and of course this flight was the one where a mask was required and I didn’t have one! They gave me one at the gate along with a sour look though. La Paz airport was the best of the trip so far, a lot more modern than Lima and with more facilities for the amount of passengers so it didn’t seem so crowded. I took the minibus 212 which was destined for downtown La Paz. I sat in the very back corner as I figured I’d be about the last person off, and then it got super crowded in all around me in every other seat. It only cost 5 bolivianos (less than $1) and took about 45 minutes to get into the central city. I hopped out when a lady and her very elderly companion started yelling at the driver asking him to take them closer but he was stuck at a steep one way the opposite way and these people didn’t understand that it’s not a private taxi! I visited Roasters Specialty Coffee in Sopocachi for breakfast of a strong cortado and French toast which in hindsight probably wasn’t the greatest decision right away… it was delicious though after days of not eating. I walked all the way back up to the hotel I’d stayed in previously to collect my bag and relocate it to the next hotel which was much nicer and a better location. I also picked up a reloadable card for the Teleferico system. Basically because La Paz/El Alto cities are built into the mountains, there are a lot of steep hills that make transport connection difficult. Also this city is so extremely busy but with a lot of poor people without their own wheels that there is a huge demand for ridership on public transport. As a result, the Teleferico was built. It’s a huge cable car gondola system that connects all the different neighbourhoods of La Paz and extends all the way up to El Alto. There are 38 stations across 11 different lines and 32km of cable tracks that carry almost 600,000 passengers per day. Each coloured line costs 3 bolivianos to ride and you can transfer from one colour to another for 2 bolivianos so I loaded my card with about 30 bolivianos which should be enough to ride around the whole system for a day. My new hotel was near the Mercado de las Brujas (the Witches Market) so I went for a walk around there and picked up a few souvenirs, didn’t see too much to do with witchcraft unfortunately! I bought a llama pocket tee for 100 which was a little bit overpriced but really cool and not like other souvenir shirts that are all the same. I also picked up a puzzle for Eva and a couple little llama magnets because they’re so cute and cheap - 5 bolivianos here compared to 5 soles in Peru so basically half the price. As I walked on the market turned into a regular street market and I bought a larger backpack for 35 bolivianos as my tiny bag was a bit too small now for the amount of souvenirs I was getting and for $5 I really can’t complain! I reached San Francisco plaza which was crowded like all of La Paz, there was a huge police presence at the roundabout here, lined up like they were waiting for a fight to break out. There were people everywhere sitting on every available bench, step, wall, and leaning against rails making it hard to take a photo of the church between them all, not to mention all the pigeons! Chaos!

Bonus travel day

What a day. 5 flights in the space of 3 (or 2? what is time anymore) days must be my new record. Let’s not break it anytime soon.

We woke up around 7am which hopefully means our jet lag won’t be that bad? Courtesy of not sleeping last couple of days, I guess. We were way too tired for a shower last night so that was the first thing.

Until I found an unexpected guest that is. Meet Heddrick, the shower cockroach. That sure woke me up. I first attempted to peacefully negotiate with him while Alex was still trying to wake up. However, he refused to be reasoned with so I tried spraying him with water (from very far away), hoping that he’ll get the hint and crawl away wherever he came from. But Heddrick just lazily walked off to a corner where the water couldn’t reach him a kept chilling.

At this point I needed a bit of a breather so I went back into the room to think about my next steps. Thankfully though, Alex was now awake. He informed me that he does not negotiate with terrorists, promptly squished Heddrick, came back into the room for a breather as well because Heddrick’s guts were apparently pretty gross (I didn’t dare to look) and went back to wipe him off (while shouting, ‘oh no, he’s still moving’). What a fucking experience.

We decided to have our breakfast out on a terrace as the air felt tiny bit cleaner than last night although it still probably equalled good 2 packs of cigarettes. Chilled in the room for a while and off we went to the airport.

I watched this video recently that talked about things you should do with your partner before getting married. One of them was ‘take a trip together, where everything that can go wrong, goes wrong’. We didn’t get a chance to do that prior to the wedding but let me tell you, these last couple days made up for it. I got a little suspicious about our flights when my check in didn’t show my additional luggage. And since we were at the airport early, I figured it’s better to check. Guess what, no luggage.

We booked the flights through AirAsia website but with VietJet (yes, I know I always preach to only ever book directly through a company you’re flying with…). VietJet said they didn’t get the luggage booking and it’s too late to add another one. AirAsia said that the way it’s booked through them, they can’t help me in person and I have to buy new luggage and get a refund for what I already paid later and asked for a confirmation from VietJet that they indeed didn’t get the booking. When I picked up the confirmation, the lady suddenly realised I actually can add luggage now and as it wasn’t a crazy ridiculous price, we just went with it. I’m pretty sure there is an argument with AirAsia somewhere in my not-so-distant future but that is a problem for another day.

Flight number one was fine but landing in Bangkok and knowing what the ‘fog’ was all about… it was obvious the smoke was down here too. Even if only 8x the ‘healthy’ amount rather than 23x. Short layover and a coffee later, we were on our last flight for the next couple of weeks (fucking finally). I would like to say it was an easy flight but with Alex’s stuffy sinuses, the pressure changes are not his favourite thing and he looked like he was being tortured. To be completely honest, I think I flew with stuffy sinuses once and I can still remember debating whether my eye will pop out or my eardrum will burst first. I can’t imagine doing 5 flights with that.

Our hotel (which we managed to extend to come early!) recommended we get a taxi from the airport and so we ended up in a minibus with a bunch of other people. 300 baht for 2 people for 30km ride isn’t too bad. But we still arrived after 10pm- starving and tired.

The only thing we could find any strength for at this point was food. But you wouldn’t believe how difficult it is to find Thai food in Ao Nang after 10-11pm so we just ended up in the first restaurant that was still open and we will hopefully have a chance to explore some more later- maybe find a place with a little less tourists because this area feels a bit too European for us.

Day 10 - Monteverde to Manuel Antonio

This entry has not been spell or sensor checked as I am nodding off as I wri….

We’re still not entirely sure what happened at the sports bar as our Spanish is nicht gut and our host for the evening didn’t really seem to have a clue what was going on. When we went to settle up he only charged us for a round of drinks despite G’s fantastic attempt at communicating complete with charades. We think it’s because our food took so long it was on la casa! This morning we saw the group of whippersnappers that were tearing up the dance floor at the sports bar board their bus, with the queen twerker looking rather jaded! Our view point was from outside the hostel as we enjoyed breakfast after getting up with plenty of time to finish packing and sit in the sunshine whilst waiting for our shuttle from Monteverde to Manuel Antonio.

As always the drive was extremely scenic and my half arsed attempts at capturing decent photos wouldn’t do the landscape justice, especially with the glare and finger marks on the window! At around the half way mark we were told we’d be getting out of our current minibus and in to another, a fairly common theme so far which seems to work quite well on the long distance transfers! We’ve been to a few ‘service stations’ on our travels so far and I must say this one was particularly good (I’m not saying it’s a slow news day but it doesn’t get much better than this!) complete with bizarre Jack Sparrow statue. We’re en route to hotter climates and this pit stop was bloody boiling! 28 degrees+ at 10am according to my weather app, but that didn’t stop them putting out chocolate cakes in the middle of the sun! There was one item on offer that did appeal to us in the form of fresh fruit water smoothies and they looked so enticing that even I partook in 3 of my 5 day (blended to a pulp in a plastic cup complete with straw). It was a very refreshing way to wet my whistle - orange, pineapple and mango. Whilst G went for watermelon, kiwi and… (I would ask her but she’s already a sleep, she’s been a bit under the weather these last couple of days and it’s been a bit stressful trying to organise transportation to our next destination. More on that to follow!

As we boarded our next minibus onward to Manuel Antonio (a bloke who sounds like he should be working in Fawlty Towers) it was mere minutes before we turned round and headed back. Turns out there was one more passenger to join our wagon who had no where else to sit but up front with the driver and called ‘shot gun’ to the rest of us in the economy seats. I was laughing at that comment for a good few minutes, as it was the perfect way to react to such a situation! An hour or so later we started dropping off members of our party to different accommodations (one of which even had a pool - dreamy!) Until G and I were the last ones on board to depart at Planet B Hostel (you know the one from Toy Story!) We were welcome by Michael who gave us a tour of the place and let us know that our room would be ready within the hour. There’s also laundry here so we dropped off our stinky bag of damp clothes and look forward to having them returned lovely and fresh, best of luck to which ever poor bugger has to deal with that!

We seated ourselves in the garden in a couple of rocking chairs and looked at our options for moving on to the penultimate part of our trip - the jungle! Now we started in the jungle, but that was still attached to civilisation, there was breakfast, taxis, Wi-Fi! But this next jungle stay can only be accessed via a half hour walk on foot after driving up a hill in a 4x4. It wasn’t clear online what the best course of action would be. Up until this point it’s been fairly simple in terms of using a mix of public transportation and private shuttles, but this spot is a bit more off the beaten track, quite literally! After looking at a few forums (where other traveller’s can respond to questions) liaising with the Air BnB host and talking to Michael. It seemed there were a few options available. We could either get a few buses to a place near by and then taxi it to a shop at the bottom of the hill where the local shopkeeper offers a drop off service. Rent a car ourselves. Walk. Or a combination of all the above. We also have to let the Air bnb host know when we’re near by so he can meet us and show us to our cabin in the middle of no where. The only small problem being is he may not have phone signal and eventually, neither would we. The public transport was a possibility, but relied on the shopkeeper being in for the lift. Renting a car seemed unlikely due to availability and cost. It was a real conundrum wrapped in a pickle. The only real hope we had is that someone else would be there at a similar time in a car and that we could jump in with them. And after liaising on the forum and the Air BnB host, it just so happens that there is another couple going from Manuel Antonio to the jungle, so we’re hopping in with them (as it stands!) Pura Fucking Vida baby! What we’ll do getting back, who knows! But that’s a problem for the future!

So after confirming a way to our next destination G and I had a spot of lunch in the large outdoor communal area here and made a plan of action for the rest of the day. Or what was left of it any way. We decided to Uber to one of the larger supermarkets around here so we could stock up a few bits for whilst we’re here, but more importantly for when we’re in the jungle as there isn’t so much as electricity there let alone a Co-Op! After a supermarket sweep (or more of a slog in the heat!) we had 3 full bags of food ready to see us through. All we had to do was find some space in the fridge, which wasn’t easy but G’s ability to shuffle food and throw other people’s stuff out is second to none! We returned to our room, showered up and caught the local bus towards the town centre, but not quite as far for some Thai food. The bus is 390 colons (about 55p) each which isn’t too shabby, for however far you’re going. Be it the next stop or the first to the last. Both drivers had real Ernie Prang vibes (HP ref!) whilst driving the night bus. They seemed quite content counting the change and putting it in to the right slots of the coin cushion whilst navigating around all the sharp twists and turns in the road. Our dinner was a recommendation as per the Lonely Planet guide and was tasty enough, but served extremely quickly and felt a little rushed. Of course it could be that it was normal speed and we’ve become accustomed to last night’s service! That said, the haste to eat and return was probably no bad thing as I think G needs as much rest as possible tonight. As luck would have it the bus was coming down the road just as we arrived at the stop, so again no hanging around!

Naturally G being G refused to go to bed straight away, (it was only 8.30pm but they’re long days and early starts for the main!) so we played a game of Love Letters and I won for the first time in about a week so she must be feeling sub par! Thankfully our room has air-con, which is one of the reasons we (I) chose it vs the cheaper lodgings closer to town. I think rest is of the utmost importance at our grand old age and we can’t be kept up by all the young riff raff staying in the cheap resorts! We’re off for a day at the beach tomorrow, so finally a chance to really chill out and top up the tan!
