Fans freak out over Tristan Falkenrath’s super cute Instagram stories of MINZY! ( + Comeback Speculation? )

Lovebirds alert! Fans of everyone’s favorite rockband, Permafrost, went ham over a number of Instagram stories posted by the frontman, Tristan Falkenrath yesterday. In particular, three that featured bandmate and girlfriend, Minji Farell.

The first one, posted in the morning, showed the back of Minji’s head picking out snacks with the second one posted not too long after that, with her pushing the cart full of things in what can be assumed to be the carpark. (A grocery date, how cute!) The last one came in the evening, the guitarist looking off into the distance in a lowlit romantic setting.

One fan on Twitter, @/temporaryburning, noted: “gUYS THEY’RE SO DOMESTIC OH MY GOD HOW SOFT ARE THESE PICTURES 😭🥺” with the images attached, gaining over 80,000 likes.

Another fan, @/rockyjmsns, gained a hefty 10,000 retweets when they jokingly tweeted: “ok this isn’t fair when are we getting the levi & dinesh date pictures @/permafrost wHEN!!”

One other tweet that became popular was from @/wheremonochadsbeen who said: “i can’t decide who i wanna be more: tristan, in love and getting to see his gf pick up stroop waffles, or minji, picking up the stroop waffles and also in love”

Since Tristan’s famously emotional acceptance speech at the GRAMMY’s where he announced their rumored relationship to be true, their fans have been adamantly supportive of the couple with every little breadcrumb they get of them.

While not particularly open with their displays of affection (and unsurprisingly so), there have been glimpses of the sweet couple especially on social media, whether it be their own accounts or family & friend’s ones. 

The last time an uproar like this sparked was sparked was when fans noticed the couple cuddled up on a couch in the background of a couple of Instagram stories from band mates Levi Zapata and Dinesh Malik while in the studio in March, and then before that, a rare birthday post for Tristan’s 29th birthday on Minzy’s account in February. 

It was said by sources in July that they had been living together for at least a couple of months, Tristan reportedly moving in to Minzy’s home, but keen observers noted that Tristan seemed to have stuck around in the MNZY residence as early as late 2019.

This all only served to strengthen the #MinTan ship movement within and outside the fandom. 

HOWEVER, that’s not the only cause of the uproar from Permafrost fans when these pictures went up! 

The recent hair switch up from Minzy’s classic black to strawberry blonde have  many speculating profusely that the band’s comeback may be closer than it was ever before!

While they didn’t have much else to go off of, it can be noted that changing up hairstyles is a big indicator for a new era of music for any artists.

Nothing has been confirmed from the band or the label despite Dinesh Malik joining the band officially as their drummer late in 2019, but fans are desperately waiting for a new record since their last one  -  Darker Now  -  was released 5 years ago in 2015. 

Unfortunately, according to Levi Zapata when asked by paparazzi in June about a new album, all he replied with was “I have no idea what you’re talking about”.

Though the Grammy’s had it’s fair share of big winners and losers (nothing out of the usual, right?) there was a certain level of extremity when it came to the performances this year. 

Some performance finally lived up to that of a ‘Grammy moment’ (and beyond) while other’s failed to show anything worth even a performance at the local bar. It only seemed ironically fitting as a welcome into the new decade - a true show of the balance of life. A yin and yang showing fit for music’s biggest night. 

So of course we had to rank it all. Here’s the best and worst of the 2020 Grammy performances!

4. MINZY

Who knew everyone’s favorite Asian Ice Guitarist would be rocking the Grammy stage so soon? After her Hotter Than Hell VEVO session blew up on social media and Blow Your Mind (Mwah) became the hit of the summer (End of summer? Fall?) We had nothing short of high expectations for Miss MNZY here. And thankfully, she didn’t disappoint.

Maybe, she even went beyond what was expected. While a simple dance-focused performance ala those viral videos would’ve sufficed, she began a little more dramatically. 

Centre stage, baby pink electric guitar in hand (a guitar Permafrost fans recognized as her favorite one, even donning the bands name by the strings), spotlight on her. She plays the chords to the chorus of Hotter Than Hell in between acapella bouts of her singing the lyrics. 

And then after just one chorus, a little pause for her to go down the steps, hand over her guitar before she started a guitar-heavy rendition of BYM (Mwah)! She only has about four backup dancers with her as bright pink and purple lights wash over her while she dances. 

The sparkly purple mini dress she has on is underwhelming at best, and the Doc Martens were an unfortunate choice for something like the Grammy’s (but were there to help make the dancing easier probably). But it’s a small price to pay for the way she explosively takes up all the stage - there’s no shits and giggles here. Just a popstar taking over the stage with stage presence alone. She didn’t need bells and whistles to catch people’s attentions. It’s definitely a direct “fuck you” to the people who vehemently claimed she was a rampant lip-syncher/she only got big by a fluke.  Not only that, but the beginning with her Permafrost guitar? It was a gentle reminder that: this pop thing? Just a side gig for her. 

It was satisfying to see how people in the room responded like we thought they should’ve. Entranced, and by the end of it all, dancing along with her. We even got a couple of shots of Tristan Falkenrath hollering his support from where he sat, which at the time just seemed like #JustBestFriendThings seeing as he’s grown much closer to Minzy in particular over the hiatus. But just about an hour later, the bomb was dropped that #MinTan was very real and apparently has been for awhile now so that’s just an extra cuteness bonus for us.

“Minji!”

She blinked away from the window in surprise, looking back at the rest of the bus. Her eyes narrowed quickly. It had been awhile since anyone called her name in there - the attempts at picking on her ceased after the incident in November. So hearing someone call her name in this setting very suddenly made her defenses heighten - what did they want to start now?

“Hey, Minji!”

Considering his towering height, she spotted him quickly then, as he came barreling towards to where she sat. She was in the front most row, so his advancing from the back all the way to the front seemed to catch the attention of some of their schoolmates.

Mostly because really, according to the individual notoriety they had, what kind of business would Tristan Falkenrath have with Minji Farell of all people?

“This seat taken?” he asked, but didn’t wait for her to answer before sitting, suddenly filling the usually vacant spot next to her. 

She blinked at him as he fussed about his bag, now mostly perplexed. Though the contact wasn’t as rare or surprising as most would think, Minzy really had no idea why he would be talking to her outside of practice. It had only been about a month and a half since she officially joined Permafrost as their guitarist, and while their synergy was proving to be genuinely good, even then their interactions were sparse and rare. She barely talked to him one-on-one, they didn’t even share a class together (as far as she could tell), and she had yet to even acknowledge the existence of the band outside of Levi’s garage. 

Finally, she found words again, and they came out sharp and cold. “What are you doing here?”

And instead of being surprised, or really even reacting like she expected him to, Tristan glanced back up at her to grin widely before going back to fishing through his bag again. What the fuck?

“Hello? I asked you a question?”

“Hold up- it’s in here somewhere…”

Minji’s eyebrows scrunched together now, not sure what to think anymore. If anything, what was surprising her more was that she really had no reason to make him leave. He wasn’t goading her or making her uncomfortable. She could make the excuse that he was bothering her-

“A-hah! Here it is!” Tristan exclaimed, almost making her jump in the process from pulling her out of her thoughts. In his hand he held an mp3 player, and he was in the process of putting in one of the earbuds into his ear. 

Before she could question him again, he held up the other earbud to her. Which, again, caught the girl off guard because really what the hell was he doing? 

He could obviously catch her dumbfounded expression as she looked between him and the earbud. To which he laughed, something far too loud that drew far too much attention back to them again.

“Oh come on! Just trust me. You said you wanted more girl bands, right?”

Huh. She did. About a week ago during practice, when they were idly discussing the music they liked. Which, she did participate in much more than she usually would. It was the most they got out of her since they joined - she explained her dad’s love for pop and her mother always playing the Korean songs whenever she could. About how accidentally stumbling on to the alternative radio stations made her interested in music and that she detested the lack of girls in the music she listened to - especially on the ‘heavier side’.  

Cautiously, she took the earbud from him and put it in, still skeptical about whatever he had up his sleeve. She was harsh, sure. And she knew that. But she had her reasons.

What played in her left ear was a far cry from the classic pop her father played around the house. The guitars were loud and the yell-y female vocals were messy. It was angry and aggressive and grimy, and Minji absolutely loved it. She looked up at Tristan, almost in awe of what they were listening to, and just like that he began explaining. That the band was called Bikini Kill, and that they essentially started this female punk movement - riot grrrl. That he could borrow some of his sister’s CDs for her and that there were a bunch of other bands that were great like this as well.

And for the first time, there was something of an inkling of respect that sparked in her for him. The way he talked so extensively and passionately about the music - that was something no one could fake. Paired with how frustratingly natural he was with music in general? Huh. He actually looked smart. 

They listened to a couple other Bikini Kill songs before the bus pulled up in front of their school and Minzy was quick to pull the earbud out. 

“Keep it- I have some other riot grrrl stuff in there.” He grinned. “ I can get it back during practice” He threw the last words behind him before practically jumping off of the bus, going to probably skip their first period to smoke.
