A crew of six women — including journalist Gayle King and pop singer Katy Perry— made a brief trip into space on Monday on a flight operated by Jeff Bezos’ private company, Blue Origin. The trip was the first by a female-only crew since Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s solo mission in 1963.
Blue Origin’s website says deposits for reserving a seat on an upcoming flight are $150,000. The launch inspired some blowback on social media as some critics labeled the event a publicity stunt and a moment for celebrities rather than everyday Americans.
These women made history by travelling in space long before the Blue Origin flight.

The first woman to travel in space was Soviet cosmonaut, Valentina Tereshkova. On 16th June 1963, Tereshkova was launched on a solo mission aboard the spacecraft Vostok 6. She spent more than 70 hours orbiting the Earth, two years after Yuri Gagarin’s first human-crewed flight in space. Tereshkova received 18 months of severe training with the Soviet Air Force after her selection.

The first British 🇬🇧 woman in space
Helen Patricia Sharman (b. 30 May 1963) is a chemist and technologist who became the first British astronaut in space and the first woman to visit the Mir space station in 1991.
First American 🇺🇸 woman in space
Sally Ride (26 May 1951 - 23 July 2012) was an American astronaut, physicist and engineer who m British astronaut ade history for the Western world when she became the first American woman to enter space, piloting the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1983.

A Short Trip To Space in a flight lasting around 11 minutes. The crew aboard the Blue Origin flight wants to be storytellers, in the same way that women astronauts are in their memoirs. But the well-known members of its crew are a reminder that hard work is only part of this particular story – fortune and privilege also play a part.

The Endless Space Sketch related (dedicated to Storyboard – Moonshot Edition sketchbook) • Mir was a space station that operated in low Earth orbit from 1986 to 2001, by the Soviet Union and later by Russia. Mir was the first modular space station and was assembled in orbit from 1986 to 1996. It had a greater mass than any previous spacecraft. At the time it was the largest artificial satellite in orbit, succeeded by the International Space Station (ISS) after Mir's orbit decayed in March 2001 after funding was cut off. • Mir endured 15 years in orbit, three times its planned lifetime. It outlasted the Soviet Union, that launched it into space. It hosted scores of crewmembers and international visitors. It raised the first crop of wheat to be grown from seed to seed in outer space. In 1991 Helen Sharman was launched into space on an eight-day mission to the Mir space station, and so became the first Briton ever in space. Just two years earlier Helen had answered a radio advert: “Astronaut wanted. No experience necessary”. She was selected for the Project Juno mission ahead of 13,000 other applicants, and underwent 18 months of intense flight training in Star City, Russia. She was launched into space in the Soyuz TM-12 with Soviet cosmonauts Anatoly Artsebarsky and Sergei Krikalev. It took them two days to reach the Mir space station, where she spent the majority of her eight days in orbit, and she famously smuggled an orange aboard the spacecraft. Whilst in orbit, Helen used her expertise in chemistry to conduct medical and agricultural experiments, and was also tasked with taking images of the British Isles. Project Juno transformed the then 27-year-old from a food technologist into a national hero. She’s pictured here with the SOKOL space suit she wore on her mission, which is on display in our Exploring Space gallery. . #OnThisDayInHistory #sciencemuseum #sciencemuseumlondon #helensharman #exploringspace #sokol #mirspacestation #spaceexploration #space #projectjuno #starcity #russia #internationalmuseumday #internationalmuseumday17 #museumday #imd2017 #imd17 #museumday
