#Repost @unesco (@get_repost) ・・・ 18 December is International Migrants Day. Millions of women and men are leaving their homes in the search of work and education. Millions are on the move, because they have no choice, to flee war and persecution, to escape the vicious circles of poverty, food insecurity and environmental degradation. Migration is a global phenomenon driven by many forces. These start with aspirations for dignity, safety and peace. The decision to leave home is always extreme, and, too often, the beginning of a dangerous, sometimes fatal journey. UNESCO is acting to advance the migration-related commitments of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This starts with education, by promoting access to quality education for Syrian refugees, by facilitating recognition of education diplomas and qualifications. Protecting the rights and dignity of every migrant means responding to humanitarian needs and advancing sustainable development. Fundamentally, this is about defending our common humanity through solidarity in action. In 1991 Helen Sharman was launched into space on an eight-day mission to the Mir space station, and so became the first Briton ever in space. Just two years earlier Helen had answered a radio advert: “Astronaut wanted. No experience necessary”. She was selected for the Project Juno mission ahead of 13,000 other applicants, and underwent 18 months of intense flight training in Star City, Russia. She was launched into space in the Soyuz TM-12 with Soviet cosmonauts Anatoly Artsebarsky and Sergei Krikalev. It took them two days to reach the Mir space station, where she spent the majority of her eight days in orbit, and she famously smuggled an orange aboard the spacecraft. Whilst in orbit, Helen used her expertise in chemistry to conduct medical and agricultural experiments, and was also tasked with taking images of the British Isles. Project Juno transformed the then 27-year-old from a food technologist into a national hero. She’s pictured here with the SOKOL space suit she wore on her mission, which is on display in our Exploring Space gallery. . #OnThisDayInHistory #sciencemuseum #sciencemuseumlondon #helensharman #exploringspace #sokol #mirspacestation #spaceexploration #space #projectjuno #starcity #russia #internationalmuseumday #internationalmuseumday17 #museumday #imd2017 #imd17 #museumday

Wishing a happy International Mountain Day to all! Let's celebrate mountains today, and every day! "Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity." - John Muir, "Our National Parks," 1901. #liveyouradventure #IMD2017 #MountainsMatter #internationalmountainday @unfao | Nuptse reflected at sunset in a small pond near Gorak Shep, Nepal. http://bit.ly/2AvTXys

#InternationalMigrantsDay in the times of Compacts: A #MigrantsDay compilation #IMD2017
Today is International Migrants Day, marking the 27th anniversary of the adoption of the “International Convention on the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families” by the General Assembly of the United Nations. Since last year there seem to have been two additional ratifications, bringing the total number up to 51. This number is unlikely to rise significantly in the near…

Mountains. They inspire, they frighten, they educate, they inspire us, perhaps in equal measure. Personally, they have been a focal point of my life since I discovered climbing at age 12. In the 31 years since, the mountains have - to quote Boukreev - been my cathedrals. The mountains have pushed me to my absolute limits physically; they've enlightened me spiritually in profound ways; they've educated me culturally and opened my eyes to peoples and cultures and worldviews I would have missed otherwise; and the mountains have taught me innumerable times their intrinsic worth to us as a physical and spiritual world. The might and power of the mountains - and the people, flora, and fauna who inhabit them - belies a masked reality: they are powerful and proud, tall and tough, but they are also vulnerable. Globally, we see the effects of climate change and development inequality prominently in the mountains: glaciers are retreating, crops are failing, people are suffering, environments are struggling... And it all flows down from the mountains, eventually impacting us all. But, mountain people and environments - like the silent sentinels rising above them - are resilient and capable and will push through the challenges if given a fighting chance. On Monday, December 11, many of us mountain lover will gather in Rome to celebrate the bounty that is the mountain world, joining with others in celebration of International Mountain Day across the globe. Please join us: write a post, share a message, go climb a peak or walk a hill, and celebrate the mountains on Monday, and every day. #internationalmountainday #IMD2017 #liveyouradventure #mountainsmatter @eddiebauer #mountainpartnership #bestmountainartists | In this photo, #Nuptse rises from the evening sky from Khumbu Basecamp on Mt. #Everest. http://bit.ly/2nK709n
