You knew better than to get involved with humans, it was only a heartbeat waiting to stop. There were so many things that could cause a heart to stop whether it was natural or homicide the list would go on forever. But regardless you lived there and felt the need to make friends and play nice. Of course, none of your fellow immortals got nearly as close to them as you did, other than Phastos. The way that death approaches so swiftly is the scariest of all. You had not left with Druig, originally you had moved around cities. But stuck to one tightly, one night you had been out on your own getting groceries at a very late hour. As you were going back to your car you heard screaming. In your head, you knew better than to get yourself involved but this was the voice of a child. So you investigated further and saw the child being forced into a vehicle crying and screaming. Turned out to be his father who had been abusing him, in that moment you made one choice that could have made you into a vigilante. You took in that child until he was able to live on his own giving him the best life you could. The two of you still kept in touch until one day he had stopped responding, though you did not worry about your once-a-week call not going through or him not texting you. You assumed he was busy, nothing more. So there you stood at the sink doing dishes as your loving soon-to-be husband had gone into the bedroom to put away some laundry when he noticed your phone vibrating on the dresser.
“Darling, someone is trying to call you.” Druig walked quickly into the room handing you the phone but when you took it from him the number was not recognizable.
“Hello, it’s Y/N who’s this?” Druig put his hands on your hips and turned you away from the sink doing the dishes for you.
“My name is Ben.” You thought about the voice on the phone as you didn’t recognize it at all as much as you tried.
“Hi Ben, how can I help you? Do you have the wrong number?” The young boy was taking deep breaths into the phone and Druig noticed the look on your face walking over to you as he dried off dishes.
“No, my mom told me to call you, your dad’s mother.” You had known that he had kids, you had seen pictures of them before and the girl had once told you hi on the phone.
“What’s going on?” Druig stood behind you listening in with his hands placed on your shoulders rubbing his hands up and down your arms.
“They found daddy.” Ben’s voice was breaking and it wasn’t from the phone, you could hear him start to cry.
“What do you mean they found him? Was he missing? Honey, where is your mother? Can she talk to me or any adult that knows what happened? Go get a drink of water, sit down and take deep breaths.” You stayed exactly where you were as Druig too tried to piece together what he meant. But the moment he realized he took his hands off of your shoulders and wrapped them around your waist.
“Hi this is Deputy Conners, Who are you to Mr. Lynch?” Hearing that there was a deputy over the phone did not give you much hope for the situation.
“Benjamin Lynch called me about his father.” You leaned back into Druig more worried about what might have happened.
“In what relation are you to Timothy Lynch?” You looked up to Druig not entirely sure what to tell the deputy until Druig mouthed mother.
“Mother, I am his mother.” You shrugged a bit not sure whether that was the proper answer or not, truly you weren’t his real mother she was dead long before you met him.
“Ma’am your son was found dead in the.” The moment you heard dead white noise traveling through your skull, your ears turned red as did your face, eyes welling up in tears. Your phone hit the ground as you lost all control over your body. Druig immediately caught you knowing exactly what was coming.
“Hey, hey.” Druig held you against his chest as tears fell down your cheeks, he knew the worst was yet to come.
He was dead, you saved him from a life of hell, you saved him and now he was dead. He was gone, his heart was stopped, his lungs no longer taking in air, and there was nothing you could do about it. You would never hear him speak again all you had were videos, you would never see him again all you had were pictures. You couldn’t speak, couldn’t express that to Druig as he held onto you kissing your head and keeping a tight hold around you. He could feel the heat coming from your limbs, your veins began to glow. Druig’s eyes got wide as he picked you up and rushed you out the back door off of the porch. When you screamed he leaned down into your shoulder trying to keep you somewhat contained as the power that coursed from your veins began to destroy and mess up certain aspects of the Earth around you. In the dark of the night, your power was the only true light blasting around the trees and across the lake. As much as he wished he could calm you down, take away the pain of grief, mend your heart he knew that it was physically impossible. To get in your head would only push back the grief that would build into your body, there was no way to fix this. The moment you had settled down into his arms he took deep breaths as the two of you fell down into the grass.
“Sh.” He whispered in your ear and held onto you like you were the one facing death, kissing your forehead he picked you up again. Holding onto his neck you sobbed into his shoulder, the arm under your back stroked you softly.
As the two of you made it back inside you refused to let go of him, he sat down on the couch with you in his arms. He continued to hold you, softly rocking you back and forth kissing your face every so often. Not even attempting to wipe away the tears knowing that they fell like blood out of a wound. As your sobs became more silent, though you were still crying Druig knew the next step was to try and talk to you, get you out of your own head without entering it.
“I don’t understand what you’re going through, but to see your physical reaction be so emotionally unhinged in such a destructive manner is damning to my soul.” He spoke quietly into your ear as he touched your face.
“It was a heartbeat, at one point it was going to stop, I should have expected such to happen, but I believed that if he lived a full life I would’ve been ready. But the truth is I can't say that anymore, this feeling tells me otherwise.” You were now sitting up in his lap looking at his face to face knowing what he was doing.
“No one is ever ready for the waves that drown us. To swim is almost impossible and so is keeping your head up. So when you can’t just float, just breathe the water in and let it out like air. Eventually, your body will become accustomed to breathing the water. You will never live the same way until you are ready, but you will always hold the ability to breathe the water.” Druig held your face in his hands wiping the now slower tears away.
“I love you, truly I cannot imagine what damage I would do in grief if I lost you.” Leaning in you pushed your forehead up against his.
“Eternal love is what I promise you more than anything. We are not made to die, but all the same, we are not here to protect those who do. We are not made to interact with them as if to have no emotions but yet we are given each other and we feel the same pain they do. The same highs and lows. I was gifted with abilities mortals do not have, yes, but the best gift I was given was the ability to love you unconditionally with my entire being.” Druig was trying to drive your mind slightly away from the situation at hand.
“I am sorry for the burden this will be putting on your life, seeing me this way and dealing with the family. My brain is telling me that no matter what happened to him I could have prevented this. I am the immortal life form, now I must allow us to live in photographs and videos.” The arrow that struck your heart once more was the idea that you could never physically see him again.
“Do not apologize for this, death is not a burden, it's inevitable. Years ago you did the right thing, had you left him where he was he would have never had experienced the time he had. You having a heart for someone who could not find anyone else with one was not your accident. You loved him and he knew that when he died, he knew you cared and that if he needed anything that you would be there faster than the sun itself could rise in the morning. You did not allow this to happen, you are not guilty.” Druig looked into your eyes the entire time he spoke making sure that your eyes did not falter from his own. He was caressing your cheek with his left hand as you leaned into his touch more.
“Hold me tonight, please, it’s the only way I will sleep.” You begged him with tears welling in your eyes again.
“Of course.” The two of you mutually agreed to rise from the piece of furniture together, you on shaky legs as he held you up.
As he helped walk you to your bedroom his mind made a note of your phone on the floor and how it would be important in the morning. Letting go only for a moment for you to get into bed he covered you with the duvet and comforter that were tucked into the bed. Crawling underneath it to join you he held you close, feeling your breath on his neck. Running his fingers through your hair and kissing your forehead made you tire out as you had earlier released your most intense feelings. No words were spoken as the silence surrounded you but before you could sleep you had to end the night like any other. Leaning your head up towards him, you pressed your lips against him before returning back to your position. He was holding you, he was your place of comfort, the ocean could not touch you so long as this was the situation you were in…
