  Good evening!

  Welcome to the fifth edition of Monday Memo. A diary of fun things: new openings I’m excited about, exhibitions I like to go to, products I love, initiatives that caught my eye, news I want to share and much more. All related to hotspots, design and travel of course. Every two weeks 10 things, so let’s go!

  Pizza in Amsterdam-Noord

Remember Restaurant Europa at Het Hem in Zaandam? They had to close the doors due to Corona, but they now opened an even better, pizza, restaurant in Amsterdam-Noord: Euro Pizza. Enjoy!

    From Paris to Amsterdam

Luxury scented candle and perfume house Diptyque opened its first boutique in Amsterdam. You can find their whole collection here – including lots of exclusive editions.

    Code terracotta

As long as Antwerp and Brussels are code orange we have to travel to alternative cities like Hasselt. Check out the new Z33 Huis voor Actuele Kunst, Design & Architectuur designed by Italian architect Francesca Torzo.

    Leading role for photography

BredaPhoto starts on September 9th (until October 25th) and explores the world of tomorrow by exhibitions like ‘Power to the Models’, where Jan Hoek gives his models the full control on their portrait. Also check out Erik Kessels ‘Destroy my Face’ where he plays with how far plastic surgery can go.

Stijlen, trends en hypes

Iets is een hype als schijnbaar vanuit het niets een hele hoop mensen er interesse in hebben. Vaak wordt het aangespoord via het internet. Ze zijn altijd van korte duur. Een voorbeeld van een hype in de interieur industrie is bijvoorbeeld die periode van een paar zomers terug, toen alles ineens in de vorm van een ananas of een flamingo moest zijn. Lampjes, kastgreepjes, knuffels, prints, et cetera. Je ziet nu nog wel her en der spullen in die vormen, maar vaak zijn die afgeprijsd, want het is nu al niet meer actueel meer.

Als een hype afzwakt, maar wel heel populair blijft, spreek je van een trend. Er is dan iets veranderd in onze manier van kijken naar een bepaald product of materiaal. Deze duren langer en er wordt minder over gepraat, maar het is nog wel populair. Een voorbeeld hiervan is het gebruik van messing. Een paar jaar geleden dook in de winkels ineens van alles op in dit materiaal, en nog steeds zijn er heel veel messing accessoires verkrijgbaar, maar het is niet meer zo dat je overal alleen nog maar messing ziet als je binnen komt.

Een stijl is wanneer er een duidelijke sfeer ontstaat. Deze sfeer kan tot stand komen door bepaalde trends en/of hypes te combineren met een bepaalde basis. Een voorbeeld hiervan is bijvoorbeeld modern minimalistisch, waarbij strakke meubels gebruikt worden die allemaal dezelfde rustige kleuren hebben. Dit kan gecombineerd worden met messing producten en er zou best een plekje gevonden kunnen worden voor een grafische flamingo print aan de muur, bijvoorbeeld.

Hypes, trends en stijlen bestaan al heel heel lang. Zelfs bij de Romeinen waren er trends, van bijvoorbeeld haarstijlen, en trends ontstaan vanuit hypes. In deze moderne tijd wisselen de hypes zich wel heel snel achter elkaar af, ook omdat we via het internet binnen mum van tijd alles van over de hele wereld in de gaten zouden kunnen houden, als we dat zouden willen. 

Als ontwerper wil ik graag milieubewust bezig zijn. Een goed afgewogen trend past daar best tussen, naar mijn mening. Het is dan wel belangrijk om écht goed na te denken, of het over 10 jaar nog steeds interessant zal staan. Een kaars in de vorm van een ananas zou dan toch een beetje raar staan.

Hoewel, veel hypes en trends komen ook na verloop van tijd weer terug.

COR UNUM DEN BOSCH

Cor Unum produces ceramics designed by inspiring designers, architects, and visual artists. They recently opened their showroom and workshop in Den Bosch in the same building as MisterDesign and Garage Pompen & Verlouw.

  Ceramics vs. top design talent

Cor Unum has always operated from Den Bosch. The brand started in the fifties and brought people with a distance from the labor market to work. They still do, although there are now many volunteers working for them – as we can see in the cafe with a long row of coffee mugs with the names of all the employees on it – and they work together with the best designers. Local artists like Roderick Vos and Maarten Baas, Dutch designers like Mae Engelgeer and Jeroen Wand but also with the British Jasper Morrison and the Australian designer Marc Newson among others.

  Sustainability and new technologies

In the new space, they can exhibit their work and sell it (you can already buy a coffee cup for 9 euros). But they can now also inform people about the design process. People often think that they still work with pottery wheels, but nowadays everything is molded. Cor Unum excels in high-end design and is always looking for ways to combine sustainability with new technologies. For example, the color of Alex de Witte’s works came together of splashes of other works. In this way, all his designs are unique, and no unnecessary color is wasted.

  Striking designs

I’m also drawn to the vases of Geert Lap which stands out in terms of color. From eye level, it looks like the top is round, but when you look from above, you can see it is oval. Maarten Baas worked with chef Sergio Herman for a pop-up restaurant during the Dutch Design Week a few years ago, and he designed an already well-known plate in the shape of a face. Sergio Herman worked together with Cor Unum again for creating the ceramics for his new restaurant Blueness where Japanse cuisine meets the best ingredients of Zeeland. You can buy the plates here. And if you look closely, you can see the horizon on it that stands for the horizon of the coast of Zeeland.
