Mitral valve repair and mitral valve replacement are procedures that may be performed to treat diseases of the mitral valve, the valve located between the left heart chambers (left atrium and left ventricle). Several types of mitral valve disease exist. In mitral valve regurgitation, the flaps (leaflets) of the mitral valve don't close tightly, causing blood to leak backward into the left atrium. This commonly occurs due to valve leaflets bulging back a condition called mitral valve prolapse. In another condition, called mitral valve stenosis, the leaflets become thick or stiff, and they may fuse together. This results in a narrowed valve opening and reduced blood flow through the valve. Treatment for mitral valve disease depends on the severity of the condition. Surgeons may recommend surgery to repair or replace mitral valves for some people with mitral valve disease. August 28 marked 7 years since my mitral valve repair surgery. The valve continues to work well, but I do have an enlarged left atrial chamber (due to when too much blood was going the wrong way through the valve) which increases my risk of afib and stroke, increased risk of endocarditis due to the tech holding my valve together, scar tissue on my right lung from the pleural effusion I experienced a month after surgery…AND I have a genetic condition that gives me a higher likelihood of super scary blood clots. Vaccination and mask wearing were never a choice I really had the luxury of making in the negative. I could never pretend to question medical wisdom on the grounds of politics, conspiracy theories, thought exercises, or heady principles disconnected from reality. I could never pretend that following safety protocols was any sort of infringement on my liberty or religious freedom. I will get a booster shot as soon as possible. I will continue to wear a mask in public indoor settings. I will continue to believe scientists and healthcare workers. I will NOT be cavalier with my precious life and health, nor with that of others. Yes, I am angry. I am also alive, and thankful to be so.
