Leafy mitrewort (Mitella Caulescens) is a very easy wildflower to overlook. Small and green, it disappears against the backdrop of other spring plants growing in the low elevation forests of Mount Rainier. However, once you know to look for it, its unique petals, tipped with feathery, antenna-like lobes, are unmistakable. Flowers grow along a short stalk, 6-12 in. tall, and bloom from the top down as the season progresses. It has maple-shaped leaves and is the only mitrewort species with a few leaves along the stem.

In addition to leafy mitrewort, other forest wildflowers are starting to bloom including Cascade Oregon-grape, kinnikinnick, and salmonberry. Subalpine meadows are still covered in snow. What wildflowers are you observing in the park?

I'd like to plant native plants in them, but my fiance's family would definitely prefer showy nonnatives like geraniums and petunias. Do you have any ideas of long-lasting (not ephemeral like camas - I grow those in a meadow format, but I wouldn't use them in a pot) and showy (absolutely no fringecup or piggy-back plant lol) native flowers for partly-shaded to full sun pots?

You can grow achillea millefolium, or any kind of lupine potentially. Achillea might not be showy enough, but they at least have a long bloom time. Big leaf lupine have very showy purple flowers and cute palmate leaves year round. Irix tenax is a native iris that's very showy. Western columbine (Aquilegia formosa) is also pretty popular everywhere. Lonicera hispidula is pink honeysuckle, which is a vine you can train and it keeps it's leaves year-round. Lonicera ciliosa has more flowers but is deciduous in winter time, so its vine just look like dead sticks till spring. Both big hummingbird plants. You can have beach strawberry around anything else you grow too, to help keep weeds down. Granted I've never tried planting any of these in containers so I have no idea how they do. (except achillea can probably do whatever it wants to be honest, it doesnt care hahaha)

If you have bigger containers you can mess with small shrubs but I just stuck with forbs here since you mentioned looking for alternatives to petunias and such.

Every once in a while I go searching up information on commercially available native plants that I’ve passed over in the past due to their inedibility/toxicity. Just to confirm that indeed they are not edible and that they may be pretty, but if I can’t eat them, then they’re just taking up space that could be used by something pretty that I can eat. And every once in a while I do find an obscure source that in fact they do have an edible use! So I found today with Clematis ligusticifolia (Virgin’s bower). Way back when, people used the dried leaves as a black pepper substitute to flavour foods! Mind, consuming too much C. ligusticifolia will make you bleed internally. It’s only just barely edible as a flavouring. But then an excess of saffron will poison you too, as will eating too many ginkgo nuts. So there you go. It counts. Which means I get to add a clematis species to my garden and I thought I wouldn’t be able to. :)

Now, if I could find any edible uses for culver’s root, bloodroot, Canada anemone, pink turtlehead, lobelia, blue wild indigo, cardinal flower, trumpet vine, dutchman’s breeches, red baneberry, doll’s eyes, mitrewort, dutchman’s pipe, shooting star, beardtongue, Jacob’s ladder, crocus, delphinium, blue virgin’s bower...

Heartleaf foamflower (Tiarella cordifolia) is a gorgeous, clump-forming perennial in the saxifrage family, which includes alumroot (such as coral bells) and mitrewort. The plant spreads rapidly via branching rhizomes and forms dense colonies in shady, moist deciduous forests. Foamflower’s delicate white flowers grow in terminal clusters at the ends of flowering stalks from late April through May. While the flowers are quite attractive, the plant’s luxuriant, velvety foliage is even more so - it makes for a striking ground cover in shade gardens. This week’s medicinal plant is Valeriana officinalis. I really like how it puts me into a very restful and deep sleep. I took a teabag to work so everyone could smell the unique aroma. My favourite is Dr. Stuart’s.

This was a fun and varied week. Monday, with incessant drizzle, I cut a new edge to some grass, making it look much better. There is a dip in the level, which gives the appearance of an indent, which I measured several times to ensure it is in fact parallel to a nearby edge.

Tuesday I had my first go at building supports for some of the larger plants, to prevent them toppling over under their own weight and ensure the best show possible of the impending blooms.

Wednesday was my office day. In the morning, during my glasshouse time, I planted some Marsilea quadrifolia, an aquatic fern, along the edge of one of the ponds in the fernery. I’m hoping it takes off quickly. I think it will look great.

This week Joe announced he will be leaving the garden at the end of June to do some travelling and working in Australia for a year. Whilst this will be an amazing opportunity for him, we will miss him.
