I’M DONE WITH CHAPTER ONE.

Shapeshift - Chapter 1

Twig had only arrived in Common recently, but he already has a goal and he knows exactly what he’s in Common for. At least, he thinks that he knows. It’s kind of hazy. Something about a cat and seeking out a person? He doesn’t truly know. He knows the basics.

What he does know is that seeing two people chasing a pale blue cat through the street isn’t exactly normal. Especially not when it has a key around its neck. What kind of town…?

“Oi! Why the hell are you chasing that cat?!” Aaaand that was a mistake. The cat pauses, before running towards him. “Wh- huh?”

Oh dear. Now the two people are facing him. “Listen, we don’t want trouble. Give us the cat.”

The cat hisses, hiding behind Twig’s legs with a lashing tail. Seeing this reaction, he shakes his head.

“Leave the poor thing alone. You’re scaring it.”

The taller one, a pale woman with long, curly hair, crosses her arms and raises an eyebrow. “Then give us the key.”

“No! Whoever put this key on them doesn’t want it taken.”

“You’re not from Common, are you? Just give us the key and we’ll leave you be.”

“No thanks. I said no, what, three times now?”

He scoops the cat up, and runs off, holding it close. He ends up with a few claw marks to the face, but he doesn’t drop it, nor does he stop running, not until he’s certain that he’s lost them.

The moment he knows that he’s lost them, he flops against the nearest building and sets the cat down gently. The cat stares at him for a moment before running off, but he doesn’t chase it, he just watches it go with a soft smile.

When Mourning stops running, she’s made it back to their house. He stares down at his paws, before shapeshifting back into her regular form. They take the key off their neck and enter the house, making sure to lock the door behind her before flopping down on the couch.

“That demidog was… interesting.”

Skinny Rats, attraversare il tempo con la musica

Direttamente dagli anni ’90. Da quella decade arriva la musica delle Skinny Rats. Da tutti gli anni ’90, ossia non c’è un genere principale. Le nostre, perché di band femminile si parla, attraversano il decennio del grunge lasciandosi attaccare addosso tutto il panorama musicale di quegli anni. Dal nascente punk rock dei Green Day di Dookie o dei Bad Religion, passando per l’alternative garage di Screaming Trees, Pixies e Modhoney, senza tralasciare band come Spin Doctor e, ovviamente, il Seattle sound.

Un Melting pot di influenze che va a creare una miscela originale e perfettamente amalgamata. Ogni brano del loro Calm your ego down fa storia a sé. Il turbinio di richiami si comporta come i vetri di un caleidoscopio. A seconda di come viene girato mostra forme e colori diversi. Per le Skinny rats è la medesima situazione. I brani si alternano e si perdono ora su fraseggi punk rock, ora su reminiscenze acustiche, poi il basso domina con ritmi percussivi. Le stesse atmosfere, quindi, mutano di conseguenza. Si alternano brani aperti e diretti ad altri più claustrofobici e arzigogolati.

Dà avvio alle polveri Asteroids. La base è punk, ma il levare della batteria, il ritornello assassino ne fanno un brano molto diretto e non così pesante. Potremmo chiamare in causa i migliori No Doubt per dare un’idea dell’andamento. Molto azzeccato il break centrale dal sapore psischedelico. Una delle due chitarre si tacca dalla ritmica per dedicarsi all’iterazione di un breve riff dilatato, riverberato. Cambia anche il cantato. Si fa più lungo, meno ritmato. Il tutto per descrivere il nostro asteroide che si sta per schiantare. Il brano chiude in crescendo su una cavalcata elettrica con finale affidato a poche note di synth. La seguente Drama Queens mostra ancora l’ottima capacità di songwriting della band. Il brano parte diretto, potente, per poi rallentare ed alleggerirsi sulla strofa. È il basso a dare i tempi. Percosso, accompagna la voce non urlata. Il brano esplode letteralmente dal ritornello al bridge.

Una deflagrazione nel vero senso della parola che non si arresterà fino alla fine. Anzi. Si acuiranno le conseguenze grazie a diversi stop ang go. Menzione al basso che caratterizza ottimamente tutto il brano con lineee non scontate. Si prosegue con i Believe. Una malinconica semi ballad elettrica scura, intrisa di dubbio. Anche in questo caso la canzone non si dipana per una ola strada. Dopo un inizio lento, senza distorsione, si apre a lidi più potente e inquietanti. A sottolinearlo sono anche le chitarre che richiamano riff stule Marilyn Manson. Ma le soprese non di fermano neppure sul finale. Cambiano le atmosfere con Sumi. È come se i The Cure avessero incontrato i Blink182.

Il basso è quello della band di Robert Smith, mentre i riff di chitarra sono quelli del terzetto punk. Il tutto, miscelato, offre uno spaccato del tutto inedito. Ottima la prova della voce che sa adattarsi ad ogni contesto senza sforzo. Inizia in acustico Basedown, la composizione successiva. Arpeggio crunch, seconda chitarra in accompagnamento ritmico leggero. Tutto a creare una tensione che si apre nel ritornello. Ancora una volta è il basso a dare man forte ad una canzone già di per sé convincente. Il quattro corde offre quella marcia in più che la fa decollare. Così come una marcia in più la conferisce il break a circa ¾. Inatteso e quindi azzeccato. La sezione ritmica apre le danze per la successiva

Chinacena. Il richiamo è assolutamente funky, pur se con chitarra leggermente distorta. Si alternano attimi ultraritmati cone batteria in controtempo, con momenti diretti, dai ritornelli aperti e punkeggianti. Grazie allo special è uno dei brani che meglio rappresentano il decennio indicato in apertura. Su direttive più punk rock Teddy Bear. Diretta, saltellante, orecchiabile. Ma non per questa scevra di cambi. A metà circa, special di solo basso e voce che apre al ritornello e porta al finale. Il disco chiude con disaster. Il brano forse più heavy dell’intero cd. Heavy sempre inteso nall’accezione ’90. Si possono sentire reminiscenze di L7, Bikini Kills e via ricordando.

In conclusione: un disco ottimo quello delle Skinny Rats. Non tecnico in senso stretto, ma con un songwriting notevole. Le capacità della band emergono nei cambi repentini, nelle variazioni di atmosfera che caratterizzano ogni singolo brano. Tutto ciò con l’incredibile capacità di mantenere leggerezza e immediatezza. Un disco dai richiami precisi, ma non per questo scontato o che sa di già sentito. La band riesce a far emergere carattere e capacità. Consigliato agli amanti della melodia, da una parte, e a chi cerca soluzioni non scontate, dall’altra.

Hey everyone! So according to the poll, it seems like everyone (current members and nonmembers alike) wanted to see the group moved to Discord. So, starting from today, we will be leaving the Skype group behind and moving to our shiny new Discord server!! (Courtesy of ModShy who is a good tech coyote). The ID for the server will be available in the Skype group for at least a week (the invites will be re-sent as they become inactive) and for any new members who apply they will receive the invite from either a mod or an admin via Discord or Tumblr IM.
