Mokuula Restoration Update
Digging Up The Past: A sacred Hawaiian site remains buried under mud and bureaucracy—but one group is working tirelessly to uncover it
Shirley Kaha'i gets very upset when people say the preservation project at Moku'ula is taking too long. Sitting behind her desk in the modest Friends of Moku'ula offices at 505 Front Street, the executive director gestures to her bookshelf. "Look at all these binders, these reports and these volumes of papers. We are here every day moving the project forward." Kaha'i admits the process can be discouraging, but wading through red tape takes time. "The last three years my focus has been to get activity out there," says Kaha'i. "It took 18 months to get permission from the burial council."
The project, restoration of the ancient island of Moku'ula and the surrounding wetlands, was set in motion more than 20 years ago when Friends of Moku'ula founder Akoni Akana was encouraged by Mike White of Kaanapali Beach Hotel (now a County Councilmember) to do something about the almost-forgotten historical site. A BIG DEAL REVEALED ON “VOICES OF TRUTH - ONE-ON-ONE WITH HAWAI`IʻS FUTURE"
youtube
"Moku`ula - A Visit With Ke`eaumoku Kapu"
Lying hidden under a parking lot and baseball field in the historic town of Lahaina, Maui is Moku`ula, a place revered since ancient times. It was not only the private residence of King Kamehameha III and a burial site of several Hawaiian royals, but most importantly it served as the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom until 1845. When we heard of plans to restore Moku`ula to its former glory, we met up with Ke`eaumoku Kapu to get a tour and full story. Donʻt miss our amazing visit with Ke`eaumoku as he explains why Moku`ula still remains so significant and how todayʻs Maui Aha Moku Council perpetuates the very same systems used there in the days of old - Watch It Here

"Village Of Old Hawai`i - A Visit With Alohalani Smith"
Once a thriving village in old Hawai`i, Kaupo today is a sparsely populated remote district on Maui with a sustainable ranching community. Thatʻs where we met Alohalani Smith who told us of her exciting plans to revive and recreate ancient Kaupo. Deeply connected to the area, she filled us in on both the ancient as well as modern history of Kaupo which included dangerous fires and earthquakes. Donʻt miss our visit with Alohalani as she paints a vivid and fascinating picture of what this very special village once was and will be again - Watch It Here
