When Squirrelflight’s kits are born, Hollyleaf is thrilled for all of two heartbeats.

The dark red kit is strong-looking, big like his father; the molly with a pelt of flame squirms across the former’s back, mewling as loudly as her little lungs can manage in the dim light of the nursery. But then there’s the remaining two: a pale, pale ginger who’s little more than a scrap of fur and a dark tabby who looks more dead than alive. Hollyleaf’s ears pin back at the sight, thinking desperately about the injustice of it all — how fair was it, to have Squirrelflight’s first litter spend half their lives hating her, and then for two of her second litter to die?

When she meets Squirrelflight’s gaze, she sees a similar thought reflected back: my kits are dying, and there’s nothing I can do. “Alderkit, Sparkkit, Dandelionkit, and Juniperkit,” she says instead, brushing her tail over each one. If there’s hesitation as she indicates the latter two, Hollyleaf doesn’t comment; instead, she huddles close to her mother and stares desperately down at the too-small, too-weak kits.

“They won’t die,” Hollyleaf says without thinking.

“Don’t make promises you can’t keep,” Squirrelflight whispers.

“They can’t—” Hollyleaf’s voice breaks off. Jayfeather and Leafpool are gone; Squirrelflight’s kits had been born too early and too late all at the same moment. Squirrelflight had begun kitting nearly a quarter moon early and soon after the medics had left for the Moonpool — unexpected on every count. Hollyleaf, standing in for her mother as deputy, had sent Rosepetal, Molewhisker, and even Sandstorm — the fastest cat of her generation, and still quick on her paws seasons past — barrelling toward the Moonpool, but the journey was far and their paws, while swift, were not swift enough for the birth. Or the aftermath.

Hollyleaf and Brightheart, with what little healer’s training they possessed, had done their best; but Juniperkit was barely moving, even with tongues grooming his fur the wrong way and every chewed-up herb the two she-cats could think of placed on his tiny pink tongue. StarClan, please, Hollyleaf prays as she stares at the herbs and dried berries at her paws. I know I have done everything wrong. But Squirrelflight does not deserve this unkindness. Help me! I’m begging you!

Honestly I find it kinda funny how Cherryfall and Molewhisker plotting to hurt the dark forest trainees by setting a trap that could’ve easily killed them in Dovewing’s Silence is completely ignored. Like, you’d think the knowledge that two apprentices nearly killed their clanmates out of spite would be a kind of a big deal. And it would be something at least mentioned if not held over their heads in the future. But no. Bramblestar- who may I remind you was also a dark forest trainee but just at a different time- is pretty okay with all this. Even assigning them to train his kids Alderpaw and Sparkpaw later down the line

Was re-reading The Apprentice’s Quest for the last word stuff, and I realized something.

Jayfeather started off his training as a warrior apprentice but had to change to a medicine cat. He was great at it, however it was horrible knowing-- and being told by basically everyone except for his siblings-- that he could never be a warrior. 

So I wonder how he felt when Alderpaw, his (new at the time) apprentice and brother was forced to become a medicine cat. I wonder how he felt when Alderpaw begged Bramblestar not to make him a medicine cat because he thought it was only because he wasn’t good enough to be a warrior 

Just look at these two parts of the scene when Alderpaw hears the news:

berrynose, hazeltail and mousewhisker all have heavy southern accents. rosepetal and toadstep have southern accents too, and they were especially prominent in their kithood, but they become less thick as they grew. cherryfall and molewhisker were the same, but they lost their accents as they grew up.

all of the cats raised by daisy, however, picked up on some southern slang. “bless your heart, pretty/purdy as a peach, madder than a wet hen, over yonder, well i’ll be!, i reckon, etc”

cats like jayfeather, icecloud, alderheart and ivypool don’t use this slang in their everyday lives, but sometimes they’ll be caught off guard and something will slip out subconsciously that reminds everyone of daisy’s presence in the nursery
