No, the dog isn’t called Spot. The dog is called Darcy, but can you spot her hiding in this picture? She's there, I promise, closer than you think, my salt n’pepper grey miniature schnauzer with just a tiny hint of pink of her coat visible as well. This is Chee Dale, off the Monsal Trail, in the Peak District, always a nice little adventure that not so many people seem to know about. Indeed it was deserted this afternoon: just Darcy and I and the wildlife. Following the River Wye up into a gorge it becomes more and more interesting as you go on. There are lots of trees, many with a dusting of snow still sitting on branches, and in the darker part of the gorge many trees are covered in thick moss. Eventually the gorge closes in on both sides, with overhanging cliffs above you on the right. At weekends it often has climbers on it. Not today. But today there were still clusters of quite big icicles dangling down from the cliff and plenty of evidence they had been falling. That’s probably why there weren’t any climbers! So I took care to skirt round the drop zone, not wanting one of them to fall and pierce my skull! I'm not sure what a solid icicle, one and a half feet long does, when it falls vertically onto a human from a significant height, but I really don’t want to find out. My imagination can supply many bloody scenarios. The light was lousy, but having photographed some clusters of icicles (not very successfully) on the rock face above, and from a safe angle, I carried on my way to where the gorge side really closes in so that the only way upstream is on a long snake of stepping stones in the river that go round the base of the cliff where it rises out of the river. You always have to watch your step as you cross the stones, but today some had a bit of snow and ice on them so I was taking extra care looking down to where I was placing my feet. Suddenly a cluster of large icicles flashed past my face like a pointed portcullis, just inches out from my nose, exploding on the stepping stone by my foot. I must have leapt a mile in shock!! How high it came from I don't know. It was so close….almost literally giving me a close shave with the icicle tips like daggers striking downwards. It’s not a long walk round Chee Dale but it normally throws up some sort of surprise, even on a dull day. We all need surprises, so next time you’re in the area, check it out!
