StormBreaker Brewing releases a Mexican Dark Lager for those non-Dry-January types. Get to know Permission To Land!
image courtesy StormBreaker Brewing Press Release PORTLAND, Ore … StormBreaker Brewing, the award-winning Portland, OR brewery, has announced a new Mexican Dark Lager called Permission To Land to kick off the new year.  Permission to Land builds off of the success the brewery has seen the past several years with releasing dark beers in the early part of the year. “It’s definitely the season for people to gravitate towards darker beers,” commented Rob Lutz, StormBreaker Brewing’s brewmaster and co-owner. “Like a lot of breweries, we see more demand for darker beers at this time every year, because the weather and general mood calls for them. But we wanted to give the option for those customers to get the dark beer experience with a lighter body - which for a lot of people is a big selling point after an indulgent holiday stretch.” Permission To Land carries a 4.8% ABV and 14 IBUs, making it light and easy to drink despite its darker appearance. StormBreaker utilized Czech Saaz, New Zealand Motueka, and Hallertau Mittelfruh hops in producing the beer. The mix of ingredients allows for the lower-ABV dark beer to carry the flavor and expectations of a rich ‘winter’ beer with the drinkability of something you may drink just as easily at the beach in July.  “We used Vienna and Munich malts to provide a really rich malt character,” explained Lutz. “The final product is a nicely balanced beer with a touch of roasty goodness that is incredibly easy to drink.” Permission To Land will be available on draft and in cans to-go at all StormBreaker locations: Mississippi Ave., St. John’s, and the Beer Cart at The Yard in Montavilla.  Find StormBreaker on social media: @stormbreakerbrewing and facebook.com/stormbreakerbrewing. About StormBreaker Brewing  StormBreaker Brewing is an award-winning craft brewery co-founded in Portland, Oregon by Dan Malech and Rob Lutz in 2014. The brewery focuses on a wide range of craft beer and specialty craft cocktails and mocktails in two distinct locations, and strives to constantly produce innovative and high quality offerings. And don’t forget about the StormerBreaker Beer Cart located inside The Yard at Montavilla at NE 82nd and Davis, serving up beer, wine, cider and cocktails available onsite or to go. I live in Montavilla, a neighborhood of Portland, OR which has gotten some bad press recently so I would like to counter that with a pictorial essay of why I live here.
While little libraries have been around awhile and we have many, we also have a back porch food pantry, a dog oasis and now a tiny seed bank along with a place to put your real air mail, at least one person jazzed about shark week and someone concerned about found ducks.
Montavilla Rocks!

Ahead of the state's 161st birthday, Montavilla Brew Works releases Lovin’ Oregon in collaboration with Heart in Oregon.
Press Release
Tumblr media
PORTLAND, Ore.—Feb. 11, 2021—Montavilla Brew Works (MBW) has announced the canning of a new West Coast IPA that celebrates living in Oregon and coincides with the state’s 161st birthday. Lovin’ Oregon was brewed in collaboration with Heart in Oregon, a Portland company whose sticker featuring a green heart in the center of the state is ubiquitous in the Northwest. Lovin’ Oregon is a West Coast IPA brewed with pilsner and pale malts that support a medium-light body, easy drinkability and a dry finish. Falconer’s Flight hops impart tropical and fruity flavors while maintaining a restrained yet suitable bitterness. This IPA is dry hopped with Citra and Strata hops with aromas of grapefruit, lime, tropical fruit and dank herb. The beer comes in at 6.5% ABV. “This collaboration between MBW and Heart in Oregon is what makes this job so rewarding,” said Michael Kora, MBW founder and head brewer. “We’ve always enjoyed partnering with other local businesses that share our vision of keeping things local, serving the community, and supporting each other in good times and bad. 2020 was an incredibly challenging year, particularly for small businesses like ours that had to pivot their business model to accommodate Covid-related safety protocols. It made sense to collaborate with Heart in Oregon, not only to celebrate Oregon’s 161st birthday but to celebrate surviving 2020 in the resilient state we live in.” Chris Bucci, the founder of Heart in Oregon, explained that since February 14 is both Valentine's Day and Oregon’s statehood birthday, he’s been looking for partnerships with Oregon-based companies whose products are a natural fit for release on that date. “Teaming up with MBW made perfect sense—both our companies are headquartered in Portland's Montavilla neighborhood and Michael and I both live nearby. And after the year we’ve all experienced, we’re excited to share a beer with our fellow Oregonians." Added Kora, “What’s exciting about this collaboration is that everyone recognizes Chris’ stickers—they’re everywhere, from vehicle bumpers to beer kegerators to bicycle helmets. Seeing his popular image on our cans of IPA and distributing them across the state is a real treat for us and reminds us of how fortunate we are to be in Oregon.” Oregon’s official birthday is February 14, but one-off IPA Lovin’ Oregon will be available starting today until supplies run out. Prepay and pickup or home delivery orders can be placed online with touchless transactions available at the brewery.

By only three votes, Baerlic Brewing's Punk Rock IPA named Best Oregon-Brewed IPA by Hawthorne Hophouse.
Press Release
Tumblr media
Every January, The Hawthorne Hophouse holds their Annual IPA Challenge to determine the Best Oregon-Brewed IPA as voted on by over 1,000 of their customers in a blind flight tasting. Out of the 12 Oregon-brewed IPAs in the Challenge—narrowed down from 36 in December—our Punk Rock Time IPA was voted Best IPA by just 3 votes!  "To think that PRT stood out among those 12 beers in a blind tasting—where the consumer doesn't know the beer or the brewery—makes us really proud. It's so great to get that level of feedback based not our size or popularity or marketing budget, but on the quality of the beer itself. As a small brewery, this is really meaningful to have stood out as the crowd favorite on a list of what we consider some of the most foundational IPAs in Oregon—if not the country!"- Ben Parsons, Baerlic Brewing Co.
This year's Competition included past IPA Challenge winners Breakside Wanderlust, Barley Brown's Pallet Jack, and Migration Straight Outta Portland, as well as Von Ebert, Pfriem, Ecliptic, Sun River, Ferment, Montavilla, Ex Novo and Level. Thanks to all of these breweries for making some of the best IPAs available and for all the liquid inspiration over the years! ABOUT THE BEER: Punk Rock Time IPA is brewed with Weyermann malts and Oregon grown Strata hops from Indie Hops and Amarillo and Chinook from Crosby—tropical, fruity and piney IPA with just enough angst to keep us determined. “This is not the time to be dismayed, this is punk rock time. This is what Joe Strummer trained you for.” – Henry Rollins. Punk Rock Time IPA is a past winner of medals in the 2019 Best of Craft Beer Awards and the 2019 Oregon Beer Awards and is available in 16oz cans and draft in Oregon and southwest Washington.

Introducing Frosted Flakes IPA. A fun collaboration from Oregon breweries, Coin Toss & Montavilla.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Press Release
OREGON CITY, Ore./PORTLAND, Ore. … Back by popular demand after a three-year hiatus, Catch A Tiger IPA is on the prowl once again. A collaboration between Montavilla Brew Works and Coin Toss Brewing, this limited-run IPA is brewed with 30 pounds of frosted flakes cereal, an innovation inspired by a shared history between the two brewery owners.
The mutual Michigan roots of brewer owners Tim Hohl of Coin Toss and Michael Kora of Montavilla Brew Works, combined with their love of the Detroit Tigers (not to mention the home state of a certain breakfast cereal manufacturer) sparked this creative collab, which they brewed for the first time in 2016. Now returning for the first time since 2018, Catch A Tiger IPA will be available this Thursday, May 27, at both Montavilla Brew Works in Portland and Coin Toss Brewing in Oregon City on tap and—for the first time—in 16 oz. cans.
“Michael and I figured this would be a fun one-off back when we first thought it up,” said Tim Hohl. “It was a wink and a nod to Michigan’s own craft beer scene, but we didn’t know it’d be worth repeating. Here we are, five years later, and it’s as popular as ever.”
“As brewers, we have this opportunity to create something that makes people smile—and it’s hard not to smile when you’re ordering a frosted flake beer,” mused Michael Kora.
The cereal is mashed with Pilsner, Vienna and Munich malts, while Lotus, Chinook, Idaho 7 and Simcoe hops provide citrus and pine aromas and a bitter bite. At 7.4% ABV and an IBU of 70, this tiger is a hefty beast. Catch A Tiger was brewed and packaged at Montavilla Brew Works in Southeast Portland.
Hohl and Kora would both like to give a shout-out to Dan Mills, owner of Grocery Outlet in Oregon City, who provided the not-so-secret frosted ingredient.
About Coin Toss Brewing  Coin Toss Brewing, based in Oregon City, offers a variety of signature brews available by the pint, crowler, growler, or keg. The company is committed to crafting the finest beers in honor of Beervana's illustrious history. The Coin Toss moniker is a nod to the fateful event that determined the city of Portland's name. Although pioneer Asa Lovejoy (from Boston, Mass.) may have lost the historic coin toss to Francis Pettygrove (of Portland, Maine), the brewery would like to reach back through the years and tell him: Heads or tails? It's beer, you win! Learn more at CoinTossBrewing.com and on social media @CoinTossBrewing.

Montavilla Brew Works (MBW) releases three draft-exclusives, in cans, including Bipartisan Coffee Porter
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Press Release
PORTLAND, Ore. … Montavilla Brew Works (MBW) has announced the canning of several long-established brands that previously were only available on draft. Just in time for the fall season, the brewery will be selling three seasonals throughout Oregon in 16-ounce four-packs: Stratamacue Fresh Hop IPA, Red Krush Northwest Red Ale, and Bipartisan Coffee Porter. MBW’s fifth anniversary beer, Lil’ More Righteous ISA, was also re-brewed with a limited number of cans available at the brewery only.
“We’re excited to release some of our more popular brands that our customers have been missing on draft,” said Michael Kora, MBW founder and head brewer. “While we sorely miss our friends who want to drink beer on premise, our ability to switch gears to a wholesale and to-go operation has been very successful for the long-term growth of the brewery. We are reaching thousands more beer drinkers now through the growth of wholesale and grocery account partnerships––including Green Zebra, Market of Choice, New Seasons, and Grocery Outlet––along with many fine taprooms and bottle shops in the Portland Metro area and along the Oregon Coast.”
Stratamacue Fresh Hop IPA is brewed with over 80 pounds of fresh, dank and fruity Strata hops from Goschie Farms and Indie Hops, then dry hopped with Galaxy and Citra hops that impart a massive passionfruit and citrus aroma. Stratamacue commemorates Kora’s past profession as a drummer and is dedicated to drummers everywhere (#38 Single Ratamacue is an essential drum rudiment).
Red Krush is a Northwest Red Ale that has been a taproom staple since 2015. Orange citrus hop flavors intertwine with a malty, bittersweet chocolate body that’s balanced by aromas of spice, dank herb, and fresh pine.
Bipartisan Porter is a Coffee Porter collaboration with Water Avenue Coffee and MBW’s neighbor, Bipartisan Café. Whole, green coffee beans were aged in Pinot noir wine barrels, then roasted, ground, and cold brewed. The cold-brewed coffee was then blended with MBW’s Robust Porter for a flavorful fusion of chocolate, Concord grapes, coffee, and subtle vanilla.
Since the arrival of the pandemic, MBW has been holding fast to the beer-to-go model with great success. When phase one of the state-mandated shutdown was announced, the entire MBW team unanimously agreed to forgo on-site consumption. According to Kora, “As painful as that decision was, it was important to give our staff time to acclimate to a new way of doing business while keeping them and our customers safe. With a very limited staff now, I’m very proud of the extra effort, initiative, and ‘can do’ spirit that our team has embodied. We look forward to the day when drinking a pint at the taproom and leaving with a four-pack of IPA is a reality. Until then, we are doing what we feel is best for us, our community, and our dear friends––our customers.”
Prepay and pickup orders can be placed through MBW’s online store at https://montavillabrew.square.site; the brewery also offers free next day home delivery. Wholesale account orders can be placed by contacting MBW sales staff at [email protected] or by calling 503-954-3440.

Portland's Holiday Ale Festival returns November 28th - December 2nd
Press Release
PORTLAND, Ore. ... The 23rd annual Holiday Ale Festival will take place Nov. 28 through Dec. 2 at Pioneer Courthouse Square, located at 701 SW Sixth Ave. in downtown Portland. The Northwest’s longest-running outdoor winter beer festival – which is tented and heated – will feature 54 craft beers, ciders and meads in the main lineup. Participating breweries and cideries have committed to serving a product that has either been made or blended specifically for the event or is a rare or vintage product that isn't commonly tapped in the state.    In addition, the festival will also feature dozens of specialty and rare beer tappings, and a number of Meet the Brewer events. The Holiday Ale Festival is highly regarded as presenting one of best lineups of winter beers and ciders anywhere in the nation.
“Heated clear top tents in the center of downtown, with the city's lighted holiday tree towering over the fest like a beacon for good beer, set the scene for this festival,” explained Festival Manager Preston Weesner. "But what really sets it apart are the brewers and their commitment to their fans with the products they choose to make. This festival is an opportunity for the brewers to be all in on the creative factor and throw down something really special to share."
This year’s participating breweries include 2 Towns Ciderhouse, Ascendant Beer Co., Bauman's Cider Co., Bear Republic Brewing Co., Coalition, Collaborator (Oregon Brew Crew/Widmer), Crooked Stave Brewing, Crux Fermentation Project, Deschutes Brewery, Drake's Brewing Co., Ecliptic Brewing, Eel River Brewing Co., Elysian Brewing Co., Firestone Walker Brewing Co., Fort George Brewery, Fremont Brewing, Georgetown Brewing Co., Gigantic, Golden Valley Brewery, Great Notion Brewing, Hopworks Urban Brewery, Klamath Basin Brewing Co., Lagunitas Brewing Co., Laurelwood Brewing Co., Lompoc Brewing, MadCow Brewing Co., McMenamins Edgefield Brewery, Migration Brewing Co., Monkless Belgian Ales, Montavilla Brew Works, Nectar Creek, Ninkasi Brewing Co., Oakshire Brewing, Old Town Brewing, Ordnance Brewing, Pelican Brewing Co., pFriem Family Brewers, Portland Cider Co., Reverend Nat's Hard Cider, RiverBend Brewing, Rusty Truck Brewing Co., Shattered Oak Brewing, Stickmen Brewing Co., StormBreaker Brewing, Stoup Brewing, Sunriver Brewing Co., Three Mugs Brewing Co., Upright Brewing, Vanguard Brewing Co., Vertigo Brewing,, Wandering Aengus Ciderworks/Anthem Cider, Widmer Brothers Brewing, Wild Barrel Brewing, and Wolf Tree Brewery.  Despite being held outdoors during one of the coldest months of the year, more than 14,000 festival attendees stay dry throughout the five-day festival under clear-topped tents warmed by gas heaters. A second level above the main floor, dubbed the Sky Bar, serves additional taps and provides ample elbow room for attendees to relax, spread out and even peek at the revelers below.   To enter and consume beer, the purchase of an entry package is required. Advance general admission costs $40 and includes the 2018 tasting vessel – a flexible BPA & BPS-free polymer Govino “glass” – and 15 taster tickets, plus expedited entry all five days with the ticket. General admission at the door is the same price but includes only 12 tickets and no expedited entry. Advance VIP packages cost $100 and include the tasting glass, 30 taster tickets, special VIP beer lines with little to no waiting, exclusive VIP only vintage beers, bottled water, and express entry all five days. VIP tickets are limited to 200 and are not available at the door. All advance packages will go on sale in late September at www.holidayale.com.   Once inside the festival, a full pour costs four tickets, and a taster costs one ticket. Certain limited release and special tappings may not be available in full pours or may cost extra tickets. Additional taster tickets can be purchased for $1 apiece. Previous years’ mugs or glasses will not be filled. Express re-entry requires a wristband and the 2018 tasting glass and is subject to the festival's capacity.
An onsite coat and bag check and the Crater Lake Soda Garden raises funds for the Children’s Cancer Association MyMusicRx Program, which delivers the healing power of music to the bedsides of children and teens facing cancer and other serious illnesses. The Holiday Ale Festival doubles and matches all monies raised.   The festival offers several food options, including food from Urban German and roasted nuts from Family Nut Love. To avoid lengthy lines, the festival encourages patrons to attend Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. Event hours are 11am to 9pm Wednesday through Saturday, and 11am to 5pm Sunday. The Holiday Ale Festival is for ages 21 and over.

Over 50 breweries to be featured for this year's Cheers to Belgian Beers. Doors open June 1st & June 2nd
Press Release
PORTLAND, Ore. (May 15, 2018) – The Cheers to Belgian Beers festival, which showcases Belgian-style beers brewed by Oregon craft brewers, has announced the initial brewery and beer lineup for this year’s event. The 12th annual festival will take place June 1 and June 2 at The North Warehouse at 723 N. Tillamook St. Hours are 1pm to 9pm on Friday and 12pm to 8pm on Saturday.
Fifty Oregon breweries have submitted their beers to date; another two dozen are expected to take part in the event. The current lineup includes Alameda, Ambacht, Ancestry, Back Pedal, Base Camp, Bent Shovel, Breakside, Coalition, Deep Space, Deschutes PDX, Fort George, G-Man, Golden Valley, Ground Breaker, Hopworks Urban, Immersion, Laurelwood, Leikam, Level Beer, Little Beast, Logsdon, Lucky Lab, MadCow, Max's Fanno Creek, Migration, Montavilla, Occidental, Old Market Pub, pFriem, PINTS, Portland, Rock Bottom, Royale, Salem Ale Works, Sasquatch, Scout, Second Profession, Sedition, Stickmen, StormBreaker, The Ram, Thunder Island, Vagabond, Wayfinder, Widmer, Wild Ride, Wolf Tree, Yachats, and Zoiglhaus.
...
What makes the Cheers to Belgian Beers festival unusual is that nearly every beer is made using the same primary yeast strain—Precious—a classic Belgian yeast that features a very mild phenolic character balanced with moderate fruitiness. This year, brewers were also given the option to add a secondary aging strain, Suburban Brett, a brettanomyces yeast that shines when used in wood barrels, producing complex and balanced aromas of sour cherry and dried fruit. To ensure diversity among the beers submitted—as well as show off the creativity of Oregon's craft brewers—the color and strength of each brewery’s beer was determined by a dart throw held earlier this year. Depending on where the dart landed on the board determined whether that brewery would brew a Belgian-style beer that was light or dark in color, with amber as the midpoint; and low or high in alcohol, with six percent being the midpoint. Breweries that hit a bullseye got to select their own color and strength.
Admission costs $20 for one souvenir beer goblet and eight drink tickets (only one glass and eight tickets will be sold to any one person at any one time). Tickets are on sale now at MercTickets (http://www.merctickets.com/events/54072643/cheers-to-belgian-beers). For a limited time, use code c2bb18 for an advance discount.
The festival is donating $1 from every ticket package sold to The House That Beer Built, a partnership between Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East and the local craft beer industry. This exciting new collaboration celebrates the strength and creativity of Oregon’s craft beer industry, along with its passion for community involvement. Participating breweries and businesses pledge to raise funds with the goal of collectively raising $75,000 to fully sponsor a home for a Portland family.  Learn more about Habitat’s work at Habitatportlandmetro.org.
