New zine! The 15-year anniversary issue of Basic Paper Airplane, where 20 writers, musicians, DJs, label owners, publishers, and comic artists tell stories of how cassette tapes have affected their lives, for better or worse.
Within: the art of the mixtape, the importance of the boombox, the intimacy of the Walkman. Plus tales of recording with cassettes, performing with cassettes, releasing cassettes, falling in love with cassettes. Nostalgia, subversion, frustration, possibility.
Contributions from: Andrew Barton, Ariel Birks, Karleigh Frisbie Brogan, Aaron Burch, Laura Daegling, Tim Devin, Fukumup, Aaron Gilbreath, Cynthia Carmina Gómez, Jack Lewis, Chask'e Lindgren, Pat Maley, Jason Martin, Sara Renberg, Kevin Sampsell, Gina Sarti, Christopher Sutton, Tucker Theodore, and Alexis Wolf. Cover art by Rachel Lee-Carman. Risograph-printed throughout by Whatnow Press.

Recently, I interviewed the performance artist Gabrielle Civil about her book Experiments in Joy, a book that asks: 'What can people do together that we can't do alone? What can we discover in ourselves only by way of other people?'
I often think about this: how much of what I love and what I've created is due to who I've spent time with, who I've worked with, who I've loved—the different ways I've collaborated on this project of being humans in the world. What have I discovered in myself by way of other people?

Title: Basic Paper Airplane: The Cassette Tape Issue
Author: Various
Edited by: Joshua James Amberson
Review:
I was hoping I’d get this one. I’ve been looking at the Basic Paper Airplane series for a while, wanting to read it but never quite getting around to actually ordering. Now I have one!
This zine is about cassettes: that technological innovation from the last century that still remains popular among collectors and DIY enthusiasts. My grandmother drove a car with a cassette player instead of a CD player. I think that mixtape she always listened to might still be in it, actually. Other than that, I don’t remember listening to music off of cassettes. Luckily for me, the contributors to this zine do. Each essay tells a little bit about cassettes, their role in different scenes, and the authors’ own memories of using them.
This is a zine for readers, for people who appreciate low-tech activities. I like the aesthetic here. I recommend this.

While Clayton is one of the most incisive commentators on the social politics of music today, he’s also a perpetually wide-eyed kid with headphones on; filled with the wonder and respect he hopes others will have for sound. Music is cultural history and political response, yes, but also first kisses and all-night dance parties. “The big labels want music to equal money,” he writes, “but as much as anything else, music is memory, as priceless and worthless as memory.”
Joshua James Amberson reviews Uproot by Jace Clayton.

FEEL-GOOD / Joshua James Amberson
He did not believe in gold friends. Or any of the supposed blessings that came from spending time with the same people for years upon years. Because the years had revealed to him one fact: The undue loyalty he had toward his old friends was his curse. He was a Taurus with just enough acceptance of astrology to have faith in his faults. A part of him liked the poetry of being able to say he'd been friends with these people—people he'd seen weekly, often daily—for over twenty years. But the reality bordered on awful. As soon as his life would appear to be changing, rearranging itself into pleasing new shapes, his old friends would appear and point to his previous versions. He would feel the layers of skin he thought he'd shed for good growing back, and he'd daydream of finding a job, a lover, a new group of friends in a city far away.
(In these cities there were boyfriends whose sheen wouldn't wear off; ones who would glow bright into the future. His friends had all married young, all divorced soon after, and seemed to no longer entertain fantasies of perfect love. He wondered if it was because the fantasy was ridiculous or if just his friends' relationships were ridiculous. His own romances offered few clues. There hadn't been many of them and all had been embarrassingly short—barely long enough be called relationships at all. All bore a vague similarity to texting from across the room; two people trying too hard and not trying hard enough.)
At night, he'd toss and turn trying to imagine a nice movie. The fact that he didn't even know what one would look like bothered him. To him, even supposedly feel-good movies—ones with talking animals, say—were tragic. He'd think of lines from folk songs to support this. Tracked in straw/attractive flames/you were the bird/chirping my name. “See?” he'd say to the dark. But the room would absorb the sound like a fence catching his throw. He knew redemption at the end wasn't enough to cancel out what had happened. Usually he'd manage a few hours of sleep, too little to have any real dreams. Then he would sleepwalk to work, reading mundane texts from his old friends on the bus, still unsure of how to feel good about film.
(Skipping the crowded buses of the evening rush, he would let his feet carry him, longing for mariachi horns to come in unexpectedly. Any sort of fanfare to accompany the constant parade of life, the ticker tape he imagined falling from the sky. It wasn't so much about him, but everything that surrounded him. The trees, the buildings, the swarming masses, how it all came together in a way that was both graceful and awkward and typically taken for granted—especially among his old friends, whose apathy astounded him. He wanted a grand pinch, something that would acknowledge the fact this was happening and, whatever this was, was big. The pomp he imagined was only necessary to wake people up, to wake himself up.)
