Serafina. Micro story fill for “pet” featuring her chocobo Mortimer.

Mortimer is not a pet.

 Serafina tells everyone who calls him such. “He’s a trained Grand Company chocobo. The best ass-kicker I know, and one of the very best healers!”

 Mortimer is not a pet.

 He isn’t like her koala joey who sits on her shoulder as she walks and crafts. The koala joey sometimes even sleeps in bed with her (when her mate is away but sometimes his nutkin and the joey are with them in bed).

 Mortimer is not a pet.

 However, that doesn’t stop his mistress from buying expensive and elaborate barding for him. She lovingly dresses in the barding and tells him how beautiful he is. My mistress also says that I’m her best boy!

 Mortimer is not a pet.

 “He’s my companion.” Serafina explains to the Doman children in Revenant’s Toll. “A true and loyal companion.” When Lord Haurchefant died, Serafina slept next to Mortimer in the Fortemps stables, weeping into his feathers as he cooed to comfort her. She did the same when her lover collapsed in Ala Mhigo. And now, while she’s recovering from saving the world once again, her lover brings him to the window of her room in the Baldesion Annex so she can see him. And I can see her! She’s alive! And she’s giving me treats!

 Mortimer is not a pet.

 “He’s family.” Serafina says matter-of-factly to Alisaie one day in the Far East. “He’s my family.”
