Chapter One
Tumblr media
The smell of burnt sugar from the candy floss carts is overpowered by the petrol stinging your nose when you enter the tent. The chatter of the crowd mostly drowned out by the buzz of the motorbikes as they zip around, flicking up dirt. There’s a warm breeze that tickles the hem of your dress, sweat clinging to the back of your thighs.
You’re momentarily stuck in a trance watching them go back and forth when you feel a pinch on your arm. Your friend nudging you and speaking in your ear to draw your attention.
That’s him.
He looks much the same as the others in his white jumpsuit, but you can’t deny there’s a different aura that follows him.
One that’s been picked up by most the girls in town in the short time the carnival tent has been pitched.
And now you can’t seem to draw your attention elsewhere as he parades on one wheel to the cheers of the crowd. Making your breath catch in your chest every time he was in the air, falling back down to the ground. At every moment left up to fate and physics as he swoops in behind his fellow stunt riders in the gaudily named globe of death. And again, when the helmet finally came off, his brunette locks set free and only slightly dampened with sweat – a coy smile and wave to the crowd.
You’d fallen in love with strangers before of course. Passionate fantasies that lasted just as long as their presence in town. Settling with the dust left in their wake, another moment of escapism to keep you going. But unlike the others, he lingered.
Steve ‘hot spur’ Harrington
And when he started coming into the diner every morning for a cup of black coffee and some bacon with a side of toast you didn’t think much of it. Even less so when you noticed that he’d hardly say a word to you but was all smiles and charming lines to the other waitresses. Even if you’d get a tightness in your chest every time you’d hear the engine of his bike as he pulled up – it didn’t matter.
He was just another fantasy soon to be gone.
That was until he sat up, catching your attention as he uncrossed his legs when you’d left the diner one night, realising he must’ve been leaning on his bike for a while. Your eyes following the cigarette he drops next to the two that already lay discarded by his worn boots, before they travel back up to find his already watching you.
“I was uh,” he cleared his throat of the rasp left by smoke, “I was wonderin’ if you wanted to go for a ride?”
“Excuse me?” Of course you thought you hadn’t heard him right. That he’d mistaken you for someone else. The light in the car park barely cast on orange glow on the both of you. But then, again.
“You wanna go for a ride?”
“You don’t know me.” Your eyebrows pinch, head moving in disbelief.
“Sure I do.” Then he flashes you a smile, shyer than the one he’d been giving the prettier waitresses. “You’re the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen.”
“I-I don’t-“
“The one that I’ve been trying all week to pluck up the courage to ask. So?” His leg starts to bounce, his torso leaning forward while he still remains perched on the side of his bike.
You shrug, still not sure where this conversation was coming from. “So?”
“You wanna go for a ride?”
You shake your head, “No.”
“Oh.” Steve finally breaks eye contact, looking down as he kicks at the gravel. “Right, yeah.” His hand runs through his hair.
“I’ve never been on one.”
His head snaps back up.
You gesture to where he’s seated. “First time with a stranger seems like a terrible decision.”
He smiles again, more assured, teeth on display. “You seen me ride?”
You nod.
“Then you know you ain’t got nothin’ to worry about.”
“It’s reckless.”
He laughs, eyes darting as he notices your body move slightly closer. “It’s practice. And it’s confidence. Two things you need to be good. ‘M not gonna let anything happen to you.”
“Why me?”
Steve stands up, bridging the gap between you in a couple of steps. “Already told you.” Your head moves back to accommodate his closeness.
“You think I’m beautiful, right. How many girls you said that to since you got here?”
“You seen me with another girl?”
“No.”
“Then I think you just answered your own question.”
You end up in a slight stare off. The smile on his face might’ve pissed you off if it wasn’t so damn charming.
And when you feel his hand pull your arm tighter across his torso, the cotton of his white T-shirt against your skin grounding you as your heart beats rapidly between you, the wind roaring in your ears, you can’t help the smile that finally creeps up on you. Steve squeezes your arm again when he feels it pressed up against his back.
And that’s how one of your fantasies turned real; how you met the love that would burn you to the ground.

Went to a motor festival yesterday with my dad for father's day, saw a shit ton of cool cars and bikes, but what really stood out were the motorbike stunts. The freestyle motorcross stuff that required insane strength and control mid-air on flashy, powerful bikes? Eivor, all the way. And the vintage motorbike wall-of-death act, complete with overly cocky, performative riders lacking any protective gear? Big Kassandra energy. I need them viscerally.
I can see different vibes, too, if they asked you if you fancied going on a little ride with them.
Kassandra gets you acquainted with her bike first, settling you on the seat, letting you carefully run your fingers over the pristine paint job before revving the engine, making you gasp. She lets her hands linger a few seconds too long as she helps you into her protective jacket. She wants you ever so slightly flustered, but relaxed enough that you're melting into her back when she finally takes off, going pleasantly slow. The thrumming of the engine, leisurely speed and the warmth of her body coalesce to create an intimate atmosphere. All calculated, if the smirk on her lips as you kiss her the moment you're both rid of your helmets says anything.
Eivor, however, wants you to experience that pure rush of adrenaline. She fusses over making sure you're protected from head to toe, of course, and rides slower than she would on her own. But she delights at the way your grip around her waist tightens as she ramps up the speed. At every set of traffic lights, while you catch your breath from the exhilaration, she reaches behind and caresses your leg with her gloved hand, smiling as you relax into her. You pull over at a roadside diner, where she smooths over the case of helmet hair you didn't know you had, and you share a milkshake in a cute little booth with her arm around your shoulders.

Editor’s note: The following interview was conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike began on July 14, 2023.]
Rebecca Ferguson is ready for a break. She’s finished her A.D.R. (additional dialogue) on “Dune: Part Two,” the promotion chores on “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” (her third in the series), and is on her way home to hang with her 16-year-old son and still-friendly first husband in Sweden.
She was prepared to go back to England’s Hoddesdon Studios to shoot the second season of “Silo,” the most popular series on AppleTV+, returning her to the lead role of Sheriff. Not necessary, as the day after we spoke, July 13, SAG-AFTRA announced they were going on strike. “The percentage of people fortunate enough to have a good life as actors have to fight for the other percentage,” she said on the phone.
The 39-year-old actress, who grew up in Stockholm, attended a bilingual English school, and trained as a dancer, has steadily built herself into a major star. Who else goes toe-to-toe with Tom Cruise and returns to do it again, twice, without simply being a romantic appendage? It makes perfect sense that her best friend on the set of “Dune” was Charlotte Rampling. “She’s absolutely exquisite,” she said. “I look up to and admire her ridiculously.”
...
The actress rejects the notion of ever “going up against” Tom Cruise, who wanted her for Ilsa after seeing her in the “War of the Roses” mini-series “The White Queen.” “It’s not a battle,” she said. “You go in with the mission of trying to survive. It is written by the incredible Christopher McQuarrie, and Tom is part of that journey. They want phenomenal characters. It merged beautifully, the character [Ilsa] with me: the time, the place, the relationship with Tom all worked with well. The trajectory of this character is so complex and interesting to work with. I asked for a continuation. The story writes itself.”
The actress does not even try to keep up with Cruise. For one thing, she doesn’t perform all her own stunts. If she has to fall out of a speeding car, she leaves that to her beloved stunt double Lucy Cork.
Ferguson did, however, handle the climactic “Dead Reckoning” fight on the bridge herself, she said. “I tend to be running far behind, but I try. Tom is the movie. He represents ‘Mission,’ everything that’s good, and thankfully nothing bad has come from it. You are offered a palette of knowledge: you learn it and do it and embrace it. You also can choose to say ‘no.’ They will find a solution around it, you’re never forced to do it.”
She gamely tried to master riding a motorcycle, and had to earn a license. “You have to learn quickly,” she said. “I had to be ready to shoot soon. It was a 760 Triumph, a big motorbike. I am very strong, but being on one of these on a road in England going fast — the trainer said I was going too slow. ‘I need to get off; it’s not safe. I don’t trust myself.’ No worries! They had other options: Jennie [Tinmouth], the best motorcycle bike rider in the world.”
This “Mission: Impossible” installment boasts more women than usual including Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, and Hayley Atwell. “‘Mission’ is probably the one franchise that knows how to write storylines for women,” said Ferguson, who takes the scripts as they come. “They break things down; there’s not a lot of going into detail about what happened. You do not talk about it. There’s always reasons why arcs go a certain way,” she said. I control my own destiny [as Ilsa], there are reasons why things happen.” (A very compelling notation, given what happens to Ilsa in the latest film.)
“Silo” has turned out to be the happiest experience of Ferguson’s career, partly because she is an executive producer, but mostly, she said, because showrunner-creator Graham Yost (“Speed”) runs a non-hierarchical set. “I don’t like it when people are more important than others,” she said. “A happy set becomes creative and a safe set becomes a safe space.”
.....
What’s most important with each character for Ferguson, besides building up the right physique, is to “create a silhouette,” she said. “Then you’ve nailed a memorable figure, say, Cruella de Vil, through movement.” Working with movement coach Alexandra Reynolds (“The Theory of Everything”) she expressed the trauma Juliette stores in her body. “She carries a lot of internal grief and internally, and is socially uncomfortable, and is walking away when people touch her. She’s tactile with her own tools and her own world,” Ferguson said. “I often take on powerful characters and portray regal princesses and countesses and concubines, so my agenda was to completely break down and find in myself the capacity to do something else with Juliette.”
At first when the mechanic is named sheriff, she wants to solve the mystery of her lover’s death. “I find Juliette selfish in the beginning, she’s a broken heroine who gradually realizes there are things bigger than herself,” she said. “I love where we are going to in Season 2. She definitely learns new tricks and things get very wet.”
Next up: “Dune: Part Two” (November 3, Warner Bros.) is in the hands of the editors and composer Hans Zimmer. Assuming the strikes are resolved by October, Ferguson will be back on the promo trail.
Returning to Lady Jessica offered a character in transition. “She starts as a powerful, knowledgeable, magical mother and protector on a quest and a journey to make Paul into the leader,” she said. “She’s on a path to see the creation she has made and how is this new Jessica in relation to what her son has become? He’s more forceful, what does she do? She’s a significantly important person to the Fremen.”

Lane Changes
By Borg 5 of 9
I’d decided to drive down the California coast, somewhat randomly, to decompress. Work had been shit. It was a chilly, overcast afternoon, when I spotted a packed parking lot off the highway 1, which was somewhat unusual given how cold the weather was. I figured there must be something interesting happening, so I pulled off the road.
The weather wasn’t so bad, except that when the wind picked up it would fling the sporadic stinging droplet of water right into your face. Getting out of the car, I spotted a large crowd gathered in the distance. Every now and then, cheering and clapping erupted from the group. I moved closer to see what it was all about. A jetski raced around buoys and jumped off waves, performing stunts. There were cameras. Every other person had their phone up to capture the event.
It was moderately exciting, so I moderately paid attention. Eventually, it was time for the next contestant. They announced the name, but I was only half listening, and it was difficult to make out the words through all the reverberations anyway.
As people got a glimpse of the rider, the crowd noise went silent. She was statuesque, and clad head to toe in a pink and white form-fitting neoprene outfit. A matching helmet with visor hid her identity. She whipped the craft around the sea at insane angles, taking multiple flips and twists off of ramps. The previous contestant suddenly appeared positively amateurish in comparison. There were sporadic claps, but no cheering from the crowd. A sort of reverence for this figure, perhaps? But then I realized some people in the crowd were murmuring. They sounded disdainful in tone. Or maybe that was just my perception.
I leaned in to the spectator next to me. “Who is that?” I asked, in a low voice.
“What, that?”, he jabbed a thumb towards the water. “You must be new here. That’s Jess Lane.”
“Jess Lane,” I repeated. Huh. I’ll have to remember to look her up once I had decent cell reception again.
I had decided to spend the day checking out the village. It had the usual small bookshops and antique stores you’d expect from a seaside town. But I couldn’t stop thinking about that rider.
And now, the sun had almost set. But for some reason, instead of checking into a local motel like anyone with common sense would do, I found myself drawn back to where that event I had seen was. Why? I wasn’t sure. It was as if I thought she would still be here, gliding across the waves, on an ocean which was now empty.
I hung around the parking lot a little, hands in my jacket pockets to keep warm. I looked across the street towards the dive bar. In the daytime it was fairly inconspicuous, but at night it was unmistakably lit up with activity. I walked on over.
There were a few trucks with surfboards in the back parked out front, some with ATVs. A dog barked from one. Motorbikes were parked against one side of the building.
Well, what if? It wasn’t my kind of place, but why not check it out? It’s not like I’m going to be here again, on the same day as whatever this event was. And I might as well soak up some local vibes before I head back.
As I flung open the doors, there was the rider, seated at the bar. But it’s not as if you could miss her. She looked exactly as she had out on the course: Helmet, visor and all. A conspicuous splash of bright pink against the sedated, warm colors of the bar’s interior. That I did not expect.
After being starstruck, I slowly approached her. She sat on the barstool staring straight ahead, stiff, upright, a small shot glass of red liquor in front of her. “Mrs. Lane?”. No response. Like a lot of bars, it was far too loud for anyone’s good.  “Hey, are you Jess Lane?” I asked, projecting my voice this time. A burly man sitting next to her got up from his seat. Probably her private security.
“Please don’t disturb Miss. Lane,” he requested. Stern but professional.
“Sorry, I was just going to ask for an autograph or something. I saw her out on the waves today and wanted to quickly tell her how it just blew me away.”
He laughed, sincerely, as if it was a good joke.
“What’s so funny?” I asked.
“Jessica Lane died about ten years ago. I thought everybody knew that. It made international news. She got mauled by a shark. There wasn’t a whole lot left of her after that.”
I smirked at the sheer unbridled chutzpah. This guy wasn’t going to get rid of me that easy. “Come on, man. I just talked to someone who said that’s who it was.”
“No, I mean it. This is an android that’s just based on her brain patterns or something. I’m just here to protect the merchandise.”
He produced a laminated ID badge. It read “CryoLife Industries. Cybernetics Research Division”
“See this? I’m from the company she sold herself to. You think someone like Jess Lane would bother with such a small competition?”
“Bullshit,” I laughed.
“You know what? Fine, go ahead. You can ask ‘her’, or whatever that thing is. Go on, ask it why we’re all here” he sneered.
And something about the seriousness with which he said that scared me, just a little. Either they had concocted an elaborate prank to play on non-regulars at this bar, or something was seriously off.
I leaned into the bar, a little nervous now. “Hi, Jess Lane? I don’t mean to bug you. I was wondering if I could just grab a quick autograph”
It was a few seconds before I got my response.
With the soft, high-toned whine of a small electric motor, the rider slowly turned its head towards me. There was a soft click as the visor popped open. Beneath was a human face. Mostly. One eye had been replaced with a cybernetic sensory array, the left side of her head covered in metallic implants. The other eye was still human, but fixed nearly straight ahead. It intensely inspected nothing, as if in a trance. Tubes snaked from the nose and mouth to down beneath her high-collared outfit. There was a hiss, of air moving through the narrow passageways. Her skin was eerily pale and showed the cracks and wrinkles of middle age, but otherwise appeared healthy.
“This unit is not authorized to grant autographs. Sufficient access privileges are necessary,” she answered in a nearly flat monotone. The voice was human, but with a slight rasp.
I was stunned. What was this?
“Are you Jessica Lane?” I asked.
“This unit is a product of Jessica Lane’s biological tissue and cybernetic technology. It is not authorized to represent itself as, ‘Jessica Lane’. It is,” she paused, choosing the words carefully. “A second entity”.
“Then,” I hesitated. “Who are you?”
She blinked and her one eye searched as she formulated an answer.
“We are the recoverable portions of Jessica Lane’s mind fused with neural network technology. We are, ‘Jessica Lane’,” she said, clearly pausing before her human name to put it in quotes. “But, we are also artificial intelligence. We are one.”
“But.. why?”
“She had the option of her usable tissue being transplanted into a cybernetic body to live onward. She took it. Her wish was that once a year she would be able to do what she always loved. Reenacting a pivotal event that brought her joy in her youth: Winning the championship that launched her career. In exchange, researchers received one of the few living cyborgs to study.”
I mused, “So, every year, you’re trotted out to do this. Compete in the competition that started your career, go to the bar you always went to, then go across the street to ‘celebrate’. Like a living time capsule”. It came out more dickish than I wanted. I wasn’t trying to be mean. I was expressing my shock.
And although her expression was blank, you could feel a longing. Reaching for memories, like a hand reaching into a dark sack to retrieve lost pieces of a soul that were always just out of reach. I had triggered something in her. Tripped a wire. She became flustered. Her brow slightly furrowed, human emotions breaking through the cybernetic wall.
“Yes. With a drink in front of me that I cannot drink. I perform the ritual, and then I am taken back to the research lab, if I have not been rented out for a promotional spot or–”, it stopped, its train of thought cut off, trying to recall something that will never come.  “This unit does not recall much about its human lifespan anymore. This is its body now,” It tilted its head downward and gestured, growing more anxious. “Beneath the neoprene is not flesh but wires, motors, and processors.” She looked back at me, clearly distressed now. “Perhaps I’m not Jessica Lane at all. Maybe I never was. Maybe this is all just–”
The company thug interrupted, barking at her, “Code Lane dash 2, 4, 4, 6, 1” Her face froze. After a few seconds, it reset back to that blank expression, eyes staring ahead. The head pivoted forwards again. Then the man turned to me.
“What the hell did you say to it?” he demanded, a couple inches from me.
“Hey, uh, sorry, man” I stammered. This wasn’t good. This dude could break me in half, and nobody in this bar would give a shit.
His demeanor softened. ”Well, now I have to take it back to the lab. The day’s about over anyway. We probably got enough data.” He took out his mobile device and paid up. Then he turned back to Jess. “Lane, follow”
With that, Jessica’s head raised. She stiffly rose from her seat, pivoted, and finally followed the man out the door.
I let a few moments pass so it didn’t seem like I was tailing them. But I wanted to get another glimpse of the strange scene. Or maybe I just wanted to see the rider one last time.
It was dark now. In the corner of the lot, a large van I hadn’t noticed had its tailgate open. Bright white light poured out. Computer consoles and what looked like electronic testing equipment lined the walls. Another figure was inside in a lab coat, poring over readings of some kind. I arrived in time to see Jess Lane, or whoever that is, dutifully load herself into the van, right before the doors slammed shut and they drove off.
The last of the sun slipped beneath the horizon. I headed back to the city.

Rodeo (2023) (Dir. Lola Quivoron - France)
After a chance meeting at an illicit "Rodeo" where riders show off their bikes and stunts, Julia strives to prove herself to a volatile, ultra-masculine clique, performing cons and surviving by her wits.
“Hot-tempered and fiercely independent, Julia (Julie Ledru) is a gearhead who thrives in hostile environments and turns every situation to her advantage. She has a talent for scamming condescending men who think it’s cute that she shows interest in their used motorbikes–and can’t fathom her riding away with gleeful abandon. Her obsession with the high-octane world of urban ‘Rodeos’ - illicit gatherings where riders show off their bikes and latest daring stunts - sparks a chance meeting with a volatile clique. Julia strives to prove herself to the ultra-masculine gang by performing cons and running errands for their incarcerated ring leader, Dom. She finds a surprising connection with Dom’s wife, Ophélie (Antonia Buresi) and son, a risky move that puts a target on her back. How to Choose the Right Bike Helmet
As a seasoned powersport bike rider, I’ve learned that choosing the right helmet is as crucial as picking the bike itself. Whether you're a casual rider or a professional racer, your helmet is your best ally on the road. In this comprehensive guide, I'll share my insights on selecting the perfect helmet, combining my personal experiences with practical advice to help you make an informed decision.
Tumblr media
Understanding the Importance of a Good Helmet
The first step in choosing the right helmet is understanding its importance. A helmet is not just a mandatory accessory; it's a life-saving device. It protects your head in the event of a crash, significantly reducing the risk of severe injury or even death.
Step 1: Identifying Your Riding Style
Different types of riding require different types of helmets. The main categories include:
Road Biking Helmets: Lightweight with good ventilation, ideal for long rides on pavement.
Mountain Biking Helmets: Offer more coverage and protection, particularly around the back of the head, for off-road terrain.
BMX Helmets: Similar to mountain biking helmets but with additional features for tricks and stunts.
Commuter Helmets: Focus on comfort and practicality, often with integrated lights or reflective materials for visibility.
Step 2: Checking for Safety Standards
Always choose a helmet that meets established safety standards. Look for certifications like:
DOT (Department of Transportation): Commonly required for motorbikes in the U.S.
CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission): Standard for bicycles in the U.S.
SNELL: A non-profit organisation that provides stringent testing and certification.
ECE (Economic Commission for Europe): Widely recognized in over 50 countries.
Step 3: Ensuring the Right Fit
A properly fitting helmet is essential. Here's how to ensure a good fit:
Measure Your Head: Use a flexible tape measure to determine the circumference of your head.
Try It On: The helmet should sit level on your head, covering most of your forehead and not tilting back.
Check the Fit: There should be little to no room between your head and the helmet. It shouldn’t be uncomfortably tight but should remain snug when you move your head.
Step 4: Considering Comfort and Ventilation
Comfort is key, especially for long rides. Look for:
Adequate Ventilation: Helps keep your head cool.
Adjustable Straps: Ensure a secure and comfortable fit.
Padding: Look for removable and washable padding for hygiene and comfort.
Step 5: Exploring Additional Features
Modern helmets come with various features:
Visors: Great for mountain biking to protect against sun and debris.
MIPS Technology: Adds an extra layer of safety by reducing rotational forces on the brain.
Aerodynamics: Important for road racing.
Built-in Communication Systems: Useful for group riding.
Step 6: Balancing Quality with Budget
While you shouldn’t compromise safety for cost, there's a wide range of quality helmets available at various price points. Invest in the best helmet you can afford, considering it's a long-term investment in your safety.
Step 7: Aesthetic Considerations
While safety and functionality should come first, the look of the helmet is also important. Choose a style and colour that you like; if you feel good wearing it, you’re more likely to wear it every time you ride.
Step 8: Regular Maintenance and Care
Proper maintenance extends the life of your helmet:
Clean Regularly: Use mild soap and water for the shell and pads.
Inspect for Damage: Regularly check for cracks or wear.
Replace When Necessary: After a significant impact or every 3-5 years, as materials degrade over time.
Conclusion
Choosing the right bike helmet  is a critical decision for any rider. It requires balancing safety, comfort, functionality, and budget. Remember, a helmet is not just a piece of equipment; it’s a vital protective gear that could save your life. As an experienced bike rider, my advice is to invest time and effort in selecting the right helmet – it's as important as choosing the bike itself.

Motorbikes & Skateboards
I grew up among skateboarders and motorbikers, especially stunt riders. Yeah, that’s what you heard! My brother and I grew up playing among them, watching the stunt riders performing their wheeling sessions on the street in front of our grandma’s house. Most of those stunt riders used to skateboard as well. They were older than us, and we saw them moving around the neighborhood on their bikes…

35 Motorcycle Gifts for Husband That Will Get His Engine Revving
Motorcycles are enjoyed by almost all men, and some are even obsessed with them. They're completely infatuated with them, and their life sometimes revolve around them, whether it's owning a new cool model of Kawasaki Ninja or performing incredible stunts on a dirt bike. A man who likes traveling (and who doesn't?) will fall in love with touring and his motorbike, which provides the greatest mode of transportation at all times. His inanimate surroundings appear to come to life as he is riding his motorcycle. Even the most insignificant things attract him. The sky appeared to have changed color. He has the sensation that the wind is kissing him as it goes by. The journey, not the destination, is your goal. When asked why he enjoys motorcycles, a rider reminisces about the pleasures and activities he had with his favorite machine. It's almost as though a lover recalls his ladylove. That's how much they value their motorcycles! Whether your spouse likes riding bikes, is a member of a biker club, or runs a motorcycle store, here is a list of unique motorbike presents for bikers.
