I do just wanna add to the meta here a bit. It’s not that Izaya was denied love or affection. His parents, while constantly on work trips, provided and cared enough to demonstrate some parental love. Narita goes out of his way to tell us that Izaya could fade into the background as a kid but he was well liked by his classmates. I thought the entire class fighting to have him in their field trip group was very sweet even.

The issue, as best I can tell, is two fold.

One: You know how in No Longer Human, Tsushima talks about ‘clowning’ as a child? That he was aware that humans were very mean to things they didn’t like, even as a child, and thus behaved like clown to distract them. I fully believe, as the little boy who spent his formative years in the library, that Izaya has adopted a lot of this belief. Though, if I’m understanding correctly, the idea of ‘masking’ is Very Prevalent in collectivist cultures and especially in Japan where people are compared to a nail that sticks out.

And the two: The Internet Was a Mistake

Chat forums, social media, etc - Durarara has stayed iconic because it was so good at using and depicting internet friendships. Izaya loves this world. He can create and manipulate groups both through direct interaction and indirect changes to the interface. He can control any aspect of the conversation with filters. And more than anything, the internet is amazing for lying - which is basically Izaya’s main use on it.

And who is he on the internet? Someone everyone wants to talk to: a cute perky girl. “Kanra” is thought of, even by people who KNOW Izaya, as a woman whenever she’s interacting on the Dollar’s chat room. Which is actually very funny because many of Izaya’s mental counterparts, that of ideological incels, end up finding peace by transitioning.

They Cloned Tyrone did such a fun thing with Fontaine’s character. His first reaction is the violent, physical one. YET! He is never portrayed a ‘thug’ or someone who is only capable of violence. He makes his mom food when he eats, he pours liquor into Frog’s cup, he does not threaten any of Slick Charles’ uhhhhhhh workers?

He is violent, yes. But he is not a mindlessly violent man.

I just really enjoyed that all his actions were shown to have thought to them. It’s just that Fontaine’s thoughts lead him to accept a violent action as a solution to those thoughts.

I also just thought him constantly reaching for his piece was very anime in it’s hilarity. Man’s is just always pulling it out while his friends go “NO NO NO NO NO!” Fontaine trying to kill his own clone is as funny as it is miserably saddening.
