Greetings fellow masshole ❤
I live in one of the various suburban/formerly semi-rural areas of the state. Longtime residents are getting priced out, the traffic is becoming unmanageable, conservation groups are locked in eternal battle with developers who want to destroy woodland for McMansions etc etc.
A lot of people in the community are asking "what can be done?", and specifically looking for books about urban planning/design. Do you have any recommendations?

I don’t have much in the way of book recs but I will say this: A lot just comes down to focus. I’ll point out that of the three issues you highlight, at least conservation and housing costs are somewhat at odds. More housing is the only way to reduce costs, while new construction hurts the environment. When you get specific, though, you can start to make progress. Say the woods are preserved, but another block is zoned for at market new development rather than luxury development. You have the basis of a proposal that you can take to the city government that has something for everyone. If it’s rejected, you know what needs to follow it up.
Now, if Zoning and MPO level stuff is above your level of ability, regardless of the reason, you can start smaller. Build a wildflower garden for pollinators, or even just start leaving your leaves in the fall. The same principle applies though. Backyard chickens might take working with the town government but you are increasing the productivity of the land by turning turf grass into agriculturally productive land, decrease your grocery bills and help your neighbors be more food secure while also boosting biodiversity.
Unfortunately, the only way to fix traffic is fewer cars, and the only way to reduce cars is the make driving worse or more expensive which nobody ever seems to want. That said, if your town was serious about it, surge parking, protected bike lanes, and rural public transit options like the MWRTA Catch Connect can create meaningful alternatives to driving while also putting pressure on drivers to make a switch through cost or convenience. Narrowing lanes in urban and suburban areas paradoxically decreases traffic because drivers navigate at lower speeds and generate less turbulence in traffic flows. School costs do go up, but this is offset by increased economic activity and a lower proportional school-age population when housing prices go down. Cheaper housing means more taxpayers, only a fraction of whom will need school services.
It’s hard to go into more detail without knowing a little more, but your MPO/MPA (municipal planning organization/authority) should also have public reports on their priorities and they are very sensitive to public opinion so getting loud will often get you pretty far.
