Michael is digging through his tool box when he hears a familiar voice behind him say, “Hey, Sanders. Wanna take a look under my hood?”

He turns around to see Alex Manes standing before him in all his emo glory: a black band t-shirt tight across his chest, immaculate black denim skinny jeans hugging his thighs, and a messenger bag stuck with pins slung across his shoulder. His eyes are lined in black, like always, and he’s got a beautiful smile on his face, one of those rare ones that are becoming more common by the day. Michael would like to think he’s got something to do with that.

Five times Michael Sanders’ dad almost walked in on him with Alex and one time he did.

comment: if you haven’t read lynne’s whole michael sanders au, you should absolutely go and do that. written in the wake of the sanders-tried-to-adopt-michael revelation, this is a beautiful, much happier version of the teen!malex story. i love it so much. please don’t stop at this fic; read the whole series!

Kissing a boy was no different to kissing a girl, in practice. Kissing Alex was different to kissing anyone else, and Michael’s brain didn’t have the space to think about it. He’d never kissed anyone like that before, without being absolutely sure they wanted him to. His mind had never gone blank and a little bit desperate like that. He’d never been so happy to find out that someone wanted to kiss him back.

Alex wanted to kiss him back. The fake stars were shining on the wall behind them, and Alex’s arms were around him, hands grabbing at Michael’s hoodie. Michael slid his under Alex’s sleeveless combat jacket thing, fingers catching in the cheap fabric of his UFO Emporium t-shirt as Alex made a soft noise into his mouth that Michael caught, a fizz of heat going through his skin. 

What if events in 2008 went slightly differently, and Michael and Alex joined Max and Liz on their summer road trip across the US? Features: escaping Roswell, camping, teen love, secret reveals, many confessions of feelings, and everyone involved generally having a very good summer with a hopeful ending.

comment: masterpiece after masterpiece! this is just another in a list of amazing long fics that @myrmidryad has gifted as with. if you enjoyed their fic  Take Me Back To The Start and their take on teenage alex, you will absolutely devour this. i love canon divergence that branches off during their highschool years, and this is a beautiful, indulgent cross-country roadtrip with these teen sweethearts. i really can’t do much more than insist you read it. it’s so lovely. i cried at several parts. i have visceral memories of certain paragraphs. this fic is worth every second you spend reading it.

"Nobody owns you, Guerin," Alex says.

“Yeah, right, of course not,” Michael agrees without conviction. “No one owns me. My body is just entrusted to the guardianship of the good ol’ Global Resource Alliance for the Care of Extraterrestrials.” With an acronym like GRACE the program couldn’t possibly be an evil, twisted, farce, after all. Michael’s seen the videos from the propaganda campaigns--been featured as one of the haggard faces in the videos of the crash survivors. It’s what made him such a popular request for the Antaran Family Placement program--except of course, the people who saw that terrified young alien on their screens had all been expecting some timid little child who’d lap up their praise and coddling eagerly and be a Good Little Showpiece of how generous and benevolent his placement family was.

Boy were they all disappointed to meet the real Michael Guerin....

comment: i know a lot of people are already on this fic but i wanted to highlight just in case there’s people out there who haven’t seen it! the premise is absolutely fantastic; antarians are refugees that came to earth and have been integrated into the system, although that’s going about as well as you can imagine. michael ends up on the manes property for his placement, meets alex, and well... you can imagine. the issues of power, control, and consent are so carefully navigated within the writing whilst not sacrificing any of the narrative or flow, which is so wonderful. the sweetness of blooming young love is explored parallel to the overarching dread of jesse manes, the warden and The Worst.

There had been a lot of bad times in Michael Guerin’s life. Some good times, sure, but not a lot. Checking into his dorm room turned out to be an unexpected pleasure.

When the RA opened the door, he was staring straight at the very nice ass of a guy hanging up a poster on the wall above his bed. Of course, he jumped a mile and almost fell off the bed, but hell, that was one fine ass.

“Hey, Alex, meet your roommate, Michael.”

Michael watched as his roommate jumped down from the bed with a slight wince to shake his hand. “Nice to meet you.”.

What if Michael hadn't gotten back to Roswell? What if Alex got a full ride to UNM too? What if they ended up roommates? What would happen?.

comment: this has been on my to-rec list for a long time but i have to say, it is probably the most requested fic in my inbox. people are wild about this fic and tbh, i understand why. it’s a college au that imagines michael and alex meeting there, instead of in roswell. they’re roommates and they connect immediately, slowly building on their relationship, and their friendship with other characters (like maria!!) it’s a slow burn, mutual pining, communication bonanza, that tells the story from the pov of both boys. it’s sweet, has some very realistic and wonderful dialogue, and doesn’t ignore the alien-shaped elephant in the room. also, don’t forget to check out the extra (future) content located in the series And the Reason is You.

comment: i dearly love these aus where things go differently for the boys after highschool, whether because they run away or end up going to college despite the circumstances. this au series is both! two parts at the moment, the first set during their graduation, in which they have a much needed conversation. the second part involves their time at college and can best be summed up with the author’s tag: and they were ROOMMATES. i mourn what could have been for them, but that’s why fics like this are so wonderful to have!!

The first night in their new apartment everything is in boxes and Michael floats the little tea candles five feet in the air because, as he was lighting them, Alex said, “Wow I guess setting the whole building on fire is a great way to get out of our lease,” and Michael lifted each eucalyptus scented wax round with his mind, eyebrows raised in challenge. Alex shook his head, fighting a smile.

College au, technically, where alex and michael enroll in college as nontraditional students in a post-series future.

comment: another college-themed fic for y’all, this time featuring mature-age students alex and michael, who get their nebulous well-adjusted ending and go off to live together and attend college and just do normal boyfriend things. i want to live in this beautiful au. this author is so good at writing this soft domestic tone that just makes me want to melt.

Michael couldn’t help but smile as Alex moaned into his mouth.

He wasn’t used to this just yet, it still felt surreal. One day Alex was asking him to tutor him in biology, the next he was being kissed senseless against the wall in the shed behind his house. He’d never even kissed a human before Alex. Now he couldn’t get enough.

“What time did you tell your mom you’d be home?” Alex asked softly, his nose bumping Michael’s before he kissed his cheek and moved to his jaw.

Humans and Antarians aren't really meant to be together. It's frowned upon. Alex doesn't really give a shit. OR 6 times Alex is strong and 1 time Michael has to be strong for him

comment: ooh i love these au fics where antarians are living on earth, out in the open, or earth has some kind of relationship with antar. it means that alex and michael can meet when they’re young without the alien secret between them, which can make for some really interesting dynamics/plot changes. this fic is a cute little 6+1 set with the boys in highschool, but it pretty quickly delves into some of the more realistic issues that might accompany alien refugees on earth. rnm is political, and i really admire that so many of our rnm fics don’t shy away from these topics. this one’s a neat little take on some very similar issues, sandwiched by some nice malex moments, and some angsty malex moments (i mean c’mon, it’s malex).

“God, you’re such a fuckin’ asshole.”

“The fuck, trailer trash?”

Michael rolls his eyes. He hadn’t actually meant to say it so loud, but whatever. He raises his eyebrows and looks at Valenti.

“You heard me. You’re a fuckin’ asshole.” His eyes dart, quickly, in the direction of Alex Manes, who’s already retrieved his notebook off the ground and is stalking away, muttering to himself.

In the process of sticking it to Valenti, Michael inadvertently becomes a Division I college football recruit.

comment: michael as a college football player? i don’t know where you guys come up with this stuff but i am loving it. even with my (very) limited knowledge of american college/football, i tore through this fic and had no trouble understanding everything. i love the ways that michael’s relationships shift and change with his new position, especially when he takes isobel with him. and don’t worry; there’s some fabulous malex stuff in there as well. pining in highschool? check. fortuitous meeting down the road? check. sweetness and light and all good things? check. i really really enjoyed this one. it’s amazing how the story (esp the second half) is told through little scenes and tidbits. love it. would read again a thousand times.

Home is hard to find, and it’s not always a place, it can also be a person. And if it’s the right one, no matter the obstacles, it’s everlasting.

This is the story of Alex Manes and Michael Guerin’s relationship through the end of their Senior Year.

comment: if you had told me months ago that i’d be reading an 18-chapter retelling of michael and alex’s senior year; i would have laughed (the canon is already heartbreaking enough; why do we do this to ourselves). but this fic is just so damn sweet in places, tragic in others, and i found myself really appreciating the moments being filled in that they wouldn’t have had time for in the show. the author has clearly worked hard at this beauty, and you can feel the love for the characters jumping off the page. it’s nearing the end, which means more crying, so have some fluff ready to go in your back pocket for when the tears start.

Michael lands in Roswell on a hot August night in 2006, ending a months-long trip across the galaxy. He could lie and say that it had been exciting. He could pretend that he’d spent his time dodging meteors, meeting other species, and saving lives, but he’d be lying.

Honestly, the most excitement he’d seen had been when the course he’d programmed into the ship had to get re-routed because of a few satellites along the way. Or maybe it had been the time when he’d run out of his favorite rations and had to subsist on something like gruel for weeks. It makes it all the better when he breaches the atmosphere and begins his final controlled descent in the night sky, touching down on a lawn in Roswell, New Mexico.

Once he turns off the engines and goes through the safety checklist, he bounds outside and finds his mother waiting for him on the desert strip outside of a two story house.

“Welcome home,” she says, wrapping her arms around him and squeezing tightly.

Michael follows in his mother’s footsteps and runs off to earth to escape his royal responsibilities, but what he finds when he begins his new life is so much more than he ever bargained for.

comment: this is such a fascinating au idea which takes us back to the teenage years, only michael is visiting earth from antar for a kind of “break” from being a royal on antar. while he’s resistant to life on earth at first he, predictably, starts to enjoy it. as if the context wasn’t fun enough, it’s so wonderful to see the relationship between michael and alex develop in a slow, sweet way. i crave those interactions that we missed out on in the show due to time and this fic is delivering! also, it’s fascinating to have a fic that mara features so heavily in. i’m loving the backstory that’s coming through about her and all the royal lineage stuff. it’s heartbreaking and heart warming simultaneously to see michael interacting so freely with his mum. overall, this fic is sweet, soft, and addicting. i can’t wait for more chapters!

Liz gave him a look, tipping her head to the side so that her hair fell over her shoulder, and from the glint in her eyes, Alex knew that he was caught out.

"You're here to see Michael, aren't you?" She asked, her voice dropping down low, thankfully, that Alex could only hear because he was leaning all the way in.

Alex gritted his teeth together again, a bad habit of his.

"Yeah," he muttered.

Alex goes and visits Michael at his frat house.

comment: sometimes you just have to read a no-aliens, no-drama, set-in-a-frat-house college au. this one’s all happy, sweet and fluffy, just two boys figuring out how to navigate the fact that they’re totally into each other. this fic’s good for when you just want to soak in sweetness and light with none of that heartbreaking angst. also i’m absurdly fond of the way the author described each character? even liz’s short cameo had me smiling. please go and give this slice of joy some love!
