Hey it's me the cisgender who kept asking about queer. I was thinking back about the whole post and I realised that the way you were talking about it was like The word was used by the queer community first and then only got used by bigots as a slur. Is there any material I can read up on about this or can I trust Wikipedia on this one?

I believe Gay New York by George Chauncey touches on the way "queer" was used specifically in the NYC mlm scene of the 1920s

Tbh, I'm not sure who used it first and for what reasons, but I also don't think it matters what way a word was used first? "Gay" used to mean "sexually promiscuous" once upon a time, at another point in time it meant "happy" or "carefree". Some words have a long and complicated history and people can personally resonate with different parts of that history.

What bugs me is the way people single out "queer" as if the bad parts of its history and the negative experiences they may have had with it outweigh the good history and the positive experiences other people have had with it. The people who do this largely wouldn't dream to act that way about any other word people under the rainbow claim as an identity, such as "gay".

(Now, I unfortunately cannot find studies abt this, but I believe it's also been found that nowadays, "queer" tends to be preferred by people who are seen as less "acceptable" by those who peddle respectability politics, which puts the pushback against "queer" as a term into a pretty insidious light. Add in the involvement of TERFs in starting the "queer is a slur" movement and I think you can see how even people who got sucked into this because they were hurt and didn't mean to hurt anyone else can do a lot of damage to the most vulnerable members of this community by feeding into this anti-queer movement, not to mention the people deliberately causing harm.)

Yesterday/This morning I had a bit of a breakdown, realising how fucked I was and how difficult the next few weeks were going to be for me, and I had some really dark thoughts.

I’d like to thank those who came to talk to me, make me think, smile or laugh because you guys helped me get rid of a bit of my dark cloud.
