Twenty Boss Fight Books for $15 ⊟
Not only is the $15-plus tier on this Boss Fight Books Humble Bundle a basically irresistible eBook deal -- it’s almost every book ever published by the company -- but even the $1 tier includes ZZT by Anna Anthropy, one of my favorites in the series.
In 1991, long before Epic Games was putting out blockbusters like Unreal, Infinity Blade, and Gears of War, Tim Sweeney released a strange little MS-DOS shareware game called ZZT. The simplicity of its text graphics masked the complexity of its World Editor: players could use ZZT to design their own games.
This feature was a revelation to thousands of gamers, including Anna Anthropy, author of Rise of the Videogame Zinesters . ZZT is an exploration of a submerged continent, a personal history of the shareware movement, ascii art, messy teen identity struggle, cybersex, transition, outsider art, the thousand deaths of Barney the Dinosaur, and what happens when a ten-year-old gets her hands on a programming language she can understand. It’s been said that the first Velvet Underground album sold only a few thousand copies, but that everyone who heard it formed a band. Well not everyone has played ZZT, but everyone who played it became a game designer.
One of the strengths of Boss Fight (as exemplified in this book) is its synthesis of historical overviews of each game with personal experiences. I know the games I know better, and by reading, I feel like I know the games I haven’t even played.

Queen Mary or Queen Scary
In the article “The Queen Mary… Haunted?”, the author, Devlin Westbrook, shares his encounters with the supernatural on the Queen Mary ship. The Queen Mary sailed her maiden voyage on May 27, 1936 and sailed again during World War II as a troopship. She was later remodeled as a passenger service and officially retired in 1967 and is docked to the port of Long Beach, California, serving as a tourist attraction, museum, and a hotel. It is a tourist attraction to many because of it’s reported hauntings and was dubbed one of the “Top 10 most haunted places on Earth” by Time Magazine. Westbrook explains that in Queen Mary’s engine room, the room’s famous ‘Door 13’ squashed two or possibly more men to death. Specifically in 1966 it crushed an 18 year-old crew member, dressed in blue overalls, doing a routine watertight door drill and he has often been spotted walking down the alley before disappearing by door thirteen. There are also two swimming pools that are no longer in use on the Queen Mary, but women have been seen in 1930’s style bathing suits wandering the pool decks along with wet footprints leading to the changing rooms and sounds of splashing.

In his article, Westbrook states, “The tour guide took us to two of the most haunted sites on board: cabin B340, which is supposedly haunted by the spirit of a person who was murdered there, and the children's nursery, where people have reported hearing the phantom sounds of children playing and babies crying” (Westbrook). This cabin has many stories of haunted encounters recorded in the ship’s logs, dating back to 1967. People say the sink faucet turns on and off on its own, doors shutting by themselves, the bathroom lights turning on without explanation, and even covers being pulled off while asleep and “waking to see a dark figure standing at the foot of the bed” (Westbrook). Tourists that seek horror can stay in stateroom B340 and the hotel supplies things such as a Ouija board, tarot cards, and a crystal ball to heighten their paranormal experience for about five hundred dollars a night. Westbrook says he personally experienced something definitely otherworldly when he stayed the night in that room, “I heard Ms. Anthropy whisper quietly ‘Oh, thank you’. When I came out to see who she was talking to, she responded with awe. ‘Did you not just touch me on the shoulder?’ she asked. When I told her that it could not have possibly been me, she looked up strangely and then back at me” (Westbrook).
I actually personally stayed in one of the hotel rooms on the Queen Mary with my father last year. We didn’t stay in the infamous B340 stateroom, but we did see a lot of ghost stories framed and hung up around the ship. As my dad and I were eating dinner, we asked our server if he himself had ever experienced something paranormal. He informed us that the light in the kitchen would be unexplainably be on when no one was around when he personally turned the lights off himself. I didn't myself experience anything supernatural on the ship but we also didn’t stay in the haunted room nor go down to the areas where ghosts were spotted. I’m not sure if I believe that the ship is haunted but the copious amount of sightings can’t be ignored.
