I decided to do an elective rotation in pathology this year - I have no aspirations to be a pathologist, but it was one of the few electives that remained broad and didn’t force me to think “I want to spend an extra 4 weeks on smallies/ farm/ equine/ equine etc”.

I took pathology because I want to improve my pattern recognition for diseases. I wanted to improve some of my tissue handling, and my understanding of anatomy and what normal is (and normal abnormals). I wanted to gain some ability to recognise tissues and cells under the microscope (which I am severely lacking in).

I’m achieving those aims, but I’ve confirmed that I’m not meant to be a pathologist. I like the laid back atmosphere, the great working hours, and the people are great, but I hate the lack of clinical work up. I hate not seeing living animals. I hate not being able to make anything better. Surprisingly for me, I hate not talking to the owners. And I HATE looking down microscopes for hours a day - the PM room is great but microscopy gives me a headache, particularly the multiheader microscope, and I’m not motivated to look things up if it won’t make any difference to the patient (I should be - I’ve been in a funny mood this week).

Ultimately, this is a good thing - I’m learning more about myself and what I want from my life, and I’m convinced that this month will make me a better clinician. I’ll get there.
