they lived at the top of a hill in a trailer in a trailer park neighbourhood in laramie, wyoming so to say the least that fucking sucked for everyone involved

the trailer was so small that all 3 boys ended up sharing a room, gunner and wyatt sharing a bunk bed bc they cldnt fit 3 beds into one room it really was every childs nightmare bt they quickly grew used to it tbh

gunner was always more of an artsy child than invested in sports - though he does enjoy baseball and continued even to this day after their dad made him join SOMETHING in middle school - so he never rly earned their father’s respect, but he was always close with his mom since they had the same calm temperament

Summer had come and gone in such a rapid blink that Gunner hadn’t even had time to question it when the warm weather begun to bleed into a deeper chill. He’d never been fond of the cold, already used to a frost that cradled itself so deep into his bones it practically made up the marrow in its hollowed frames, but life had hit a stand still at this point. A stand still that Gunner had never been used to, one that made every day pass with ease instead of a usual dread clouding his brain and clutching at his throat. Nothing seemed as bad as it’d used to, now, not when it started to get colder, or when midterms began, or when his dad drunk called at 3 AM on a Wednesday morning, “Hey, Mr. Callavan,” Usually, Gunner left the greetings towards his apartment neighbours to, if anything, a shy wave, but he was wine drunk from spending the better part of the afternoon across the street at Lana’s. It showed in the grin on his face and the flush in his cheeks, Chinese take-out clutched in one hand and bottle in the other - Lana had insisted he take it with him after saying this was one of the first wine’s he’d found tolerable, assuring him she had plenty of her own. In a moment’s time, it almost came crashing to the ground when Gunner turned the corner, a struggle with yanking keys out of his pocket delaying the realization that a familiar face was standing just outside his door, obviously waiting for someone to answer, “Hi!” he blurted, all too enthusiastically, even if his features didn’t show it. He probably looked more shocked than anything, eyes wide and mouth gaping, opening and closing as he attempted to find more words, to say anything, feet all but glued to the carpet where he stood on, “Wha - uh. You’re not in Virginia?” As if it wasn’t obvious, “How... long have you been here? Why didn’t you text me? I would’ve told you to come to... I was across the street. At Lana’s, I’m - here,” Finally approaching, cautiously, like Jack would disintegrate with even the slightest breeze in his direction, Gunner dangled the keys awkwardly towards him between his ring and pinky finger, “You should - wanna come in?
