closed starter for @ofginjxints.
despite being on an extravagant cruise with ample opportunities for enjoyment, laura found herself sitting alone at the bar long after others had retired to bed or ventured off to explore different parts of the immense ship they had embarked on three days ago—her husband's ship. the mere thought of it made her want to roll her eyes in exasperation, but instead, she signaled the bartender and requested a refill of her gin and tonic, a drink as unremarkable as her current state of mind. the only silver lining of this trip had been the opportunity to bask in the sun and develop a radiant golden tan unlike any she had before, perfectly complementing her choice of evening attire.
when she had informed her mother about the trip, the woman had ecstatically suggested that it might be laura's chance to conceive and secure her husband's wealth. however, laura had long dismissed such thoughts. after all, there was no passionate connection between her and her husband, nothing that excited her about their encounters. in fact, being alone at that moment felt far more preferable than enduring his company.
as a fresh glass was placed before her and she lifted it to her lips, she noticed some activity in her peripheral vision. she turned around, hoping it wasn't her husband coming to claim her for the night, and was relieved to see the operations director, martin, if her memory served her correctly. "good evening, martin," she greeted, raising her glass in a toast-like manner. "if my husband didn't send you to retrieve me for the night, feel free to join me. you're more than welcome," she added with a sly smile.

@Racked: @LauraDern embodies Diane to stylish and sassy perfection #TwinPeaks
Laura Dern's Outfits Are the Best Part of the ‘Twin Peaks’ Reboot
Dern’s FBI agent Diane Evans makes wigs and bangles everything in the Showtime reboot.
By Abby Bender
Before this year, the fashion world of Twin Peaks, David Lynch and Mark Frost’s 1990–1991 bizarro soap opera/murder mystery, was clearly defined. The original show blended fashion elements of the ’50s and early ’90s to memorable effect, with characters clad in autumnal-hued sweaters, midlength skirts, and saddle shoes. With a Best Costume Design Emmy and several magazine spreads inspired by the costuming (including one in every cool ’90s girl’s favorite, Sassy), the show’s sartorial influence was cemented.
Tumblr media
Now, over 25 years later, Twin Peaks is back, and in its new 18-episode iteration, it’s stranger and more unsettling than ever. So far Twin Peaks: The Return hasn’t had a saddle shoe in sight. The fashion, for the most part, hasn’t stood out the way it did in the original series. That is, until episode six, which introduced Diane Evans, an FBI secretary recruited to help figure out what’s happened to Agent Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan), the lovable star of the original series who ended up possessed by a malicious, mysterious force. Originally, Diane was an unseen presence known only by Cooper’s address to a tape recorder. Now she’s embodied to stylish and sassy perfection by none other than Lynch muse and powerhouse actress Laura Dern.
Diane is first seen sitting at a bar smoking a cigarette, clad in a platinum bob wig, a black top with teal and gold embroidery, fuchsia and teal bangles, and a multicolored manicure. From her very first appearance, in which she delivers only a single line, one thing is clear: She’s the most dynamically styled character yet.

From her very first appearance, in which she delivers only a single line, one thing is clear: She’s the most dynamically styled character yet.
Tumblr media
Diane’s multicolored nails suggest a multitude of possible identities. Her style is designed to stand out among dark-suited FBI personnel. At one point, on a plane with fellow bureau members Albert Rosenfield (Miguel Ferrer), Gordon Cole (David Lynch), and Tammy Preston (Chrysta Bell), she wears a leopard-print trench coat, a print and style long associated with femme fatales. She’s the only one in the group this colorfully attired, and as evidenced by her prodigious F-bomb dropping, she’s totally over them.
Diane appears to be a woman who dresses for herself — the wig and manicure are quirky and self-consciously costume-like. Fashion in Lynch’s work often plays a nostalgic, fetishistic role: the saddle shoes are the stuff of ’50s teen fantasy, and Diane’s closest competitor for best dressed is a trio of bored Las Vegas cocktail waitresses who assist sketchy men while wearing matching shiny, powder-pink dresses. Diane, so long unseen (some viewers even doubted whether she was a real person) possesses a similar kind of uncanny appeal, as she now appears in a wig that’s both glamorous and concealing. We see her, finally, but we don’t know much about her — other than the fact that she carries herself with style.
Diane frequently wears fuchsia, a color that keeps reappearing in Twin Peaks. It’s been seen on various characters’ shirts and lipsticks and found in the décor, and has even seeped into some of the show’s more experimental, non-fashionable passages. In episode 11, at a meeting in a dreary brown office, she sits perched on a stool, wearing a dark green sweater and dark fuchsia flared trousers. She’s seated high above her male colleagues, and her outfit immediately stands out. There’s something poignant about Lynch giving Dern, a longtime collaborator since her role in Blue Velvet (1986), the best outfit. Even when the director himself is in the frame, it’s Dern who stands out.
Diane knows what she likes: we see her re-wearing tops and the trench coat, and she also has a pair of forest green baggy trousers similar to the fuchsia ones. The trousers have a Katherine Hepburn quality, and are paired with a sharply fitted blazer with a pointy multicolored neckline that mirrors the colors of the bangles and manicure.
Dern has had a very fashionable year on television. Prior to this, she starred in Big Little Lies, where her outfits appeared uniformly chic and expensive and included a fabulous cat-print jumpsuit. Twin Peaks, of course, is worlds away, and presents Dern in costumes that read more like a uniform. There’s some continuity with Dern’s previous television roles: Twin Peaks costume designer Nancy Steiner was also the designer for Dern’s short-lived series Enlightened.
Tumblr media
In her previous collaborations with Lynch, Dern has played the good girl in pale, prim dresses (Blue Velvet) and the vamp in skin-tight biker-babe garb (Wild at Heart). Apart from the unclassifiable Inland Empire, in which fashion isn’t quite at the forefront and she primarily wears simple, solid-color outfits, Dern’s looks in Lynch’s films have hewed closely to feminine archetypes, even as the narratives spin into weirdness.
In Twin Peaks, Diane’s look borrows elements of the vamp without projecting too specific an archetype. How did this long-unseen character dress during Agent Cooper’s initial trip to Twin Peaks years ago? When does she take off the wig? How did she land upon her distinctive fuchsia/forest green/mustard yellow/leopard-print palette? We may never know, but with just a few fleeting appearances, Diane has established a signature look and brought fashion back to Twin Peaks.

THE MEME FOR PEOPLE WHO LOVE HAPPINESS | Closed
35. my muse surprises yours with dinner
She’d spent most of the day in preparation, finding suitable stalks of corn, a radstag nearby that was already crippled and ripe for the slaughter… Normally she wouldn’t seek the beasts out, but this was a special occasion. Perhaps it was not something Hancock would recall, but it mattered to her. That was enough. He arrived just as she pulled the steak out of the oven, Shaun happily following in after- the ghoul must have caught him in the middle of playing or something, his cheeks were so flushed and his expression was still joyous. “Mom, mom, I caught a baseball!” Her son was almost immediately at her side, holding up the ball with pride- his hand was bright red, and she could tell that he had clearly not released it since the catch…“You know… Baseball gloves are useful for that.” Laura chuckled as she placed the stag on the counter, then ruffled his hair affectionately. “I made dinner for us tonight… I already told Preston so he could let the others know.” Although the settlement typically had dinner together on Sundays, there were other nights during which some settlers enjoyed sitting and dining together rather than alone; although Laura enjoyed attending these dinners most of the time, she preferred, just this once, to stick with her family for the evening. “Some radsteak, some corn on the cob… And some fancy lads for dessert.”

I won’t lie. As I write this post I am at the end of a mammoth post prep session in which I have prepared a rather small (not) 15 posts. Yes you read that correctly. 15 posts!!! Not all are original content. There is one re-post and some are quick cut and paste jobs for reviews from Mandie, but I still have to prep all the links, pictures etc, check spelling and basically stay awake. not easy given the fact that I am absolutely shattered.
Manchester and Edinburgh with work this week which allowed me to listen to a cracking audio book, but all this mucking around of y work schedule really plays havoc with my sleep patterns (when I eventually do sleep) and unsettles the dog, meaning I get treated to a middle of the night barking session which is always nice. Not. Really starting to feel my age this week.
After all of the excitement of last week I’ve very little of interest to tell you this week. I am still on a bit of a high from the whole best book blogs thing last week to be fair, at least I’m hoping that explains the light-headedness ;). This week has been mostly about work and reading though, which isn’t all bad as I’ve been needing a little down time to recharge the old batteries.
Book post wise I only got the one delivery this week but it was a very welcome one. Bad Sister by the lovely Sam Carrington courtesy of Avon Books. I loved Saving Sophie so I’m really looking forward to reading this one as I’m on the blog tour in a couple of weeks.
Oh. One bit of bookish news – I made 500 direct followers/subscribers on the blog. A big thanks to everyone who does follow and also to everyone who puts up with my record number of twonkish tweets while following me on Twitter. Your support is very much appreciated.
Book purchase wise, I was doing so well. And then I prepped Karen Cole’s book love post and ended up back on Amazon buying one of her recommendations … and a few others. I blame book love. It was nothing to do with me…
So, I ended up purchasing Kill Me Twice by Simon Booker, The Binding Song by Elodie Harper, Heroic Justice and Deadly Encounter by Mel Comley, The Language of Secrets by Ausma Zehanat Khan and Christmas at the Falling Down Guest House by Lilly Bartlett. On audible I purchased The Binding Song and Without Trace by Simon Booker.
Netgalley wise I may have picked up a few titles. Just a few. The Wicked Cometh by Laura Carlin, Class Murder by Leigh Russell, Silent Victim by Caroline Mitchell and The Deaths of December by Susi Holliday.
Reading wise I didn’t quite manage all I wanted to this week do I treat that as a fail. I managed three of my planned four books, but snuck in an audiobook on the side.
Books I have read
Now We Are Dead by Stuart MacBride
She can’t prove he did it. But she might die trying…
From the Sunday Times No.1 bestselling author of the Logan McRae series, comes a standalone spinoff featuring DS Roberta Steel.
Revenge is a dangerous thing…
Detective Chief Inspector Roberta Steel got caught fitting up Jack Wallace – that’s why they demoted her and quashed his sentence. Now he’s back on the streets and women are being attacked again. Wallace has to be responsible, but if Detective Sergeant Steel goes anywhere near him, his lawyers will get her thrown off the force for good.
The Powers That Be won’t listen to her, not after what happened last time. According to them, she’s got more than enough ongoing cases to keep her busy. Perhaps she could try solving a few instead of harassing an innocent man?
Steel knows Wallace is guilty. And the longer he gets away with it, the more women will suffer. The question is: how much is she willing to sacrifice to stop him?
Crikey. How in God’s name am I supposed to review this? One word. Brilliant. No. Actually. Two words. Bloody brilliant. I love the humour that flows through this book, no less that you would expect from Roberta Steele and her potty mouth. I really don’t know where to begin with a review but I’m going to have to figure it out as I’ve got to review for First Monday Crime. While I’m figuring that out, you can be pre-ordering the book right here.
Murder Game by Caroline Mitchell
A serial killer is playing a terrifying game of life or death with his victims. After he captures them, a countdown begins. He marks the time by sending clues to the whereabouts of the women he has taken in three disturbing images: alive, tortured, dead.
In a race against the clock, East London Detective Ruby Preston must play the twisted killer’s terrifying murder game and decipher the clues before more women die…
But this isn’t the first time the police have seen such a sickening crime. The notorious Lonely Hearts Killer, Mason Gatley, was put behind bars ten years ago for murdering six women in exactly the same chilling way. Desperate for more information, Ruby persuades her boyfriend, Nathan Crosby, to use his criminal connections to set up a dangerous meeting. Because to catch this killer, she needs to think like one…
But the closer Ruby grows to the dark and charming Mason Gatley, the more worried her team become. Is Mason really helping her catch the killer? Or is he lining Ruby up to be his next victim?
Fans of Angela Marsons, Rachel Abbott and Peter James will be hooked by this dark and utterly disturbing thriller, packed with twists until the final page.
Oh my life. What a cracking read – quite probably the best one in the series. Sad to see the end of the Ruby Preston series but what a way to bow out, tracking down a ruthless serial killer who is murdering adulterers. It is down to Ruby to convince the killers mentor and muse, Mason Gatley to help her before it is too late. The book is released on 31st October, but you can preorder it right here.
Absolution by P.A. Davies
When the Militia entered the peaceful village of Nyanyar Ngun, South Sudan in 1992 – amidst the backdrop of a bitter civil war – it wasn’t in peace.
Soldiers of the SFL committed untold atrocities in that small farming village, before finally razing it to the ground. From a line of terrified children, boys were chosen to become recruits of the Militia, whilst girls were taken for selling within a market of odious buyers. Those who weren’t selected were either left to perish or murdered where they stood.
In a field of high maize next to the village, sixteen-year old Jada lay hidden and afraid, witnessing the merciless slaughter of his parents and the capture of his sister Kiden; powerless to stop it, too frightened to try.
But now – tortured by grief, consumed with shame and driven by guilt – Jada must embark on a long & arduous journey to rescue his sister from a sinister world and earn his absolution…or die trying!
A rather intriguing tale, this follows young Sudanese boy, Jada, as he tries to track down his sister, a victim of trafficking as a result of the war in Sudan. Blending two of the most heinous wars in modern history, this book will take you from war-torn Germany, to the Sudan to good old Great Britain in a tale which highlights the real atrocities of war. You can order a copy fo the book here.
The Binding Song by Elodie Harper
A chilling debut for fans of Mo Hayder and Sharon Bolton, THE BINDING SONG takes you on a trip to Halvergate Prison. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to leave… ‘Splendidly unsettling’ John Connolly Dr Janet Palmer is the new lead psychologist at HMP Halvergate in a remote, bleak area of Norfolk. At first, she was excited by the promotion. Then she starts to see how many secrets are hiding behind the high walls.
A string of inmates have committed suicide, leaving no reasons why, and her predecessor has disappeared – along with his notes. The staff are hostile, the threat of violence is ever-present, and there are rumours of an eyeless woman stalking the corridors, punishing the inmates for their sins.
Janet is determined to find out what is really going on. But the longer she stays and the deeper she digs, the more uncertain she feels.
Halvergate is haunted by something. But it may be a terror worse than ghosts…
Oh my life. I picked this up on a whim as I am going to hear the author on a panel at First Monday Crime in a couple of weeks. I am so glad that I did. What a chilling and atmospheric book. And such a compelling and engrossing read. I loved it. Do yourself a favour and go take a look. My review will be posted next week but don’t wait. You can order the book here.
Busy old week on the blog with a mixture of book love and reviews. You can find all the recaps here.

@justicepursued sent ? for some muses I think would work!
Ok so I decided to do this for all of your muses -
Life is Strange-Based: Chloe & Laura for sure! I could also easily adapt Bridget into the universe, as well as Alia!
Mia  Celia has a RE verse!  Justain and Erec are getting some as well
Angela ok so we discussed Preston getting an Overwatch verse, and I am so down for that, I was also thinking Celia could work, as well as Bridget!

How to Survive a Weekend Without #TwinPeaks
JANELLE OKWODU July 1, 2017
It took 25 years for Special Agent Dale Cooper to escape the Black Lodge and for Twin Peaks to make its way back to television, but for fans of the show, it’s been time well spent. Last weekend’s mind-bending eighth episode, with its nuclear bombs, phantom woodsmen, roach-frogs, and teenage romances, left the audience with plenty to unpack. After an hour that moved breathlessly between dimensions and decades, the series director and cocreator David Lynch is giving viewers a breather between episodes. Yes, it’s plenty of time for newcomers to catch up on all the antics of Dougie and Janey-E or dive headfirst into Bob’s origin story, but for those who have been hanging on every new development, such an intermission can seem like torture. Here, a primer on how to survive the next nine days.
Watch Fire Walk With Me
Tumblr media
As the prequel to the Twin Peaks saga, Fire Walk With Me sets the stage for many of the events that occur in The Return. For those who only saw the two seasons of the ABC-aired supernatural soap opera, the changes presented in the Showtime series–a wealth of new characters, shifts in tone, and the increased importance of the Roadhouse’s musical lineup–might seem jarring, but Lynch’s 1992 film provides plenty of backstory to build on, including the story of Laura Palmer’s life before her murder. Want to know about Harry Dean Stanton’s enigmatic trailer-park resident Carl Rodd, or David Bowie’s mysterious FBI agent Phillip Jefferies? It’s all there.
Read The Secret History of Twin Peaks
Tumblr media
If any series could use a glossary, it’s Twin Peaks, but cocreator Mark Frost’s book, The Secret History of Twin Peaks does more than expand on the existing plot. Charting the progression of the town of Twin Peaks and connecting its origins to historical events, it creates an expansive mythology that involves Thomas Jefferson, Lewis and Clark, and the Manhattan Project.
Find the Missing Pieces
Tumblr media
Most deleted scenes are best left on the cutting room floor, but this is David Lynch we’re talking about. Most of the leftovers from Fire Walk With Me offer insight into several questions the show leaves unanswered, like what life was like in the Palmer household before things unraveled.
Stream the Roadhouse
Tumblr media
With nearly every new episode featuring a track from a Lynch-approved band, Twin Peaks has emerged as an ideal place for artists to debut new music. So far the Chromatics, The Cactus Blossoms, and Nine Inch Nails have all taken the stage at the Bang Bang Bar, joining Julee Cruise and Angelo Badalamenti as essential parts of the show’s atmosphere. Whether each song holds clues to the conclusion remains to be seen, but cryptic lyrics like those of Trent Reznor’s “She’s Gone Away” (“A little mouth opened up inside/Yeah, I was watching on the day she died”) only add to the mystery.
Get to Know the Latest Lynch Muses
Tumblr media
With a host of Lynch regulars—like Laura Dern, Naomi Watts, and Kyle Maclachlan—joined by an ever-expanding list of celebrities who pop in for cameos, Twin Peaks doesn’t lack for star power. Michael Cera’s turn as a leather-clad Wally Brando notwithstanding, many of the best moments of the show are thanks to the lesser-known cast members. With a new generation of muses including FBI agent Tammy Preston played by Chrysta Bell, the world’s least-attentive parent played by Hailey Gates, and Joy Nash’s mystical Señorita Dido, there are plenty of interesting performers to study up on before they land in their next Lynch project.
Obsess With Others
Tumblr media
If you’ve listened to every podcast, caught up on every rumor, freeze-framed every scene in search of clues, and exasperated friends and family, it’s time to head over to Reddit to lose yourself in hours of theories and banter.
Bake a Cherry Pie
Tumblr media
It might help. Eat with a damn good coffee.
