Blue Lock Twitter’s going nuts right now over the Kaneshiro Episode Nagi interview and I… Really just? Do not get why? He stated that while Reo and Nagi aren’t romantic, he was writing with that interpretation in mind and people are treating it like he’s shutting the idea down entirely… I think the writer of an extremely popular shounen sports manga, one with (let’s be honest) a predominantly dudebro, sports-oriented fanbase, not only encouraging the gay reading but saying that he’s writing scenes WITH that in mind… That’s huge? That’s huge actually???
In hindsight it both makes sense and is a huge relief- I really like the scene right after the Ubers match where Hiori teases Isagi about how Kaisagi’s trending on social media, but a less optimistic read (and one I considered and was honestly worried about) is that just being a weird, homophobic “this would never ever happen and lets have the characters dunk on Isagi for it too” joke. But with this in mind it’s what I really loved it as and am glad it’s intended to be, a nod to the readers out there who ship these characters and playfully encouraging it in a fun little in-universe joke, and I’m really glad that the writer of Blue Lock is so open to people shipping his male characters together
And like. As much as I would love ReoNagi to be explicitly canon, I never in a million years expected it to be canon in a shounen sports manga, ESPECIALLY one so mainstream worldwide like Blue Lock is. Knowing that the writer is acknowledging it, encouraging these kinds of reads and is even adding to it in the writing himself… That’s incredible, and it disappoints me a little seeing so many people upset and angry at him for this. I think you can be sad about it, but I view this as a wholly positive thing and I don’t think Kaneshiro has a single bad intent with what he’s saying in the interview
