wip wednesday - I didn’t think I wanted to join in on this day for my own stuff considering I’ve never posted anything original for this fandom, but I think this might just be the little boost I need from myself to actually finish the wips that I have sitting around. I am peer pressuring myself and holding myself accountable by posting this - or at least that’s what I’m telling myself. Most of the past 6 mths has just been me screaming to no one in a Google Doc, so here are some things I’ve been ruminating about over the last 6 months (and if my secret agenda is to get other people to write about it so I don’t have to? Then that’s between you and me).

Strangers Fake Dating AU // Julie x Luke

I’m a simple person. I see a prompt, I latch onto it, and then I completely miss the entire point of the prompt as my imagination goes wild for no real reason. This really was supposed to be a super short drabble, but it manifested into a 3k+ thing that isn’t even finished.

Julie’s not really sure what she’s supposed to do now. Nothing has ever prepared her for a situation in which she’s supposed to pretend to be a stranger’s girlfriend, especially if that situation involves parents. Does she continue this ruse? Can she come up with a quick enough excuse to tell this Luke character that she actually can’t stay? What if this is just all an elaborate plan to kidnap her? Has she been listening to too many true crime podcasts? Why does Luke smell so good? Does he know how to cook? Why does his shirt not have sleeves? What-

“I can hear you thinking from here.” Her head whips up at the sound of Luke’s voice, which is now at a whisper and kind of frantic. “I just- I just really needed to get my mom off my back, so I kinda need you to pretend to be my girlfriend. Just for the night. I swear I’ll make it up to you somehow.”

Julie studies Luke’s face and it’s nearly impossible to not cave under his gaze, which can only be simply described as ‘puppy dog eyes’. She finds herself smiling back, letting out a huff, “I hope you like lasagna.” And the grin that spreads across the boy’s face is enough for her to know that he’s incredibly relieved that she agreed.

“I’m Luke by the way. Luke Patterson.”

(Okay, he’s kinda cute. And no one this cute is a serial killer. Right?)

She gives a small smile back, “I’m Julie.”

5+1 alive!Juke AU // Julie x Luke

Inspired by paper - LANY

This is one of the first things I ever felt the urge to write down back in September because I love exploring the idea of how two people can appear to be the perfect relationship on the outside, but are actually fighting their own demons. Especially when it comes to celebrities and people who are in the spotlight. It’s basically a 5+1 fic about the moments from other people’s perspectives who happen to orbit around Julie/Luke that all revolve around paper. My outline for this is so long because I can’t manage to narrow it down, and there’s zero cohesiveness but I do have little things jotted down.

“Hey little man,” Luke’s knelt down to match his 5 year-old height, and a hand extends out to him for a high five, “What are you doing here?”

His eyes flicker to the left, towards his own apartment door, where his mom is giving him an encouraging nod. “ I- I just wanted to-” he stutters and finds himself looking at his feet as he shuffles back and forth on the spot. “I- I drew you guys something!”

He shoves the paper out towards the older boy in front of him, but doesn’t look up.

Reincarnation AU // Julie x Luke

I had a random thought in December about how magical it is that Julie and Luke are so tied to one another that their love transcends time and space, which will always lead them back to one another. I remember reading a book a long time ago about how the main character is fated to die at a certain age, and that kind of sparked this little idea. I can’t bring myself to actually plot out every single timeline right now, but I did manage to write a little bit.

It will never be as complex as Rosie’s idea and all the wonderful additions in the link here, and I don’t really plan on it being anything more than a small idea. But I really do still think someone should write some sort of reincarnation AU cause I’d hop on that so fast!!

“Okay- that’s not- Luke. You seriously just ran away?”

“What was I supposed to do Alex? We all know how this ends.”

His friend looks at him, face painted in understanding and he sighs, “Yeah. Yeah, we do.”

Because it’s true, Alex does know, so does Reggie and Bobby. Most importantly, so does Luke. It’s the exact same tragic love story every time.

Call it a curse or fate or destiny. Maybe it’s because Mercury is in retrograde. Whatever. It always ends the same way - with a heartbreaking goodbye, a whisper of the promise that they’ll find each other again, and the possibility of a happy ending. He’s said the same goodbye at least 734 times, but it’s not like he’s counting or anything. Fuck the universe and its mystical ways.

Competitive Alex // Alex x Willie

No real thoughts or reasons for this other than I just think I self-projected my need to play board games with people in real life into a fic. And maybe a little bit of my competitiveness onto Alex and then threw in Willie because I think he would be able to handle it while also finding it endearing. I also have written nothing about the actual competitiveness, it’s just 2k words of Alex crushing on Willie.

“Wait,” his eyes dart between the three boys, “You both know Willie? How come I’ve never met him?”

His roommates look at each other, and there’s a smirk on Luke’s face when he says, “Actually Alex, I think you have. Remember that time you got really drunk after one of our shows?”

Oh no. He really hopes that it’s not the time he’s thinking of, so he tries to sound nonchalant. “You’re going to have to be more specific, Luke.”

“The night we played at that tiny bar at the edge of the campus! We got paid in those tiny colourful shots?” He doesn’t really know where Luke is going with this, so he’s slowly nodding along. “And you were super upset that the hot dog vendor at the end of the street was closed?”

Dear Julie, Love Mom series

I made myself sad with this thought when I first watched the show and was talking to my friend about how I think that Rose would’ve left messages for the Molina family, especially when we found out that Wake Up was actually from her mom. I wrote a bigger explanation for it here.

Anyways, I started with the one for Julie’s wedding and it kind of became an 8k monster with three different POVs?!? As much as I love how I wrote this, I feel too unsure about my writing to share it in full, so you will get carefully selected looks alkfe. (I’m also kind of stuck on some of the more emotional scenes and I may or may not have procrastinated by photoshopping a moodboard for it.)

Excerpt 1 (Julie POV): A look into where I’m going with this whole letters from Rose thing.

The key clicks into place, and with a turn, the latch falls open. She’s not sure what she wants to find in the box, and she’s too scared to think about it really. All she knows is that this was the sign from her mom that she was waiting for all week, and in true Rose fashion, her mom had managed to give it to her, even if at the last second. Her dad turns the box to face Julie, and gestures to her to open up the lid.

Tucked inside is a VHS tape, the words ‘For Julie, on your wedding day’ written in her mom’s cursive on the cover. Some loose glitter and confetti fall back into the box as she reaches in to pick up the tape and turn it over in her hands. There’s a little purple butterfly etched on the back, the same one that’s been drawn on all the other messages that her mom had left her. Her finger automatically finds its way, tracing the shape of the small doodle.

“Do you want me to leave you alone, mija?”

Excerpt 2 (Julie POV): This part has absolutely nothing to do with the main plot of the story, but it self-inserted itself into this fic after @tangledstarlight and I talked about You’re Still the One by Shania Twain being their first dance. This whole scene came to me at 4am one night and might be the most self-indulgent thing I’ve ever written.

They knew that when they had asked Reggie to be in charge of the first dance performance, that they (and Alex) weren’t allowed to veto any of his ideas. Luke had warned Julie that that would be a mistake, but the giddiness that radiated off of Reggie when she had told him he could have free reign was worth it. She just hadn’t thought that he would actually take it to heart and run with it.

Sure, they had chosen You’re Still the One by Shania Twain as their first dance song, and sure it was more or less a country song, but she didn’t really imagine that she’d be staring at her adoptive brother, Carlos and her Dad wearing cowboy hats and boots at her wedding. They had somehow managed to ditch their Flynn-approved suit jackets and were sporting a taupe-coloured suede-textured vest over their dress shirts. If she looked closely, she could see that they had somehow also found some gaudy looking bolo ties with a matching set of ornamental clasps to wear. When she envisioned her wedding, she really didn��t expect that her first (public) dance as a married couple would be a full-on Western themed occasion. The only exception was Alex, who had settled on his cajon in the back, still in his pink suit, eyes rolling when she met his gaze. But even she knew how there was no real annoyance in the blonde’s reaction or else he wouldn’t also be wearing one of the tacky ties around his neck as well.

“I’m gonna seriously kill him.” She hears Luke grumble under his breath, only low enough for her to hear. But she’s still too busy giggling to actually be mad, and she knows that Luke isn’t really going to kill Reggie. At least she doesn’t think so.

Excerpt 3 (Luke POV): Idk man. My mind went “What about Luke?” and I said “You’re right!! What about him?!?”

He doesn’t realize that he’s just been silently staring at the woman in front of him, until a gentle voice breaks him out of his thoughts. “Why are you looking at me like that?” Julie’s peering at him from under her eyelashes, a curious look on her face.

“You just-” he gives a little shake of his head, trying to come up with the right words. He wants to tell her she’s beautiful. Stunning. A wicked beauty. But she’s more than that - she’s almost angelic. “I can’t believe you’re my wife.”

“Luke, we’ve been legally married for like, a whole year.” Her lips are quirked up in a grin, amusement in her voice. “You’ve only just realized that now?”

“That’s different.”

“Yeah? Different how?”

This feels a little strange to post and a little like my inner self seeking validation but let’s not talk about that.

Okay, a couple days late, but in honor of HDL’s birthday, have some random triplet headcanons (plus a few for the other kids just for the heck of it).

Huey:

Middle name is Humperdink, after Donald and Della’s paternal grandfather (I figure, since Donald went to Hortense’s side of the family for Dewey’s middle name, he’d want to give some tribute to Quackmore’s side as well). Huey has a full lecture ready to go if anyone finds out and starts teasing him – explaining about the importance of the tradition of keeping ancestral names alive, and how the name was a perfectly fine and respectable one in his great-grandfather’s day… but in situations where he has to give his full name, he’ll still usually just abbreviate it to Hubert H. Duck.

As an adult, when he has a child of his own, he struggles with parenthood at first, due in part to trying too hard to emulate Donald, wearing himself thin to the point of hysteria by taking on everything and prioritizing being constantly present for his child at the expense of his own emotional health and self-care. Donald eventually has to have a talk with him, gently reminding him that he’s not in the same position Donald was, that he has a huge support system of friends and family to lean on, and that he doesn’t need to make the same kind of sacrifices that Donald did when raising them.

Dewey:

Gains something of a “business” rival in Alastair Boorswan, who retains a grudge against Dewey for his part in the failure of the Darkwing Duck movie. He doesn’t go full-on Don Karnage or anything, but he’ll try to sabotage any of Dewey’s performances and internet video projects. It is entirely, almost pitifully, one-sided – every time Boorswan pops up like ah-HA now at last you’ll PAY for ruining my masterpiece!, Dewey barely remembers who he is.

Starts developing his first crush, a year or so after the finale, on Gosalyn. He does eventually work up the courage to ask her out, and they date briefly, but Gos never ends up developing any feelings for him beyond the platonic. Eventually, after seeking some advice from Launchpad (who was thrilled that his best friend and daughter had gotten together, but understands through much personal experience that some relationships just aren’t meant to be), the two have an amicable break-up, Dewey goes and has a good cry in private, and they’re a little awkward with each other for a bit, but the two of them both end up feeling like their friendship is stronger for the experience.

This is the beginning of a trend for Dewey, who follows in Launchpad’s example of retaining healthy, meaningful friendships with all of his exes. (Louie calls it unnatural.)

Louie:

In part due to his habit of stress-eating, combined with his dislike of physical exertion, Louie ends up putting on a little more weight than his brothers in their teen years. At first he’s very insecure about it – he’s already getting hit with the rest of the puberty troubles, and this just seems like one more thing to dislike about his body. As an adult, he remains a bit chubbier than his brothers, but he’s much more self-confident about it. He even uses it to his advantage, letting people underestimate him and assume he must be out-of-shape just because he doesn’t have a classically “fit” body. (He generally is less in shape than his brothers, but he does still enjoy his regular swims in the Money Bin, which requires a certain athleticism.)

Never has nor particularly wants kids. He’s perfectly content being the “fun uncle” of the family; he can just introduce his niblings to Ottoman Empire, tell them all the embarrassing stories about their parents, sneak them extra candy, then hand them back off to his siblings to deal with while he relaxes and enjoys the perks of not having to actually raise them.

Except, of course, much as he’ll joke about “buying their love” with candy and presents, he does love all his siblings’ kids to bits and pieces, and will reluctantly step up and be the adult when it matters. One time, he was the only authority figure available to be the disciplinarian during a fairly serious misbehavior incident... and it was in that moment, while recovering from the looks of betrayal as he scolded and doled out punishments, that it suddenly hits him: Oh, crap, this is what I put Mom through with the Timephoon incident, isn’t it? Ultimately, though, while the kids remain mad at him for a while, they do end up respecting him more in the aftermath, which makes him feel like he’s at least doing better at the uncle thing than Gladstone did.

Webby:

Once they’re back home and have had some time to sit down and process everything after “The Last Adventure!”, Scrooge and Webby have a long, candid talk about how they want to move forward with what they now know about their relationship. Among other things, Webby admits that, while it felt right to call him “Dad” at the Library, putting a title to this newly-discovered connection, since then she’s been finding it a little awkward when she’s tried calling him that in her head. He’s always been a father figure to her one way or another, but in her head for the past year or so he’s been “Uncle Scrooge,” and that’s what her brain defaults to now that things have settled down. Scrooge, in turn, admits that while he was deeply moved when she called him that and certainly loves her like a daughter, he finds it difficult to think of himself as a “dad” at his age.

So the two of them agree that, much like how Donald is “Uncle Donald” to the triplets but everyone knows what he really is to them, Scrooge can keep being “Uncle Scrooge” to her and it won’t diminish their relationship. Moving forward, they still occasionally use dad/daughter terminology, but generally save it for special occasions… aaaand occasionally when Webby’s in a particularly Louie-ish mood and wants to get something out of him.

More than once after the reveal, the boys jokingly call her “Aunt Webby.” (Even Huey, though he always can’t help but point out that they’re technically first cousins once removed.) Her response is, “No.”

Violet and Lena:

(This one’s actually kind of semi-canon – as in, it never happened on-screen but was shown in the “Meet the Sabrewings” mini-story that Frank Angones contributed to that one zine, plus mentioned in one of his tumblr responses.)

Violet’s chosen parental titles for Tyrian and Indigo are, respectively, “Father,” and “Father”. She doesn’t see why anyone should find that the least bit confusing. (“They are each my male-identifying parental figure; i.e., a ‘father.’ Referring to one of them by an alternate diminutive title seems rather arbitrary and redundant, to be frank.”) Despite this, Ty and Indy can always tell which one of them she’s referring to, even without any context, just by her subtle vocal inflections that no one else can pick up on.

It takes Lena a while before she feels comfortable referring to them with any sort of parental designations. Even after she’s officially adopted, for a long time she’ll call them by their names or just “you guys”. It’s a special moment the first time she calls them “Dads”, but once she finally gets to that point, she settles into it and calls each of them “Dad” more regularly (if she needs to distinguish, she’ll just use their names).

Boyd:

Though Gyro does keep the offer open, Boyd never feels any desire to transfer his consciousness to an “aged up” body, even as Huey and the others grow up around him. For the most part, he completely avoids all the angsty “immortal child who can’t ever grow up” tropes – he likes being a definitely real boy, fought hard to be acknowledged as such, and doesn’t feel like an adult body and programming is something he needs to be happy.

That said, he does eventually become something of an adult legally – he still gains life experience and becomes more self-sufficient now that he’s actually being given the opportunity to live for the first time – and at that point views his childlike body as simply equivalent to, say, being a little person, and his childlike mindset just one of the ways he’s still “wired differently” from his peers. (Huey’s continued friendship helps a lot in that regard – he never treats Boyd as anything other than a friend and equal, no matter the disparity between their apparent ages.) He eventually ends up working as a scoutmaster for the Junior Woodchucks, where he excels with the younger kids (while also earning several PhDs and becoming one of the most popular lecturers at Duckburg University).

 Born (to Be) Free

So in the weeks before Frozen II came out, I was among the fans who heard leaked news about the ending. Mind you, I came across it once and never looked back, but all I do remember is it saying something that Elsa became a spirit and left Arendelle in Anna’s hands with the latter as the new queen.

Now I did get briefly upset over this news because it sounded like Anna and Elsa would be separated for good, which would hypocritically go against and be a major contradiction to how the first film ended, with the two being together again and trying to mend their broken relationship. But I decided to give Disney the benefit of the doubt and not jump to conclusions. I trusted that they knew what they were doing and decided to wait until the film finally came out before I made any final decisions about my feelings towards it, including the ending.

And in short, while I initially wasn’t crazy about Elsa abdicating and Anna becoming queen in her place, after watching Frozen II a few more times, I have come to believe that both Elsa and Anna truly are where they are meant to be.

One of the reasons why I wasn’t fond of Anna becoming queen at first is largely because, as we see in the first film, she severely lacks the skills and personality traits that are generally required or at least expected for a proper princess: decorum, grace, elegance, poise, articulation, and overall proper etiquette, all of which Elsa possesses. Furthermore, Anna is impatient, short-tempered, impulsive, and hyperactive, which also strongly contradict Elsa’s personality. Such traits may seem like major flaws for a queen to have since Anna will have to do things like attend formal meetings, be attentive in them, and think things through carefully and consider the consequences before making final decisions.

But after I watched Frozen II several times and thought about everything I saw and learned from it, the more I came to accept the idea that Anna IS more fit to be queen than Elsa. What she does lack in the aforementioned areas, she makes up for in other areas; mainly her love of people, especially those in Arendelle. As a gregarious extrovert, Anna thrives being in the company of people. She enjoys talking to people, and is always willing to listen to them and help them out with their problems and woes. Numerous times throughout the first film, she proves herself to be an extremely caring, loyal, selfless, and loving person by putting the safety and well-being of others before her own. These actions also demonstrates her great loyalty and admiration, especially in Elsa. Anna has also demonstrated good leadership skills and judgment in crises, which help her to overcome obstacles. Having grown and matured in the three years since the events of Frozen (but still maintaining aspects of her personality), I think by the time Frozen II happens, Anna has learned from her past mistakes and experiences enough to make improvements on herself to do her role as the new queen very well.

Contrary to Anna, though, Elsa is not and never has been much of a people person. Now that doesn’t mean that Elsa is unfriendly or doesn’t care about her kingdom and people; she does, tremendously. We see that Elsa is very warm, kind, selfless, and caring towards her people whenever she interacts with them. But she is also a very shy and reserved introvert. Despite having grown up isolated from the outside world and Anna, Elsa does enjoy moments of solitude. She enjoys having her freedom and takes solace in having time to herself. She only truly likes and feels comfortable being who she really is while in the company of Anna, Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven. They are her family, and she loves them more than anything. But as an introvert, Elsa dislikes being in the spotlight, being the center of attention, and being among big crowds of people with all the focus on her. Elsa also has a strong desire for independence, to do things alone and without much, if any, help. She is also very uncomfortable having others depend on her. This is particularly displayed when she initially tries to dissuade Anna from going to the forest with her, and then sends Anna and Olaf away so she can go to Ahtohallan alone.

So why does Elsa decide to remain the queen of Arendelle by the end of Frozen, particularly since she did not return by her own free will in the first place, but because Hans had captured her and brought her back?

Because after ending the eternal winter, and Arendelle saw that her powers can be used for good, Elsa felt obligated to stay because of her default role as the heir to the throne of Arendelle. She was crowned queen and she has a responsibility to fulfill as a ruler since she is of age. Simple as that.

Growing up, Elsa was taught to repress not only her powers, but her true self by putting her future duties, obligations, and responsibilities as the next ruler of Arendelle first. Once the people see that Elsa’s powers can do good and that she’s not a dangerous monster as they initially believed, Elsa has started to let go of her insecurities and let down her walls by showing people the real her. Over the next three years, as shown in both Olaf’s Frozen Adventure and Frozen Fever, Elsa becomes a much-respected, beloved queen of Arendelle.

And while the final minutes of Frozen and some moments in both shorts show Elsa being happy and doing her job as a leader well, you couldn’t help but wonder if she was truly happy and comfortable with her place in Arendelle. When we first see Elsa as an adult in Frozen II, she is out on the balcony, daydreaming and looking towards the sky before she is startled by Kai, who tells her that a group of people (most likely dignitaries or other such important people) are waiting for her.

Again, Elsa only stayed in Arendelle by the end of Frozen and subsequently took up being queen because she was essentially forced to do so by default. She didn’t ask for this job, it was an obligation forced upon her since the day of her birth. Being the oldest daughter of Agnarr and Iduna legally makes her the rightful heir to the throne. It is a commitment she must do by law, without question, and Elsa knows this. Between that film’s ending and the earliest scenes of Frozen II (including when she sings “Into the Unknown”), it seems that Elsa considers her life situation to be all or nothing: she either abandons her leadership role and her family in order to be completely true to herself, or she takes up her part as queen while simultaneously forcing herself to conceal everything about who she really is, since being her full self goes against what is expected of her as a ruler.

In other words, Elsa feels she HAS to be ONLY who she is EXPECTED to be, not who she REALLY is, or she’ll lose everyone she loves.

Following her first appearance as an adult, the movie unfolds to the scenes of “Some Things Never Change”, the group playing charades, Elsa hearing the voice and feeling distressed about it but refusing to mention it to Anna, then her singing “Into the Unknown” after hearing the voice again. During these scenes, Elsa is happy because she is spending time with her family, and her people love her, trust her, and have accepted her for her abilities. But at the same time, she’s not content with herself and her place, She feels that ruling Arendelle is not her true calling in life, and I don’t say this just because having her powers makes her feel this way.

Elsa’s feelings of dissatisfaction of being queen is especially stressed when she sings “Into the Unknown”. In being queen, part of her responsibilities include the Arendellians relying on her to give them guidance and advice, to protect them in times of crisis, to help them whenever problems occur. As I said above, Elsa is not comfortable with having people depend on her so much. I think it’s because she almost always puts her entire kingdom’s needs before her own, which at times she doesn’t hesitate to do because she is that benevolent, Yet she’s not always happy to do it because then she constantly puts her own needs and desires last. In putting herself last so much, Elsa feels dissatisfied because she is not always being true to herself. But if she doesn’t put others’ needs and desires first, then people may see Elsa as just selfish, and she doesn’t want her people to think that poorly of her (since it’s far from the truth) as a ruler or as a person in general.

Furthermore, being the only one in her family AND her kingdom who has powers clearly makes Elsa continue to wonder if she is really where she is meant to be, or if she’s meant for something bigger, for an entirely different purpose. When the voice started calling out to her and persists, Elsa believes that it has something important to tell her about her powers, that it might have answers about herself and if she is truly meant for another place in the world. But she only resisted at first because she didn’t want to leave her family (”Everyone I’ve ever loved is here within these walls”), not because she had a role to fulfill. She never even mentioned her commitment as the queen. 

By the end of the film, Elsa has found all of the answers. She has learned about where her powers have come from and discovered her true calling in life as the fifth spirit, the protector of the Enchanted Forest. She is FINALLY free because she has realized her true identity and can now be who she really is without any limits or expectations. This doesn’t simply make her happy; it makes her ELATED, and more so because having her freedom, independence, and no restrictions or limits gives her no risks on losing the people she loves.

Even though Elsa lives in the Enchanted Forest now, the note given to her from Anna (courtesy of Gale) suggests that she regularly makes return visits to Arendelle to spend time with her family. As shown when she arrived to stop the giant wave from flooding the kingdom, Elsa does not live very far away. She can come to visit anytime she wants and has a speedy method of transportation via the Nokk. And I don’t think she visits just on Fridays for charades or other games; I think Elsa comes to visit Arendelle several times a week to have meals with her family, holidays and special occasions in Arendelle, and even to spend the night sometimes. As long as she regularly visits her family but assumes her true role in protecting the forest, Elsa will remain true to herself; she will always be free and never really be alone. She and Anna are both exactly where they are meant to be.

Elsa is now exactly WHO and WHERE she is meant to be, and she has finally found the peace, joy, and contentment she has desired all her life!

Elsa’s character growth from Frozen to Frozen II is outstanding, and I am so proud of her for finding all the answers about herself and gaining her freedom and self-confidence! I love my girl so much! 😄❤️😄❤️😄❤️

And this is not only my first original posts on Frozen/Frozen II, but of ANYTHING of 2020, so what better way to celebrate the new year with a new analysis by yours truly?! 😁😁
