What is Onychomycosis?
Onychomycosis or nail fungal infection is one of the most common nail disorders (Diseases). Assesment of your nail in such cases needs to be done by an expert doctor in nail diseases & conditions. Dr. Rinky Kapoor is specialized in cosmetic dermatology & specifically looks at cosmetic solutions to nail diseases like onychomycosis.
Onychomycosis represents approximately 50% of all nail disorders. Onychomycosis is far more common on the toenail than it is on the fingernail. It may be associated with trauma to the nail and tinea pedis. The disease, which causes the nails to become thickened, hard to cut and often painful, is worsened by moisture, warmth, trauma, communal bathing and other activities that lead to the exposure of fungi. Common complaints of the disorder are pain, deformed nails and interference with daily activities.
- How does a patient with Onychomycosis present?
The patient presents with the following symptoms:
At first, the patient does not have any physical symptoms, only complaints about the way their nail appears
As time advances, it interferes with walking, standing, exercising
Pain, discomfort, paraesthesia, loss of dexterity
Inhibited social interaction because of loss of self-esteem
- What are the causes?
Onychomycosis is caused due to these classes of fungi: yeasts, dermatophytes, etc.
Following are the possible risk factors for development of Onychomycosis:
Poor health
Family history
Prior trauma
Increasing age
Participation in fitness activities
Warm climate
Communal bathing
Immuno-compromised individuals (eg. HIV, drug induced)
- What is the treatment?
Treatment for Onychomycosis involves administration of medications topically or orally. A combined treatment of topical and systemic treatment increases the rate of cure. Other treatments include Laser treatment, Photodynamic therapy and surgical removal of nail.
- How much is the cost of the treatment?
The expenditure for the treatment depends upon the type of treatment administered. Treatment with Laser is relatively expensive compared to treatment with medications. Laser therapies require multiple sessions. In general, a consultation with Dr. Rinky Kapoor would cost about INR 1000/-.

What Causes Fingernail Infections?
Tumblr media
Fingernail infections and toenail infections are caused by tiny, microscopic organisms called fungi (singular: fungus).
Although there are a variety of disorders that can affect the nails, more than half of all fingernail infections and toenail infections are caused by fungi, which are the most prevalent nail pathogens.
According to Medical News Today, “Around 10 percent of the adult population suffers from nail fungus infection.” What that means is that it affects 1 in every 10 people. That number jumps to 1 in 2 (50%) for people older than 70.
The medical word for a fungus infection of the nails is onychomycosis.

Why do fingernail infections happen?
Fungi live naturally on your skin. They don’t cause any problems on your skin until they proliferate beyond normal. When that happens, they can begin to infect your skin.
Fingernail infections happen when fungi find a small cut or crack in the skin surrounding your nail.
The under part of your nails gives fungi a warm, moist place to grow. From there, they can spread to other nails and the skin, once they have the opportunity.
Hence, a more frequent way to have a toenail infection, for instance, is by always wearing sweaty socks and shoes for long hours.
Men should especially remember that they sweat in their socks and shoes, if they wear them for long hours or perform tedious tasks on them.
That usually leaves the toes more confined to shoes, where they’re in a warm, moist environment. This explains why fungal infections affect toenails more commonly than fingernails.
Recommended: Stop fungal growth and reproduction. Kill nail fungus fast with ZetaClear antifungal drug

Nail Health continued... Don't forget to wipe with an alcohol wipe before applying wraps or gel and by making sure you have a slight gap around all the edges of the nail you can get a good watertight seal to make sure no moisture gets underneath. Moisture underneath nail coverings when they begin to lift is a way of encouraging infections so they should be removed and replaced regularly or as soon as lifting is noticed to make sure this doesn't happen. Protect your nails and hands from cleaning products or when working or gardening to prolong your manicure and keep your nails healthy. Don't use your nails as tools 😉 Keep any manicure /pedicure tools and equipment clean and dry and throw away anything which can't be cleaned easily. Don't share tools which can't be cleaned and disinfected. You can use Milton solution as a sterilising solution like for baby's bottles. Alcohol spray, wipes and alcohol gel for hands are all good for disinfecting. Remove any polish, wraps or gels by the correct method, ask me if you're not sure. NO PEELING, SCRAPING OR PICKING PLEASE!! 😊 Your nails are not bananas don't peel your wraps off 🍌🍌🍌 😂😂😂 Acetone free removers are generally thought to dry nails less and products with less toxins also mean we are putting less nasties into our body through our nails and skin. Hope this was useful and helpful 😊😘 xxx Check out my Facebook group for regular nail information and inspiration see linktree above #nailhealth #healthynails #healthystrongnails #nails101 #cuticlehealth #toenailhealth #manitips #cuticleoil #handcream #softhands #brittlenails #drynails #discolourednails #nailinfection #psoriasis (at Portsmouth)
