MISATO REPORTS - 30 QUESTIONS TO AI YAZAWA (1 to 8)

Hi, this is Misato. Today i've the pleasure and the great opportunity to interview Ai Yazawa, author of the series. Next you will discover things that were not known until now.

Question 1: Who is your favorite character?

I don't have a preference for anyone. I love them all. < i don't know how to translate "que no se diga" but it means that no one can tell her anything for preferring one character or another > (laughs)

Question 2: Which character is more difficult to draw?

Hachi. But lately she's got a sweeter expression and a more femenine body, so it's getting easier every time. Before se had a mix between a small-town girl and lack of femininity that made it more complicated. Regarding characters that I find it difficult to draw for personality reasons...nobody

Question 3: What character would you like to be your lover?

Um, as a lover i don't know, but to fall in love I would choose Takumi. Love, the more complicated it is, the more you fight for it. To get married, instead, maybe I would choose Kyosuke, because he has a < here it says "machista" which means "misogynist" but i think it could be a translation error and really meaning "masculine"> side (laughs). See, he gets his girlfriend to cook him fried eggs (laughs)

Question 4: Who would you have as a friend?

Shoji and Hachi. I would love to take care of Hachi. Well, I couldn't stop looking out for her. Shoji is the typical guy with whom you have a good time and that never gives you a bad face. It's important not liking i'm as a boyfriend (laughs)

Question 5: Who would you like to be family with?

I would like Ren and Reira to be my older siblings. And as younger siblings i would have Shin and Misato. Imagine what a scene of beauties! If Junko was my older sister, maybe she would be scolding me all day and it could be a bit annoying (laughs). I prefer taking care of others.

Question 6: Which boyfriend do you like the most for Hachi?

Well, i think it would be Takumi. You are going to think that I have a predilection for Takumi (laughs) Asano, Shoji and Nobu don't fit my ideal man idea.

Question 7: If you were a man, who would you have as a girlfriend?

Hachi without hesitation! I would gladly take care of her. Even if she put me in the middle of her hurricane, I wouldn't have a problem. I wish I could became Takumi so I could date Hachi (laughs)

Question 8: Is there a character with whom you feel identified?

There are parts of me in each one of them. People aorund me say that i'm like Junko, but i think i'm not. I'm too soft with everyone (laughs)

Johnny: He grew up eating pretty spicy food as both his parents have a high spice tolerance and he definitely inherited it. 8.7

Ryan: I headcanon his step-mother to have made sos ti malice for him a lot as a kid and for his favourite food to be sichuan cucumber salad so he has a pretty high spice tolerance. 9

Nooshy: Not as high of a spice tolerance as her younger brother by any means as they did not grow up eating much spicy food at all. 7.8

Ash: She will put hot sauce on just about everything she can and absolutely loves spicy food. 9.2

Meena: While she enjoys spicy food and is used to eating it, she does not have as high of a spice tolerance as some of the others. 7.5

Porsha: This girl has had spicy food like twice in her life and hated it both times. 4

Buster: He would think milk is spicy, let's be honest here. He will still eat spicy food because he pretends to have a spice tolerance however, but never gets further than like three bites. 2

Eddie: He has an about average spice tolerance and has a fair bit of spicy food but it's not like his favourite. 6.6

Nana: She loves spicy food and strengthened her spice tolerance during her travels as an opera singer back in the day. 8.1

Hobbs: He doesn't love spicy foods but has gotten used to it due to working for Nana for years. 6.9

Rosita: I headcanon her to have cooked a lot as a kid and learned her family recipes from her abuela as a young kid. As she got older she began experimenting more and modifying the recipes to her taste by upping the spice level in the dishes. 7.9

Gunter: He had literally never had spicy food before meeting Rosita and so his spice tolerance is currently extremely low. But it is getting stronger. 4.2

Marcus: I headcanon him to have had like zero spice tolerance as a kid but deliberately trained himself to have one as he got older and started dating Johnny's mum (the daughter of a chef) since he was exposed to spice a ton more. 8.6

Barry: Not only does he enjoy spicy food, he also enjoys torturing Stan by stocking up their apartment with spicy food only. Barry developed a spice tolerance after getting used to Marcus's cooking. 7

Stan: The odd one out of the gang, Stan's just never liked spicy food despite all the others loving it. 4.6

Clay: He loves spicy food and is always willing to try new food that others, especially Ash, offer him. 8.5

Mrs. Crawly: Mrs. Crawly would only season things with a pinch of salt and like a flake of pepper. 2.5

Hi, thanks for the ask!

I am not sure which interview specifically you are referring to. Do you mean the Yazawa interview from the Nana 7.8 Premium Fan Book (from 2003) or do you mean what I referred to as "Yazawa replies to questions around NANA" from the NANA Mobile Book (from 2008)?

If it's the former, would you message me your mail address (I hope that works through Tumblr) so I can forward you the translated interview from a now defunct scanlation group (as far I'm aware)? If it's the latter, I can have a look at what exactly it was and take some pictures from my French version for you... which you'd have to run through machine translation if French isn't your thing.

(I haven't looked around on the web recently to see if there are other versions or scans of the Japanese version floating about.)

Depending on timing, it may have to wait until October though.

AoS Finale

It is the end and I have too many things in my head and too many feels, so I am just going to put out there a “few” things I really love about 7.12 and 7.13. I tried to kind of sort it out by character.

(Warning: forget proper English, it does no exist here, or at least probably even well less than usually).

Mack

This is the end and we get to have the iconic association of Mack and his axeshot gun one last time.

Love his sassy answer to the chronicoms coming for their faces: typical Mack one-liner (and Sousa’s comment afterward). 

Him bounding with Sousa and showing him appreciation.

“Find me some duct tape”. I guess I appreciate comic relief Mack a lot.

Reunion at the bar with YoYo. awww

Director Mack building a Lola for Coulson, being with YoYo, being uncle Mack and all. Always there to be the SHIELD, leading his man. Love to see it.

Deke

When he imitates Fitz !!! Especially considering the fact that the posture is something that Deke actually unconsciously do quite regularly (something that many amazing “like Bobo like grandson” gifsets show perfectly). The scene takes very little time and it is cute and funny and a proof of the FitzSimmons Family bond. I love it so much.

When there are vibrations to open the door, Deke is in defense position to protect Nana in no time. Protective Deke

And then so sweet, and caring with his beloved Nana who is so lost.

Him figuring out what is the machine and proposes the plan to bring the chronicoms. Well played Deke.

CEO mode, I’m in charge of the operation vibe.

Mack telling him he is a great friends, thanking him, calling him agent Shaw and all.

Staying for the team and especially for FitzSimmons to have their happy ending and because he is competent with the tech. I wish we had more of a goodbye but time running out and all... He expressed that he could actually like being stuck in the 80s (7.8 I think), he found his place in this time and so he too can have a happy ending there, even if he does have to sacrifice seeing the team. 

the new guy in charge *what? oops* “yeah!”. It is SO Deke.

(I really love what they did with Deke in s7, especially as his writting has been a diffucult journey sometimes).

They did mentioned him being in another timeline and being missed at the bar ...

Sousa

Well, AoS is really good at dynamics and relationship but they really nailed wrtting ships. In only 11 episodes they manage to make Daisy & Sousa love interests in a way that neither felt forced or rushed. I was a bit skeptical at first but I have to admit they made it work. Partly thanks to the whole loop in 7.9 as it gives different opportunities and less risk on Daisy’s part as he will not remember. So I did like the Sousy part of the episode.

“Impressive” “Thank you” I just found it hilarious. 

Gentleman and very smart man: chronicoms becoming missiles. Hell yeah!

He got to be a part of SHIELD, see the universe and be with Daisy, so he is a happy man.

Coulson

Throwback to s2 (with the hand and) with Fitz’s tech against Gordon (Science biatch!)

We got to hear him say on last time the classic: I am Phil Coulson Agent of SHIELD

Smug Phil agains Sybil and all. Plus Coulson interacting with the villain is always good.

His relationship with May getting better by the minute.

Well, good news he does not feel like “dying” just yet, he enjoys the world, is crazy about Alya and all, I was expecting so much sadder but no! He got to be around quite happily!!

LOLA !!

May

Phil & Melinda sorting things out. Both wondering who they are, because they have been through so much changes, expressing their appreciation for each other even after all of those changes... It was time they had a bit of time to address it and I’m happy they made it and it was in a very Philinda way.

Huging Daisy !!!! and once she felt like it might have been to impulsive, Daisy reassuring her. (Daisy is so happy, smiling so much).

Her banter with Coulson

The Cavalery !!!! My fav thing about May in the finale. So much trauma, so much fights but she made it, she can own that name now, make it mean something else. That’s just... woaw powerful and beautiful moment.

someone other than Coulson calls her Melinda during the bar/annual reunion scene ! (i was shocked but happy they are family after all).

Saying she hates her job and complaining is such a May moment. But like Coulson says she loves it and somehow she seems to be stuck to find and take care of her own little ducklings from now on. FitzSimmons and Daisy gone well there is an academy full of potential agents to form and help becoming their best version of themselves.

She really insists about Coulson passing by and it seems like she really wants to be closer to him.....

YoYo

YoYo killing it is always a joy to see.

Her little exchange with Sousa

I think we got one last turtle man from her at the bar.

She got her happy ending, things going well with Mack, kills it as an agent. She does what she always wanted, changing the world for the better, saving lives, giving hope. It fits her so well. I love that she works with Piper and Davis. (7.8 was such a great episode and it gives her her time to shine, the whole bouncing back storyline is so beautiful).

Daisy

Her being all happy about the kiss with Sousa, she simply radiates joy and excitement and there is a playful side too.

Happiness and hug when she sees Deke! Okay her moto was saving my sister Jemma (SISTER JEMMA!!!!) so I was very pleasently suprised by her relief and warm welcome of Deke.

Any scene where she uses her power.

Talking about Jiaying and being lost with Kora.

Going straight to hug Coulson at the bar and then to May. I love when she embraces her daughter status

That fight against “Mister I am always in the tag”. Pure Agent Quake. And the last quake... damn. (Thank you Kora on this one though.)

Happy Sousy building a relationship. Still with SHIELD, helping Kora to find a place. The series is in a good part about her leaning who she is and relearning when everything changes, finding a family, a place and she does it for Kora... Happy Ending for Daisy !!!

That last talk with Coulson

Fitz

That he is THE threat to the chronicoms, the one constant that make them loose.

When Fitz appears! and then his joy and the whole team’s joy.

He is back with his accent and gestures. Trying to explain stuff and all.

He asks Deke to team up with him on the machine. awww

Fitz was so well prepared for the whole memory thing. It was geartly done.

we had time flashback and FitzSimmons scenes. 

the whole she remembers a bit of Fitz but not her feelings for him and then Fitz issaying that she forgot something that matters way more !!!!!! I mean he is hopelessly in love with her and he says that !!! Seriously such a magnificent proof of love for his little monkey. (because that left no doubt that they had a baby).

OUR EVERYTHING !!

When Fitz arrived in the bar having trouble working I was so disturbed but it is just his little monkey. and LITTLE MONKEY like it is everybody’s headcanon about Dad Fitz but we got to hear in the show !!!!!

Jemma

Costume and can I have one stuff when she saw Daisy (+ Daisy and Deke’s yes). Cute and funny bit in the episode.

Smell his hairs!!!! When she says UNSTOPPABLE!!!

She called Z1 home !!!

two becomes one and three becomes one when putting the 084 together because no way they don’t have a child. so yes I love it/

Jemma’s ring beeing the key is such a Fitz and FitzSimmons thing to do.

Enoch

loved every single mention of him or small apparition I love both.Enoch

when the chronicoms say as we have always been... that punch in the gut. (though it does not make that much sense)

His ending is way less happy but 7.9 gave him a beautiful one no the less and it took the time to do it properly, it makes me cry so much but it really is a special moment and they did no rushed the scene for which I am very grateful.

Piper & Flint

I was so happy when they appeared on the screen, even if we did not see them much, I was expecting less, so good suprise.

Just all the Piper in 7.13, felt good to have her back.

Flint at the academy !! (May is going to have to take care to new ducklings).

Alya

Well I love that she exists. The little family is the cutest, they are so happy to be a little family, all the uncles and aunt seems to love her so much too. FtzSimmons as parents are adorable (and unstoppable).They are just so happy with their little life together and their own perthshire cotage. And she seems a bit special in a very FitzSimmons way so... I love it!

Also, the whole doing her own fish is so funny and cute. Especially with Little Girl Jemma talking about her project to study some special kinds of fishes in inescapable and the little ref to it when her memories are still a mess.

Other stuffs

Young John Garrett (I like him in his few episodes in s7).

Kora “redemption” but like mainly because she was very clearly being manipulated and because of Daisy. it is less heavy on Daisy like that and in some ways she got another chance with her biological family and she can do for her what other have done for her.

084 scattered through time and in pieces to not be seen by Sibyl & cie. It’s smart, 084 is also a classic of early seasons (one of the first mission, Skye, the whole obelisk...) and Enoch

I like that they say “what we are fighting for several times” but never really explicit it.  (I think)

Happy endings for everyone !!! Honestly that does feel great. Plus, they are just happy to see each other again.

Selama mencari peruntungan di Ibu Kota Jepang, Hodaka harus tidur di jalanan. Merasa terdesak dengan keadaan, Hodaka kembali menghubungi Keisuke. Ia ditawari pekerjaan menjadi penulis majalah lokal milik Keisuke. Majalah itu membahas soal supernatural dan hal-hal aneh yang terjadi di sekeliling manusia.

Hodaka mendengar kisah soal pengendalian cuaca. Konon, ada seorang gadis memiliki kekuatan untuk menghentikan hujan hingga membuat langit cerah. Gue ngga pernah nonton film anime di bioskop, dan sekali lagi gue bukan vvibu hehe. Makoto Shinkai yang ngebuat gue beranjak ke bioskop buat nonton film ini, dan sayang banget kan kalo gue cuman nonton film ini lewat layar laptop. Pertama kali gue memulai untuk nge fans karya beliau setelah nonton Your Name (Kimi no Nawa) (2016). Itu aja gue nonton secara ngga sengaja di kelas pas mata pelajaran bahasa Jepang, dan gue sempet underestimate (maafkan).

SPOILER ALERT

Goosebumps.

Itu yang gue rasakan pas dari menit awal sampe menit akhir nonton film ini. Gue auto laper ngeliat makanan cuman sekadar ramen tapi berkat ditangan Makoto Shinkai, visual ramen jadi bener bener enak banget. Mengangkat legenda Jepang udah Makoto Shinkai banget, kalo di Kimi no Nawa tentang tukar tubuh antara Mitsuha sama Taki, nah kalo di Weathering With You tentang seorang anak perempuan yang bisa ngendaliin cuaca dan itu juga dia dapat karena setelah berdoa di kuil. Engga ada plot twist di film ini HAHAH, padahal udah ngarep banget. Happy ending. Ohiya, ada cameo Taki sama Mitsuha, semua penonton pada girang pas scene cameo itu termasuk saya tapi ceritanya mereka belum ketemuan antara satu sama yan lain.

Pros:

Udah ngga kaget lagi sama Makoto Shinkai, tangannya ajaib banget mau nangis, detail visualnya bagus banget. Setting tempatnya sesuai sama yang ada di real life. Scoringnya juga diisi RADWIMPS ya yaudahlah, ambyar. Satu album enak semua, berkali kali ngulang muter albumnya ngga bosen. Makoto Shinkai sama RADWIMPS emang ngga bisa dipisahin. Soal sisi plot cerita, menarik ngambil legenda jepang fantasi, trus juga Hodaka sama Hina ngebuat kita simpati karena background mereka yang sama sama ngga ada orang tua. Ceritanya ngga setragis kimi no nawa HAHA.

Cons:

Kurang klimaks pas bagian klimaks, akhir filmnya cuman bikin gue bilang HAH ini udah kelar gue kira masih panjang. Alurnya rada lama, trus juga orang samping gue mulai rada bosen pas ditengah tengah. Trus dikira bakal ada plot twist dikit dikit lah, eh lempeng lempeng aja. Bukan kayak Makoto Shinkai yang biasanya bikin nangis bombay pas nonton film ini. Ekspektasi gue terlalu tinggi kayak kimi no nawa, ternyata engga. Kalo disuruh pilih buat nonton ulang ini atau kimi no nawa, gue akan pilih kimi no nawa.

Two artists responsible for a couple of 2019′s most under-appreciated albums play tonight.

Ezra Collective, Lincoln Hall

Five-piece collective Ezra Collective is yet another addition to the burgeoning London jazz scene that’s produced horn-forward bands like Sons of Kemet. But whereas SoK finds its radicalism in empowering the oppressed through breakneck anthems, Ezra Collective lift themselves up. You Can’t Steal My Joy is more moody than hectic, ultimately celebratory of the small moments where happiness does creep in. “Creep” is the key word here; EC songs don’t tend to start with a bang but develop into one. “Why You Mad?” and “Red Whine” both begin with quiet bass from TJ Koleoso, the former giving way to Femi Koleoso’s cymball rolls, Joe Armon-Jones’ leading keys, and Dylan Jones’ bouncy trumpet riff, the latter segueing into a reggae melody. Elsewhere, “Quest For Coin” builds with the deliberation of techno, while the skittering drums of “São Paulo” set up a comparatively slower groove of Brazilian jazz.

Ezra Collective find that joy in the small elements, whether the opening piano of “Philosopher II” or the rock explosions of “King of the Jungle”, but they also thrive on collaboration. Yes, “Reason in Disguise” and “What Am I to Do?” find Jorja Smith and Loyle Carner doing what they can do in their sleep, sultry and soulful cooing and old-school realist rap, respectively. But it’s closer “Shakara” that truly impresses. It features Afrobeat collective KOKOROKO, thereby more than doubling the number of normal musicians on the track, but the two together sound like a single entity despite rhythmic overlap. When the goal is to hold your joy tight to your chest, the more, the merrier.

Sometimes we just need a good “fuck you”: a diatribe against someone, an aural assault, a shattering of expectations. Montreal-based Briggite Naggar provides all of the aforementioned with When I say to you Black Lightning, her second album as Common Holly. The album begins with her, in a delightfully petty state of schadenfreude, chiding someone escaping trouble and fleeing to Canada. “I’m sorry New York broke you / It cracked your stamina / I think perhaps it woke you / But now you’re lost in Cana-nana-nana-na-da,” she sings over tape hiss, guitar plucks, and atonal notes. Her voice travels with the guitar lines as occasional percussive booms and hand claps complement her facetiousness. The sounds are palatable because even Naggar herself admits, through her stories or those of others, that beneath the sneer is the same claustrophobia any person might experience in life. Working with co-producer Devon Bate, whose background is in electro-acoustic composition, she generates sounds from recordings of people talking, police sirens, and everyday objects clattering about. It’s effectively anxiety-inducing.

Take the one-two punch of “Joshua Snakes” and “You Dance”. The former features slinky guitar work interrupted by skronks. The latter, in contrast, starts with gentle acoustic picking. “Don’t be a-a-a-a-a-a-afraid,” Naggar sings. But when she adds, “Don't p-p-p-p-p-p-p-panic,” she’s practically begging you to do the opposite. Those same guitar lines from “Joshua Snakes” come back, and at this time, you realize you were unable to see the foreshadowing for what it was. The idea that the skronks, too, might reappear--and they do as Naggar sings, “Don't freak ou-ou-ou-ou-ou-ou-out”--is eerily reminiscent of a panic attack. I haven’t heard anything like it in a while. Then, though, all of the song’s elements balloon into a sort of interweaving beauty, and you realize that’s Naggar’s ultimate gift, to find solace in even the ugliest everyday problems. Even when she shares a cynical worldview on “Measured” (“I think we’ve been measured out for pain since birth”) or sees herself in the company of someone who enjoys to “Build your fire and watch everyone burn” on “Uuu”, she makes do. “I’ve got all my shame to keep me warm,” she quips with melismas on “It’s Not Real”. She could be referring to trauma and repression, but she could be accepting life for its imperfections.

Indeed, it’s clear that Naggar knows herself. She reveals her self-identified faults in “I Try”, whether looking “for certainty in older men” or forgetting to be present. Closer “Crazy Ok” gets its title from the refrain “Don’t leave me, I’m crazy, ok,” a word that misogynists use to belittle women but that Naggar reclaims for herself. (It’s actually inspired by someone else’s words.) The line starts out cutesy and chirpy but then explodes along with drums and distorted guitars, squealing, squirming feedback entering her space. She’s not afraid to go too deep in the abyss--it’s what she wants.
