BOTD: Double-crested Cormorant
Photo: Colin Durfee
"This dark, long-bodied diving bird floats low in the water with its thin neck and bill raised; perches upright near water with wings half-spread to dry. The Double-crested (which rarely looks noticeably crested in the field) is the most generally distributed cormorant in North America, and the only one likely to be seen inland in most areas."

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, but a frog in the hand is worth a picture and an iNaturalist observation.
Today was the fall version of the Scappoose Birding Excursion I lead for Portland Community College every semester except winter. We got to see TONS of cool birds at the southern end of the Crown-Zellerbach trail, from double-crested cormorants (Nannopterum auritum) and an osprey (Pandion haliaetus), to cedar waxwings (Bombycilla cedrorum) and sandhill cranes (Antigone canadensis). It was mostly Binocular Time, but the presence of TONS of tiny first-year northern Pacific tree frogs (Pseudacris regilla) was the perfect opportunity to pull out my little critter magnifier.
The big challenge was catching one without touching it with my bare hands. Amphibians' skin is very absorbent, and the oils in our skin can actually be harmful to them. Thankfully I was able to scoop this one into the clear plastic top of the magnifier and close it in safely. This gave everyone a chance to get an up-close-and-personal look at one of these cute little frogs. After a few minutes of celebrity, the frog was released back into the grass where we found it.
By the way, if you want your own nifty magnifier, I got mine at Acorn Naturalists.

Bird Fact #2: On March 21 2022 a double crested cormorant (Nannopterum auritum) swam 5 laps around Lake Ponchartrain over the course of two days because she felt like it. When asked to comment she said "Wheee" and "Yehoo."
