and vice versa, which Käärijä song do you think Johannes is going to cover and which would you like to hear the most?

Ooh, there are so many good options, especially knowing how intensely and variably the songs can be changed for the concept (My favourite example of this being Robin's version of Imus, which shares the chorus lyrics and the flute riff and nothing else with the original). A rap verse on any hotband song would already be a lot, TM.

I think the yellow album would make for some great Käärijä songs. Gold digger or Mun pitäis se jo tietää are definitely his vibe. On the other hand, Jere could go the complete opposite route and do one of the slower songs, really lean into those singing elements in there. Luotan tulevaan wouldn't surpriseme, tbh.

I know Johannes absolutely loves both Kot Kot and People's champion, so those are both on the table. Especially with how many clips of Johannes singing People's champion we already have, and lord knows they work on these covers for ages ahead of time... But never put it past Johannes Brotherus todo something silly, and go for like Takavoltti or something.

I'll be happy with anything. It is a dream they are in the same season.

Okay that's pretty good. Gotta appreciate how on top of making jokes about his fit, every time it is followed by so many gay jokes. Just so many. Does anyone have anything else to say about our guy?

Another thing I noticed is so many of the people get so up in his face and physical. Like actually grabbing him and getting close. (At least Keijo Usum apologized for it because yes, it's pretty weird considering Ahti was 17.) But Ahti doesn't really get close or physical.

Also I do have to appreciate the ones who manage to make good bars about his name. There is so much opportunity there and for some reason some guys didn't use it at all which is wild.

Love here how Ahti gets doubled quite a few times in his first verse, and just does not give any opportunity for it in the second and even drops a line aboutit. strategy strategy

Youtube has been recommending me the RAP SM 2017 battle rounds with Ahti and I finally caved and watched one. Caught between cringing intensely at some of the lines and being absolutely awed by Ahti's flow in freestyle.

But like in this particular video:

Him literally doubling his opponent and absolutely wrecking him because he managed to guess the rhyme before the end of the line, demonstrating both his skill and the opponents lack of creativity before he even started his turn

His body language the whole time, and the stark difference between his turn on the mic and taking the dissess

Him playing to the audience before even being a professional

Him having far less time on the mic and still winning the round.

Brb gonna go watch all of them now I guess.

i watched all of these as soon as they were recommended to me (which was Not after that long lmao) love him smiling before he delivers a good line LOL. i also find it extremely funny how pretty much everyone was dissing his outfit im 99% sure he did that on purpose. and bro loves the word todellaki

I'm sure you're familiar with more of the other vain elämää participants than i am, sooo what songs of theirs do you think would be great for johannes to cover? and also vice versa

I think I know more songs from the participants than I can think of on the spot, so there are probably plenty of good options I'll miss out on. Still, looking through it all makes me even more excited for the season.

Several pages of pondering under the cut

Now the easiest for me is Riippuvainen by Lauri Haav. There's something about it that has that kind of melancholy that works very well for Johannes, but it's still quite different from his style. There'd be a lot of room to make it his , and over all I'd just love to hear it. However, I think Johannes could pull off almost any Lauri Haav song. They have some very similar elements in their music.

For Viivi, I wouldn't be surprised if Johannes went for Aina. However, I'm not sure if Aina would have been out long enough to get picked, so that's in the air. I'm not really familiar with Viivi's discography, But I'd also say USA has the kind of humours lighthearted touch with hard hitting lyrics that would be Johannes' style.

Niw, Jonna Tervomaa is the first in the list with the kind of expansive discography that is really hard to pinpoint what one might gravitate toward. Skimming through it, I can safely say Johannes would do well on many of these songs, especially on the more recent ones. There's a lot of really lovely melodies and soft tomes, exactly the kind of stuff that Kuumaa works with a lot, but still a really different sound. Not so streamlined to the pop format. I know I'll love wwhatever Johannes picks from here. Listening to Kirkonrotat I'd like to hear that one though. I can hear how the violin would fit there. Or maybe something more hard hitting like Strippaa mulle taas. That would make for an amazing cover.

Now Vesta is one of those artists that I have heard a lot about but heard nothing from, so I can really make any guesses as to any song. However, she also has a softness to her music that Johannes will be easily able to work with. What will really make any cover interesting is how anyone is able to take, twist and interpret the very experimental choices and styles of her music. There are a lot of wild things there, and I hope all the others will take inspiration from it when arranging thier covers, because it would be a shame to do something plain with her music. Something like Kesäwau should not be reduced in it's style.

Pelle Miljoona is also a challenge to pick from, for two reasons. 1) he also has a massive discography under his name, which gives a lot of options. Number 2) he has been in a lot of bands and lineups, so a lot of music listed under him is not written or composed by him, and so out of the question. Over all, I do hope whatever Johannes does with his music, he challenges himself to lean into the alternative rock elements Pelle Miljoona is so famous for. Or at least do something out of the realm of what Hotband would do.

Then we have Mikki Kauste of Egotrippi fame. Egotrippi has a lot of very nostalgicc music for me. Whatever Johannes picks, I'll die. And if it is Älä Koskaan ikinä, I may get revived too in one go. If it's Matkustaja, everyone is obligated to read Some things are still unknown, especially chapter 15. You can also keep in mind that that cover will be official soundtrack for the fic. I'll just leave this comment from the author's notes here:

"Guess who had to scroll through the Finnish Wikipedia page for SingStar to see all the song selections just to confirm if Matkustaja by Egotrippi was in fact there or not. It is. And by God could Johannes sing it well."

And then there's Käärijä. As I already said, People's champion is likely. However, withJohannes wild streack, I'd love to hear any song off fantastista. Kiertävä sirkus would certainly fit for how things are going for Hotband. Aikuinen or Micmac could also make for interesting covers, especially if Johannes gets to rewriting lyrics.

Now, for most of these artista I'm not familiar enough with their styles and artistic visions to actually say what they might want to go for, which songs they like, or what'd be a challenge for them, making picking songs for them to cover simply guesswork.

I do want to hear Luotan Tulevaan covered. It is such a simple song, but I also know a lot of artists already love it (Sexmane coming to mind, as well as Käärijä himself). It is a song that resonates with people, but moving it away from the piano tune and into new territory could really make it something special.

I'll be a bit dissappointed if at least Tulipalo or Ylivoimainen isn't picked. They're the big songs, but they're also so very Kuumaa. What would they sound like from any other performer?

And since we have musicians with a lot more experiemntal, alternative sounds to them, really any hotband song could get completely turnedon its head. I'm really interested to hear any and all covers Vesta and käärijä do whatever they pick.

So yeah. This season is stacked.

just gonna say that i love your essays 💜

just the way you do these keen observations of hotband and manage to put all that in writing, i've seen it too in other fandoms and i love it because, like, even I have lots of thoughts about hotband and other things but I haven’t had to write essays in a while so it all comes across as a mess to me, and to see others like you just put them out there thoughtfully. yeah

i thought of this after your last two essays on johannes' interview behavior, but i especially love the one you did about aarni (i think last month? or not?? well def this year) and how we get such good pics of his bandmates from here since he's not just some photographer, he's their friend too. i think about it a lot. and not just in the hotband context

I think it is sometimes valuable to not just observe, but to put into words what we observe and why it has the effect it does. While often the written out comments boil down to general fangirling, it is good to remember that there is meaning to it. This band is connecting with people on a very real, deep level, and that is not by accident. It is due to multiple factors, many of them intentional or thought out. There is a reason this band has made it where others have failed.

To be honest, this is how I view almost everything. It’s why I love my job, it’s why I love writing, and how I connect with people.

Ooh, good question!I have not ran into any that I can remember off the top of my head right now, but that's not surprising.

While Ahti has been in the scene for years, he hasn't been mainstream for that long. Very few mainstream rappers would be making references to someone kind of only known in the scene, and I don't listen to enough non mainstream rappers to really know songs from that side of things.

Not to mention since Ahti got his start in freestyle battle and usually the transition from there to commercial music can be a bit painful, there wouldn't be many artists that would be in commercial music that would have known him from back then personally enough to want to make those references on that alone.

If I wanted to find those references though, looking into artists that the Mannila's produce and write for would be my place to start. I wouldn't be surprised if AKL had some references there for example. I do know that there have been a lot of references made to Taulut, which is kind of referencing Ahti by extention. I also have vague memories about references being made to Yksinkertasta somewhere.

I'm more than certain there are some references somewhere, because it's rap music after all, but since references could be made tomelodies to vague events to lyrics to whatever, it's difficult to just find them.

extremely strange ask but what is being referred to in the line "with all due respect must tuntuu et blockfest otti ällää pahasti". i was thinking about what the L could possibly be yesterday and i then proceeded to have a dream where someone explained it to me and now i feel compelled to ask

The answer in all its simple beauty is that he was not in the Blockfest lineup. They took the L and passed up on having him perform on the year he was majorly breaking through.

If you go look up current and past Blockfest lineups, it should come as no surprise it's a rap and hiphop festival. Ahti had one of the most sold albums and one of the most listened to songs that year. Pretty much anyone else in those top tens Blockfest could have in their lineup, they did. And yet.

But yeah, by my understanding it's nothing bigger or more dramatic than the fact that he wasn't attached to the lineup. If it were any other festival Ahti wasn't at that year, it would make no sense to write such a lyric, but Blockfest is a rap and hiphop festival and so it is actually kind of an L to take for them specifically. Referring to things in the rap scene is the bread and butter of rap verses.

Ooh, tough one because I’ve been looping him a lot this month.

Mitä sul oli mieles? is an obvious favourite of mine. No questions asked. One of my most played of all time. I love the first verse especially, on so many levels.

Kissa was the first song of his I’d heard and has been a steady favourite since. It is a damn good song. Kiltti and Just silleen also scratch a particular part of my brain. Very vibey. Love to sing along to those.

Now, currently I’ve been looping Emppu and 100%. Emppu is just so lovely, in that bittersweet way that carries the story of the song. Not to mention how very much I feel that chorus. Ouchies. 100% on the other hand is very classic Ahti, and my current blog title lmao. Also the only song I’ve ever heard with Danitello’s audio signature.

So, those are the current picks. But really, I’ve been listening to nearly his entire discography these past few weeks, so anything goes.

Half random, half thought out.

Nanoa was a childhood name thingy I kinda liked, trying to come up with a cool unique name. Twisted from Noona. 1 fits at the end of it in english well. No one is here. Nah. No one at all. Nanoa1.

Then the For You bit came from kinda the same thought pattern as Jambo’s Mun some tili name (though I had never heard a single song from him at the time I picked it). I wanted a mental separation between my identity and my online presence. I am not my account. This is just what I choose to let other people see. It’s what I give to you, little bits of me for you to enjoy, but not all of me, and not more than I choose.
