It’s difficult to capture the inner workings of the original pipe organ at Clementine as the reflection on the steel windows is unavoidable.  But at least you can see the arched windows in the reflection!  Inside, the murmur of birds is a nod to Little Bird Lounge.

Most people don’t observe the architectural details.  That may be why we have little great architecture.  Here, our exterior concrete walls are detailed with the residue of the forms used to pour the walls.  The floating steel railing, like all of our exterior steelwork, is painted a sky blue to disappear into the sky above the surrounding city park.

It took us 5 years after opening to find a vintage fireplace mantle that happened to be the same age Little Bird Lounge (1905). It also was originally from Nashville and perfectly fit the space. Our children led the installation. Here, success has been achieved.

In 1905, the church added onto the sanctuary and promptly covered the bricks with a white cement slurry.  When we removed the concrete, we decided to keep the brick scarring.

We think that when restoring old structures it’s important to leave clues as to what came before.  Attentive visitors wonder why the scar is there and come up with their own conclusions.

Restoration is like plastic surgery, you should always leave some of what was original.

Front signage of Ruby.  We could talk a lot about bad signage and visual pollution, but we’ll simply say that we think a sign should be minimal and if it has to be descriptive (in our industry it’s obligatory to have “Event Center” in the name), the name is a failure.

Ruby’s street-facing sign is simple.  It’s constructed of steel and back-lit with the light reflecting off the poured concrete walls that comprise the terracing and support wall for the Treehouse Courtyard.

It does not directly face cars passing by in either direction, but is discrete in its facing directly outward.   It’s at the level of passing pedestrians, not elevated.

Architectural lighting is critical for an event.  The entire building should be treated as a stage.
