Im fernen Märchenland Indien schwören sich in einem heiligen Hain voller Derwische der tapfere, aber inkonsequente Krieger Solor und die Bayadère (französisch für Tempeltänzerin) Nikiya ewige Liebe. Der Oberbrahmane ist auch scharf auf sie. Der Radjah will Solor aber lieber mit seiner Tochter vermählen, was für diesen auch in Ordnung ist. Dass die arme Bayadère dann aber auch noch auf der Verlobungsparty tanzen muss, ist dann aber schon ein bisschen gemein, aber nichts dagegen, daß die offensichtlich nicht so selbstbewußte Verlobte sie sicherheitshalber auch noch hinterhätig umbringen läßt, gleich am Ende des ersten Akts.

Sie spukt dann aber als Geist herum, Solor ergibt sich dem Opiumrausch (oben), der aus einigen aufwändigen Choreographien für das Corps de Ballet besteht. Bei der Vermählung schließlich hat die zuständige Gottheit aber dann doch genug, versenkt alles in Schutt und Asche und die Liebenden sind in himmlichen Gefilelden oder Nirvana oder was in diesem Falle die zuständige Einrichtung ist wieder vereint. Obwohl man nicht ganz dahinter kommt, was sie eigentlich aneinander finden. Im wesentlichen scheinen sie eigentlich nur darauf zu achten, daß sie beim Tanzen gut aussehen.

I'm not sure what I'm missing about Koshkaryova recently but I have found her dancing underwhelming thus far? I thought she was fantastic at the Moscow IBC (Shirin variation!!!) but since then she has looked very messy. Her Corsaire, DQ bridesmaid variation and Paquita varation- all seemed noticeably off the music, frenetic, turned in and slightly sloppy turns with stiff arms. Also something about her epaulement seems off. I hope this is not related to preparing too many new roles too quickly. Additionally, I don't understand the double standards Valiullina is facing about her body type. Some people complain that she is too heavy for ballet yet fail to find fault with to other brilliant, less than stick-thin ballerinas like Maria Alexandrova and Angelina Vorontsova. I find Valiullina lovely with very effortless technique, an good jump and commanding stage presence, so naturally think the comments about her weight are quite unnecessary.

Probably because being good in competitions doesn't translate to being good in a major stage. I think there's two ways to think about this.

First, she's a fresh graduate. It's normal for her to be nervous. They're not just debuts, they're debuts on her first few months with the company. I think every legend in ballet has had their fair share of failures on stage. She'll probably have more solid footing after her first year. Second, the expectations for her are high because she's the top graduate and she's already a soloist. The bar is a lot higher for her than Yaroslavna and Sofia. Anything she will do, whether it be average or above, will likely be overlooked since we're expecting more from her.

That said, there's a lot to work on and I think she will and probably is working on them. Aside from her Paquita debut (Trilby Variation), I think she's been fine. Also, I don't know what she danced in Corsaire? Or if Bolshoi has performed Corsaire this season.

For Sofya, ugh I love her. You can tell that she's a thoughtful dancer. She's not a risk taker like Maria. Her technique is flawless and she's captivating on stage. She is my bias hahaha. To be honest with you, I don't look at instagram comments nor overtly negative telegram channels/forums so I'm not aware of the comments about her body. If there's an overwhelming amount of people judging her for that, that is disappointing. Does she have a more mature body, yes. Does it affect her dancing in any way whatsoever, no. She literally has the same body type as Maria Bulanova! I don't see why they can't accept her as well. She has so much potential, I hope they never hold her back just because she doesn't have the body of her 13 year old self?

Short (under 5’6): Skylar Brandt, Misty Copeland, Evgenia Obratsova, Nina Kaptsova, Alina Cojocaru, Natalia Makarova, Ektaterina Krysanova, Tiler Peck, Maria Kochetkova, Iana Salenko, Osipova

Average (not too small or tall): Maria Alexandrova, Nela, Olesya Novikova, Diana Vishneva, Polina Semionova, Viktoria Tereshkina, Maria Khoreva

Tall (over 5’7): Zakharova, Ekaterina Shipulina, Lopatkina, Olga Smirnova, Alina Somova, Isabella Boylston

5'6" (167cm) is the average height, particularly in Europe. It's also quite common here for companies to post a minimum requirement of 165cm for women- certainly not always followed though. I think the bar for being a 'short' dancer needs to be dancers under that minimum.

DÍA DEL BAILARÍN: POR QUÉ SE CELEBRA EN 28 DE FEBRERO

Cada 28 de febrero se celebra en nuestro país el Día del Bailarín, en honor al nacimiento del argentino Jorge Raul Itovich Donn, considerado en todo el mundo como uno de los más grandes exponentes de la danza clásica del siglo XX.

Bailarín y director artístico nacido en El Palomar, Buenos Aires en 1947, Jorge Donn comenzó su formación a los ocho años en el Instituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colón, siendo alumno de la emblemática coreógrafa y terapeuta de la danza, María Fux.

A los 15 años conoció a Maurice Béjart, una de las figuras de la danza más importante del mundo, quien estaba de gira en el país con el Ballet del Siglo XX. Quedó tan fascinado con el coreógrafo que, al poco tiempo, decidió mudarse a Bruselas. Allí se consagró como intérprete en la compañía de Béjart, que lo tomó como fuente de inspiración para muchas de sus piezas. Fue partenaire de bailarinas rusas de la talla de Maya Plisetskaya y Natalia Makarova y, a partir de allí, adquirió fama internacional.

En 1976 fue nombrado el director artístico del Ballet del Siglo XX y pocos años más tarde, en 1979, fue galardonado con el Dance Magazine Award, el premio más importante de la danza. En 1988 dejó la dirección artística del Ballet del Siglo XX para fundar su propia compañía, L´Europa Ballet.

Aunque era considerado una estrella en todo el mundo, la sociedad argentina de aquella época lo miraba con cierto prejuicio. Su aspecto pelilargo, su manera de hablar, su forma de vestir y sus demostraciones de afecto, resultaban chocantes para el público local.

Ya habiendo triunfado como bailarín en Europa, adquirió su popularidad definitiva en 1982 con el estreno de la película Los unos y los otros, de Lelouche, en la que interpretaba a Boris Itovich (uno de sus apellidos reales), personaje que lo consagraría para siempre por su interpretación del inolvidable Bolero de Ravel. Otros hitos memorables de su trayectoria fueron Bhakti Nijinsky y Payaso de Dios. A los 39 años se lo pudo ver bailando por última vez, en Madrid, donde interpretó el Bolero y Diva.

En 1989 fue premiado por la Fundación Konex, siendo reconocido como uno de los cinco mejores bailarines de la historia en la Argentina. Además, fue uno de los pocos bailarines latinoamericanos elogiado y reconocido por la élite europea del ballet del siglo XX.

Jorge Donn murió el 30 de noviembre de 1992 en Lausana, Suiza, a los 45 años. Luego de su muerte lo homenajearon muchos artistas y bailarines, entre ellos, Maurice Béjart con su "Ballet por la vida".

En Ciudad Jardín, barrio donde nació el bailarín nació, se nombró un pasaje con su nombre.
